This exhibit includes artwork from several cultural traditions of the Pacific Islands, including Melanesia and Polynesia. Works in collection include jewelry, ornaments, and tapa cloths.
Of notable interest is a finely carved lizard of dark wood and shell from Easter Island a battle pectoral created from hundreds of Nassa shells, which highlights Middi art of New Britain and an 18th-century royal Hawaiian necklace.
Other highlights of the collection include a breast ornament embellished with small birds and stars that figured as insignia of prestige for the Tonga of the Fiji Islands. Featuring whale ivory and pearl shell design, it is recognized as one of the largest of its kind.

Two of Baltimores largest museums the Baltimore Museum of Art and Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture have announced plans to close temporarily during the holidays in response to the recent surge in COVID-19 infections.
The BMA will be closed beginning Wednesday through Sunday, Dec. 26, according to a museum news release, and will reopen as scheduled on Wednesday, Dec. 29. The BMA normally is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
However, the museums gift shop and Gertrudes Chesapeake Kitchen will remain open Dec. 22-23, and Dec. 26.
The Lewis Museum will close Wednesday through Jan. 4, reopening Thursday, Jan. 5. A previously scheduled event, Holiday Home Cookin at the Lewis, event will be held as scheduled tonight, though a spokeswoman said that COVID-19 protocols and social distancing will be strictly enforced.
The BMAs closure will affect visitors who have purchased tickets this week to view the exhibit, A Modern Influence: Henri Matisse, Etta Cone and Baltimore. Those visitors will automatically be issued a refund, the release said. However, tickets remain available for the exhibits final week, which ends Jan. 2.
In addition, the portrait of former Democratic U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummingspainted by the Baltimore artist Jerrell Gibbs will be on view from Dec. 29 through Jan. 9. The portrait originally was scheduled to go on public view on Wednesday.

The Baltimore Museum of Industry focuses on exhibits that explore various types of manufacturing and industry from the early 20th century. The museum also documents inventions and processes discovered in Baltimore and Maryland.
The museums exhibits include recreations of parts of a cannery, a 1900s garment loft, a machine shop from 1900, a print shop, a Pharmacy, as well as exhibits on the food industry in Baltimore.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City reduced its visitor capacity to 10,000 a day, slashing in half its average daily attendance during the holiday season, and suspended dining in its cafeteria as part of new safety measures responding to the statewide surge of COVID-19 cases. The self-imposed restrictions went into effect today, December 21, and will remain in place until further notice, the museum told Hyperallergic.
Reducing density is one important step to protect our staff and visitors, said Kenneth Weine, the Met Museums chief communications officer, in an interview with Hyperallergic. He added that the decision was taken due to high attendance numbers in recent days and in preparation for a busy holiday season for the museum.
Annually, we have very big crowds over these two weeks, Weine explained, referring to the upcoming holiday period. In recognition of that and the recent strong admission numbers weve had, were taking this step to ensure that the entrance experience is safe for visitors and staff.
COVID-19 infections in the state of New York have spiked over 80% during the past two weeks, driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant. The total of the reported cases for the past week was the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

They paid Iguana Studios, New York, one million dollars todevelop a website for Brushstrokes. However they had one significantproblem – they didn’t own the Brushstrokes.com domain.
The first that we knew about any of this was inNovember 1999 when we received an e-mail from William Goldsteinrepresenting a “Canadian art company” interested in buying the rightsto the domain.
Unfortunately they embarked on a lot of deception in the early stagesof negotiation, which of course eroded away any trust. After negotiatingwith them over a four month period we were not able to agree on arealistic price for the Brushstrokes.com domain. They were prepared togo no higher than $150,000 and we were holding out for somewhere between$200-250,000. Had the deal gone ahead Atelier America Inc. could haverecovered this in a matter of weeks once the new business was launched.
In order to move forward with their “Plan B”, Atelier America thenregistered nearly 30 domain names, many in the form ofBrushstrokesSomething.com. The two that most people will be familiarwith were BrushstrokesArt.com and BrushstrokesDirect.com.
In November 2000 Atelier America Inc. went live with theirmillion-dollar website under BrushstrokesArt.com. This was laterswitched to BrushstrokesDirect.com.

Baltimore Loves Matisse Thats One More Reason To Love Baltimore
In 1949, while Henri Matisse was still in the South of France cutting shapes out of colored paper, Etta Cone from Baltimore gave 600 of his works to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Over the years, those 600 were complemented by 600 more, many acquired by the Baltimore museum from Matisses family.
All that adds up to a lot of Matisse.
The BMAs holdings are not, of course, the only reason that great works by Matisse are easier to find in America than in the artists native France. Albert Barnes from Philadelphia, Sarah and Michael Stein from San Francisco, and Alfred Barr from New York all played significant roles in that happy state of affairs. But the sheer number of works at the BMA and their quality means that for any Matisse lover, a pilgrimage to that city has always been obligatory.
That is more the case in 2021 than ever. On Dec. 12, the museum will open a Matisse research center the Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies. Hosting conferences and driving publications, the center will include a dedicated exhibition space, a library and a study room. Ahead of that launch, the BMA has mounted a marvelous Matisse exhibition that offers a fresh perspective on its own rich holdings. The show, organized by Leslie Cozzi and Katy Rothkopf, is called A Modern Influence: Henri Matisse, Etta Cone, and Baltimore and runs through Jan. 2.

This collection contains works from 59 distinct artistic traditions from Aztec and Maya of Mesoamerica, Chimú and Muisca of AndeanSouth America, and Nicoya and Atlantic Watershed of Costa Rica. The collection includes works from 2500 BC to AD 1521. The core collection of 120 objects was given to the museum by Alan Wurtzburger in 1958, which significantly expanded the scope of the existing collection and provided momentum for a traveling exhibition of Peruvian ceramics titled Myths of Ancient Peru .
The collection is particularly admired for its West Mexico ceramics, including an important Nayarit house model and an enthroned chief. Also on display is a unique assemblage of 23 figures in dance regalia which celebrates ancient performance and highlights the diversity of Colima art.
Other notable pieces include a finely worked serpentine figure of Olmec mastery, elegant portrayals of Maya and Aztec noblewomen showcasing the integral roles women played in the social, political, economic, and spiritual realms of society, and miniature gold votives in the Muisca tradition.

The exhibition is part of an effort to draw in more diverse perspectives and is appropriately named Guarding the Art.

Bma To Exhibit Works From John Waters’ Personal Collection Starting In November
BALTIMORE — In fall 2020, the Baltimore Museum of Art announced beloved local cult filmmaker, writer and artist John Waters was gifting the museum approximately 375 works of fine art from his personal collection.
“The first art I ever bought was a two-dollar Miró poster at The Baltimore Museum of Art gift shop back in the ’50s when I was a child. After taking it home and hanging it on my bedroom wall at my parents’ house, I realized from the hostile reaction of my neighborhood playmates that art could provoke, shock, and cause trouble,” the auteur said at the time. “I became a collector for life. It’s only fitting that the fruits of my 60-year search for new art that could startle, antagonize, and infuriate even me, ends up where it all began-in my hometown museum.”
Starting in November, visitors to the BMA will get a look at some of the highlights through the exhibit “Coming Attractions: The John Waters Collection.”
About 90 works have been selected for “Coming Attractions” by photographer Catherine Opie and artist Jack Pierson, including pieces by Diane Arbus, Cindy Sherman, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol, among others.
“Our hope is to share with audiences another aspect of John’s creative vision by offering a glimpse into what he values: artists who are unafraid to take risks, who do not compromise, and who create their art on the margins,” said Opie and Pierson.
“Coming Attractions: The John Waters Collection” is on view from Nov. 20 to April 16, 2023.
