Impact And Retrospective Commentary

In later years, the building became widely praised. Marcus Whiffen and Frederick Koeper wrote: “The dynamic interior of the Guggenheim is, for some, too competitive for the display of art, but no one disputes that it is one of the memorable spaces in all of architecture.” Paul Goldberger said in 2009: “I think the legacy of this building is in the message that architecture does not have to lie down and play dead in front of art.” According to Herbert Muschamp, the Guggenheim was “one of New York’s most distinguished landmarks”, as well as Wright’s best-known design. The American Institute of Architects gave a Twenty-five Year Award to the Guggenheim in 1986, describing the museum’s building as “an architectural landmark and a monument to Wright’s unique vision”.

The museum building inspired other architects’ designs. Several similar buildings were developed in the 1960s, although those designs generally used less concrete than the Guggenheim did. Deborah Solomon of The New York Times Magazine wrote in 2002 that the Guggenheim inspired the phenomenon of “the museum that is just walls”, wherein museums competed for the best-designed buildings. The building was also depicted in a two-cent postage stamp issued in Wright’s honor in 1966.

Architect Of Guggenheim Museum

Ace architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built the Guggenheim Museum.

Ever since its inauguration on October 21, 1959, the architectural marvel has inspired countless visitors with its beauty.

No wonder it is considered Frank Lloyd Wrights masterpiece.

Unlike traditional Museums, this building spirals upward and outward in smoothly sculptured white concrete.

You will notice the construction widen as it rises.

Check out the video below to understand this better

When it came to the visitors experience, architect Wright decided to do away with the traditional Museum approach.

As soon as the visitors enter the Museum, they are taken to the top of the building via an elevator.

They then explore the Museum and keep walking downward on the gentle slope of a continuous ramp.

What To Do At The Guggenheim

The museums ascending ramp is occupied by rotating exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Though Wright intended visitors to go to the top and wind their way down, the striking single semi-circular elevator can make this difficult on busy days. Exhibitions, therefore, are installed from bottom to top.

Pick up the free audioguide or download the Guggenheim app for information about the exhibits and architecture. You an discover works in the Thannhauser Collection with the child-friendly audio descriptions, available on the Guggenheims Digital Guide. You can also enhance your experience of the building with a Family Activity Guide on architecture.

There are two good on-site food options: the Wright, at ground level, a space-age restaurant serving steamy risotto and classic cocktails, and Café 3 on the 3rd floor, which offers views of Central Park, coffee and light snacks. Both venues are components of the original building design and worth a look in their own right for their splendid aesthetics.

Guggenheim Pay What You Wish

Peter Fischli and David Weiss, The Way Things Go, 1987, Excerpt.

How busy does the Guggenheim get during the Pay What You Wish window on Saturday evenings? Is everyone rushing to go then because they can get in for cheaper?

Thank you.

Whenever there are cheaper prices, you can expect long lines.

Thank you. That’s why I asked how busy it gets.

I remember going to MOMA& getting out at 3 to pick up some theater tickets at TKTS & wondering what that huge line was. When I looked around I saw the signs for free admission to MOMA on Friday starting at 5. The line was already down the street & around the block.

Thank you.

I just checked out the MOMA’s website to see whether it is a regular Friday thing and it is – from 4pm now though – and they advise people arrive after 6pm which makes me wonder whether a late arrival at the Guggenheim would be the right plan.

I only want to see the architecture – I couldn’t care less about the art – so I only need to be there for 15 minutes.

I wouldn’t want to pay $25 FOR AN/ANY ART GALLERY but I definitely am not paying it for 15 minutes!

Edited: 6 years ago

I believe you can walk into the lobby/atrium area for a look around anytime, but you couldn’t go upstairs without a ticket.

Edited: 6 years ago

Now there’s an interesting idea. Thank you, Kaye. Is there much more to the worthwhile architecture beyond the main, erm, round bit?

I’m not sure the view from the top is worth $25 if you don’t want to browse any of the art.

It is a lovely building, but the side galleries are not as distinctive as the atrium IMO.
