The Museum Of Modern Art Presents A Free Online Class On Fashion: Enroll In Fashion As Design Today

Fashion as Design, a free online course by the Museum of Modern Art , beginning this coming week , may not equip you with the skills to bring a fabulous garment to fruition, but it will help you understand the context behind clothes both workaday and wild.

Led by Department of Architecture and Design Senior Curator Paola Antonelli, Curatorial Assistant Michelle Millar Fisher, and Research Assistant Stephanie Kramerâwhose respective fashion heroes are actor Cate Blanchett, designer Claire McArdle, and activist Gloria Steinemâthe course will consider the history and impact of 70+ individual garments.

The pieces can be examined in person through the end of January as part of MoMAâs Items: Is Fashion Modern? exhibition.

Some of the duds on the syllabus benefited from a celebrity boost, such as Bruce Leeâs iconic red track suit, recreated with its proper early 70âs cut, below.

Others, just as iconic, can be bought without fanfare in a drugstore or supermarketâwitness the plain white t-shirt, introduced to MoMAâs collection when Antonelli was curating 2004âs Humble Masterpieces: Everyday Marvels of Design.

Students with no particular interest in fashion may be intrigued to consider the threads on their backs through such lenses as marketing, distribution, politics, identity, and economics.

Arriving In Three Colorways

In celebration of its reimagined, redesigned and reconsidered museum space, New Yorks Museum of Modern Art has tapped some of its favorite artists, brands and collaborators to create exclusive pieces for the famous museum. On October 21, the museum is unveiling a series of new galleries as well as spaces for performances, evens and more, which are set out to broaden our perspectives on the artists and stories of our time.

The real value of this expansion is not just more space, but space that allows us to rethink the experience o f art in the Museum, said Glenn D. Lowry, the David Rockerfeller Diretor of the MoMA, also adding that in addition to the new spaces, the Museum Store will also see a revamp, into a double height store with expanded book offerings, design objects, art reproduction as well as a handful of MoMA exclusives. The exclusives include a coveted collaboration with Champion, which features three limited-edition collegiate hoodies emblazoned with the museums branding across the chest, arriving in blue, grey and black iterations.

The new colorways come in sizes S through XL, and are now available exclusively at the MoMA. The hoodies retail at $80 USD each. Get a look at the pieces in the gallery above, and let us know which colorway is your favorite in the comments below.

Is Fashion Modern

  • MoMA, Floor 6

Items: Is Fashion Modern? explores the present, pastand sometimes the futureof 111 items of clothing and accessories that have had a strong impact on the world in the 20th and 21st centuriesand continue to hold currency today. Among them are pieces as well-known and transformative as the Levis 501s, the Breton shirt, and the Little Black Dress, and as ancient and culturally charged as the sari, the pearl necklace, the kippah, and the keffiyeh. Items will also invite some designers, engineers, and manufacturers to respond to some of these indispensable items with pioneering materials, approaches, and techniquesextending this conversation into the near and distant futures, and connecting the history of these garments with their present recombination and use. Driven first and foremost by objects, not designers, the exhibition considers the many relationships between fashion and functionality, culture, aesthetics, politics, labor, identity, economy, and technology.

The Items: Is Fashion Modern? exhibition catalogue, by Paola Antonelli and Michelle Millar Fisher, is available now. The catalogue index is also available as a PDF.

Organized by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, and Michelle Millar Fisher, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design.
