Science Museum Of Long Island
Although this is not your typical museum where you can just drop in and stroll around, there’s plenty to do at the Science Museum of Long Island. This not-for-profit science activity center features hands-on science workshops, all of which require pre-registration. These workshops are typically scheduled for children during school vacations and on weekdays.
The museum also offers field trips that teachers and community leaders can arrange to enrich their students’ regular lessons.

Long Island Aviation Museums
Early aviators such as Charles Lindbergh are celebrated at Museum Rows Cradle of Aviation Museum, which takes visitors through a journey of over 100 years of history. The Museum, Planetarium and Dome Theater is home to one of the largest air and spacecraft collections in the world.
At Grumman Aerospace on Long Island, a crew of 9,000 banded together to design, assemble and test the Apollo Lunar Modules that landed 12 men on the moon in 1969.
At the Cradle of Aviation and American Airpower Museum explore aviation modules and track Charles Lindberghs historic flight from Long Island to Paris in 1927.

The Hicksville Gregory Museum
From a fascinating rock collection including fossils and an exhibit on fluorescent stones to a 5 1/2-foot long replica of a Mosasaur skull, the Hicksville Gregory Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Earth Science.

For Educators:
The Long Island Explorium is a New York State certified provider of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education credits. Our programs help inspire teachers to incorporate STEAM and constructivist approaches into their standards-based lessons. Teachers learn how to foster engagement of all learners through hands-on challenges that explore the engineering design process, encourage teamwork, and incorporate career and civic awareness.

Best Science Museums For Kids On Long Island

Center for Science Teaching and Learning Rockville CentreLocated in Tanglewood Preserve, this instructional center offers a number of science clinics each month for children ages 5-12. Its “Sunday Science” program includes hands-on projecs in topics such as chemistry, camouflage, dinosaurs, and even dissections. Warning: Some activities can get messy and some take place outside so dress appropriately.

Cradle Of Aviation Museum
This excellent museum chronicles the history of flight from dreams of soaring to hot air balloons to Long Island’s first flight in 1909. Visitors will see actual planes including a sister airplane of Charles Lindbergh’s “Spirit of St. Louis,” a Republic P-84B Thunderjet built in Farmingdale, a Grumman Lunar Module LM-13, built in Bethpage in 1972, and much more that relates to planes and other machines that go up in the sky.
Long Island Science Center
At the Long Island Science Center, learning exhibits and fun, interactive, educational programs make science come alive for children and families. There are also scout programs, teacher training, science birthday parties and much more available.
In addition, school programs and outreach feature hands-on activities that are age-appropriate for children from pre-K through high school.
