Each year the Hand Bookbinders of California sponsors an Annual Members Exhibition open for viewing to the general public. The artworks displayed reflect the various interests of HBCs diverse membership, and can include design bindings, fine press, artists books, calligraphy, conservation, box-making, historical structures, and paper decoration.
Levi Strauss: A History Of American Style At The Contemporary Jewish Museum
Learn about the history of Levi Strauss & Co., its fundamental connection to San Francisco, and the birth of the blue jean. This exhibition features over 250 rarely before seen items from the Levi Strauss & Co. David Huffman: Terra Incognita At The Museum Of The African Diaspora

Awaken: A Tibetan Buddhist Journey Toward Enlightenment At Asian Art Museum

There are a lot of retrospectives on this list, and many of them fall into the rediscovered older woman trope. But I critique that genre out of love, so I will continue to be excited when these shows are announced. Alison Knowles has her roots in Fluxus, the avant-garde art group that produced happenings, conceptual event scores ” rel=”nofollow”> Grapefruit) and all manner of experiments that pushed the boundaries of art in the 60s and 70s. This presentation spans Knowles entire career, showcasing her long focus on ordinary objects and the stuff of everyday life. Even a small sampling of her work is fittingly eclectic: silk-screened paintings, major intermedia projects, cyanotypes, radio works, flax and bean sculptures, and artists books.

Seca Art Award Exhibition

Since 1967, SECA has honored recipients of the SECA Art Award with an exhibition at SFMOMA and an accompanying publication. The award distinguishes Bay Area artists whose work has not, at the time of nomination, been accorded substantial recognition from a major institution. Recipients are chosen by SFMOMA curators after a series of studio visits attended by SECA members. The 2022 SECA Art Award exhibition will highlight new work from this years award winners: Binta Ayofemi, Maria Guzmán Capron, Cathy Lu, Marcel Pardo Ariza and Gregory Rick.
Binta Ayofemis primary medium is the cities of Oakland and San Francisco, with works that focus on Black and Indigenous presence, land and spatial practices and modes of Black abstraction. Through a juxtaposition of bright fabrics, bold prints and a variety of textures, Maria Guzmán Capron creates commanding icons in positions of tenderness, power, vulnerability and movement with a dynamic patchwork of hand-sewn textiles and applied paint.
In installations that push the limits of ceramics, Cathy Lu manipulates Chinese art imagery and cultural references to deconstruct assumptions about Asian American identity and claims of authenticity. Marcel Pardo Ariza explores the relationship between kinship and queerness through constructed photographs, color sets and site-specific installations. Gregory Rick creates vibrant, large-scale paintings that depict scenes of conflict and struggle in high-contrast, cartoon-like imagery.

A Living For Us All: Artists And The Wpa
During the Great Depression, the federal government established the Works Progress Administration as a way to get artists and other workers employed again. The program also provided opportunities for artists to engage with and document the communities around them.
This new exhibition is primarily culled from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Arts own collection of Works Progress Administration art including paintings, photography, printmaking and textiles. Some works naturally focus on themes of labor during a period of economic strife others are less literal and turn to abstraction to show the realities of the 1930s.
Several of the works created within the program became controversial for their unflinching depictions of American culture, making them even more significant documents of the times.

Oakland Festival Of Immersive Arts
The two-weekend event turns the East Bay citys Broadway corridor into an interactive public art walk with mediums including augmented reality, holographic effects, kinetic sculptural installations, animated videos and more.
Presented by the Immersive Arts Alliance, the festival features 20 artists and collaborators with four premiere projects. Among the highlights is Oakland artist Damien McDuffies AR Museum for the People, a mobile augmented reality walking tour highlighting the narrative history of the Black Panther Party through murals inside the Oakstops storefront and at Black Panther monuments around the area.

The Art Of Disability Culture
This exhibition, originally presented at the Palo Alto Arts Center in 2021, explores the experiences of people with disabilities and highlights the Bay Areas unique place in the disability rights movement. Part of the shows intent is to create an intergenerational dialogue between artists with disabilities who remember the struggles before the 1990 passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and those born after it.
Featured artists include painter Bill Bruckner, dancer-choreographer Antoine Hunter, digital artist Michaela Oteri, photographer Anthony Tusler and emerging artist Rachel Ungerer.

Gillian Laub: Family Matters
For the last two decades, American photographer Gillian Laub has used the camera to investigate how societys most complex questions are often writ large in our most intimate relationships. Throughout her career she has been simultaneously, and privately, documenting the emotional, psychological, and political landscape of her own familyexploring her growing discomfort with the many extravagances that marked their lives. Intense intergenerational bonds have shaped and nurtured Laub, but have also been fraught. Balancing empathy with critical perspective, humor with horror, the closeness of family with the distance of the artist, Laub offers a picture of an American family saga that feels both anguished and hopeful.
The Contemporary Jewish Museum
SoMaHopefully, you didnt miss the amazing Jim Henson exhibit that just closed, but even if you did, youre not too late to see Oz is for Oznowicz: A Puppet Family’s History, a look at the puppeteer work of the parents of Frank Oz, the legendary actor and director who was a close collaborator with Henson and performed beloved Muppet characters, like Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear, and Cookie Monster. This exhibit features never-before-seen marionettes created by Mike and Frances Oznowicz, including a caricature of Hitler that served as a form of mockery and social commentary when the dictator was rising to power in the late 1930s . Also showing is Tikkun: For the Cosmos, the Community, and Ourselves, works from Bay Area artists that reflect on the Jewish concept of tikkun, which translates to repair in Hebrew . If you want to make the most of your visit, go in mid-October after photographer Gillian Laubs Family Matters exhibit opens so you can her photographs that capture the loyalty and love of her family, the fractures that occur due to politics, bar mitzvahs, weddings, poolside barbecues, and more . Benoit Éditeur presents thirteen illustrated books Pablo Picasso produced with the atelier of Pierre André Benoit of Alès, France, between 1957 and 1967. Both artists were prolific, valuing how a spontaneous approach to art making can capture emotion with immediacy and clarity of vision. Many of the rarely seen titles incorporate unconventional formats and materials, including miniatures, a binding with frog skins, and a device for creating interactive poetry conceived by poet Tristan Tzara. The exhibition also includes two PAB books illustrated by artist Jesse Reichek , who taught design at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1953 to 1986.

With a team of artists, Bay Area choreographer, poet and teacher Sara Shelton Mann holds court on the Fort Mason campus from June 621, unfolding an open process of experimental performance-making over the course of the month. While viewers can stop by to experience open rehearsals and workshops, the residency culminates on June 21 with a one-night-only performance of solos, duets and large ensemble pieces created onsite. Incorporating chalk grids, video, sound and art installations, 7 Excavations will be performed with the dreamiest of collaborators: the setting sun, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the watery expanse of San Francisco Bay.

The Obama Portraits Tour
This ones a no-brainer. If youre not lugging yourself to our nations capital on the regular, chances are this two-month stop at the de Young is your best chance to see Kehinde Wileys portrait of President Barack Obama and Amy Sheralds painting of Michelle Obama in person. And while visiting these works outside of the context of the Smithsonians National Portrait Gallery will remove some of the emotional and visual impact of seeing the first Black subjects in the ongoing Americas Presidents display, I have a feeling these monumental works carry their own aura along with them.

In a groundbreaking partnership with City College of San Francisco, SFMOMA hosts Diego Riveras monumental mural The Marriage of the Artistic Expression of the North and of the South on the Continent, more commonly known as Pan American Unity, in the museums Roberts Family Gallery free space. The mural, originally painted in front of a live audience at the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition on San Franciscos Treasure Island, is comprised of 10 fresco panels and measures 22 feet high and 74 feet wide .
It was Riveras last project outside of Mexico and is not only a treasured part of San Francisco history, but also one of the most important works of public art in the United States. Pan American Unity is installed in SFMOMAs free-to-visit Roberts Family Gallery on the ground floor in conjunction with Diego Riveras America.
