The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse, organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, investigates the aesthetic impulses of early 20th-century Black culture that have proved ubiquitous to the southern region of the United States. The exhibition chronicles the pervasive sonic and visual parallels that have served to shape the contemporary landscape, and looks deeply into the frameworks of landscape, religion, and the Black bodydeep meditative repositories of thought and expression. Within the visual expression, assemblage, collage, appropriation, and sonic transference are explored as deeply connected to music tradition. The visual expression of the African American South along with the Black sonic culture are overlooked tributaries to the development of art in the United States and serve as interlocutors of American modernism. This exhibition looks to the contributions of artists, academically trained as well as those who were relegated to the margins as outsiders, to uncover the foundational aesthetics that gave rise to the shaping of our contemporary expression.

Every summer, Virginia MOCA hosts camps for children and teens ages 217. Art campers exercise their imaginations through classes designed to challenge and inspire. At the end of each camp week, students are asked to select an artwork to include in the Prisms: Art Camp Exhibition that demonstrates their creative achievements. On view in the Fleming Gallery, this exhibition is a celebration of a fun-filled, imaginative, and educational summer in the studios.

Advisory Board And Administration

In the fall of 2017, advisory board members announced were Steven A. Markel, Co-Chair William A. Royall Jr., Co-Chair Melody C. Barnes, Vice Chair and Marcia H. Thalhimer, Secretary. In January 2018, Virginia Commonwealth University announced the resignation of the ICA’s inaugural director, Lisa Freiman , citing her intention to resume her scholarly research on the artist Claes Oldenberg and to remain in her position as a tenured faculty member of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. Following the retirement of Freiman, VCU announced that Joseph H. Seipel, former Dean of the VCU School of the Arts, was named interim director of the ICA. On September 6, 2018, a new executive director, Dominic Willsdon, was named for the ICA. Willsdon comes to the ICA from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He served at SFMOMA as curator of education and public practice since 2006. He served for five years as a curator of programming at the Tate Modern in London. At the ICA he succeeded Lisa Freiman, who stepped down at the beginning of the year, and will begin his new post on December 1, 2018. In 2019 the Institute of Contemporary Art announced that it would lay off 20 percent of its full-time staff.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

A bold new forum for the arts creates a striking campus gateway for Virginia Commonwealth University. Located at one of Richmondâs busiest downtown intersections, the building welcomes the community on two fronts: one city-facing and one campus-facing. Both entries open into a light-filled lobby that becomes a glowing beacon at night.

The Institute does not maintain a collection of its own, focusing instead on temporary exhibitions of cutting-edge works. We designed flexible galleries that provide a backdrop for a wide variety of media, from ceiling-suspended works to audio installations. A 240-seat auditorium accommodates lectures and performances.

Mille Colori By Dale Chihuly


Translating to 1,000 Colors, Mille Colori certainly lives up to its name. This breathtaking 14-foot glass sculpture by renowned artist, Dale Chihuly, is made up of 520 separate blown-glass pieces and hangs as a permanent fixture in our sunlit Rodriguez Pavilion, which was built specifically to showcase the modern masterwork. As our only permanent work of art on view, Mille Colori can be experienced year-round and has been seen by thousands of visitors throughout the years.

Inaugural Year Exhibitions And Events

, scheduled for October 28, 2017 â February 25, 2018, was announced as the inaugural exhibition for the first season of the new ICA/Markel Center. Featured in are artists and performers Nidaa Badwan, MartÃn Bonadeo, Peter Burr and Porpentine Charity Heartscape, Tania Bruguera, Chim Pom, Andrea Donnelly, Edie Fake, Hope Ginsburg, GWAR, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Kate Just, Titus Kaphar, Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr., Autumn Knight, Lily Lamberta and All The Saints Theater Company, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Noor Nuyten, Geof Oppenheimer, Cheryl Pope, Paul Rucker, Curtis Talwst Santiago, , Jon-Phillip Sheridan, Deb Sokolow, Tavares Strachan, Betty Tompkins, Stephen Vitiello, and Levester Williams.

In 2016, while the ICA/Markel Center was still under construction, the James Branch Cabell Library at VCU presented ICA: A Forum of Ideas, a collaborative forum and exhibition for students about the interior and architectural design of the building, especially the first floor forum area and its staircase. This was a project of the ICA staff, the Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts faculty, and BCWH Architects. A description of the video showing the group’s hard hat tour of the forum area describes it as “a space defined by a lofty ceiling, curved wall, glass facade, and a sweeping grand staircase.” The exterior form of the building uses sculptural blocks made of zinc and translucent glass.

Modern & Contemporary collection of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts includes European art after 1900, American art after 1950, and a global collection of 21st-century art.

German ExpressionismMost of VMFAs German Expressionist art was originally purchased from 1905 to 1925 by Ludwig and Rosy Fischer, forward-thinking collectors from Frankfurt, Germany. The collection later passed to their sons, Max and Ernst. In 1934, Ernst and his wife, Anne, left Germany and eventually settled in Richmond. In 2009, VMFA acquired Ernsts half of the collection, about 200 works, through a gift-purchase agreement. Two additional works represent Max Fischers half of the collection.

The Sydney And Francis Lewis CollectionSydney and Frances Lewis donated over eighty percent of the art from the 1950s to 1980s currently on view at VMFA. Their collecting began modestly in the early sixties, but by the end of the sixties, they reached the top tier of those collecting American contemporary art. In 1985, the Lewises gave the best of their private collection to VMFA. VMFAs Sydney and Frances Lewis Galleries now represent one of the top postwar collections in a comprehensive museum in the United States.

RICHMOND, Va. Some of the countrys most candidly truth-telling museums dedicated to the civil rights movement, and by extension to Black history, are in cities south of the Mason-Dixon line: Jackson, Memphis and Montgomery among them. Which suggests that old, sweeping views of the South as a bastion of stuck-in-past political denial are, and have always been, wrong.

Yet large-scale museum surveys of art from and about the South are scarce. Its as if the mainstream art world specifically navel-gazing, Europhilic New York didnt know, or believe, or care that whole, rich art cultures were unfolding in Atlanta, and Houston, and New Orleans.

One of the few recent broad-spectrum shows to tackle the subject was Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art, organized by Miranda Lash and Trevor Schoonmaker at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham, N.C. But that was in 2016. Now comes another one, a big, juicy, thought-through thematic sampler here at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU in Richmond , also known as the VCU Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, is an arts center at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia. It was designed by architecture firm Steven Holl Architects, and built by Gilbane Building Company. Steven Holl Architects was selected from 64 competing architectural firms worldwide, along with local architect, BCWH Architects. Virginia Commonwealth University President Michael Rao, in announcing plans for the ICA in 2011, said that the prominence of the museum’s location, “bordering the city’s Arts District and in the Broad Street Corridor which links the VCU Monroe Park Campus with VCU’s Medical Center” would have symbolic significance. The ICA opened to the public in April, 2018.
