California Museum Of Science And Industry
In 1951, the exhibition became the “California Museum of Science and Industry”. The State Exhibition building was renamed in honor of major donor and trustee Howard F. Ahmanson as the Howard F. Ahmanson Building. The hands-on interactive exhibits included themes on agriculture, transportation, electricity, energy, industries, and minerals.
In 1961, the museum opened a new science wing that featured “Mathematica: A World of Numbers… and Beyond“, an exhibit sponsored by IBM and designed by Charles and Ray Eames to visually demonstrate fundamental mathematical concepts. Interaction stations demonstrated different concepts including celestial mechanics, the Möbius strip, multiplication, symmetry, and projective geometry. The original exhibit closed in 1998, and is now on display at the New York Hall of Science.
The Hall of Health was added in 1968.
1984 changes
In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics, the museum added new exhibits on earthquakes and economics, and an IMAX theatre. The opening and closing ceremonies for the games were held in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which is adjacent to the museum.
California African American Museum
The California African American Museum was founded in 1981 and housed in the California Museum of Science and Industry building until 1984, when its own facility was opened adjacent to the California Aerospace Museum.

Flight Operations At Los Angeles International Airport September 21 2012
A variety of airplanes landed at Los Angeles International Airport while I waited for the arrival of the Space Shuttle Endeavour. I took up a position at the west end of long term parking Lot C while I waited for the 747/Shuttle stack to fly along Runway 24 Right on the north side of LAX. After the first pass of the 747/Shuttle stack over the north runway, I moved to Lennox Park, east of the 405 Freeway to wait for its pass over Runway 25 Right on the south side of the airport.

EXPOSITION PARK A host of local dignitaries gathered at the California Science Center June 1 to break ground on a 200,000-square-foot pavilion that will become the future home of the space shuttle Endeavour, which will be displayed permanently in an upright, ready-to-launch position.
The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will nearly double the Science Centers educational exhibition space, officials said. The building will include three multi-level galleries, themed air, space and shuttle. The new facility will also house an events and exhibit center that will house large-scale rotating exhibitions.
The highlight of the new space center will be the reconfigured display of the Endeavour shuttle, which has been housed at the Science Center for about a decade. The shuttle is currently displayed horizontally.
In its new home, however, the shuttle will be paired with two solid rocket boosters and large external fuel tank and displayed vertically in its launch position, making it the only shuttle display of its type.
On behalf of the citizens of California, thank you to the many generous supporters of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center project, Gov. Gavin Newsom said during a video appearance at the ground-breaking ceremony. We have achieved this groundbreaking milestone because of all of you, and together we will inspire the next generation.

National Air And Space Museum In Washington Dc
The nation’s most well-known aviation museum is also one of the world’s most visited. Housed in a series of marble-encased cubes on the National Mall are the Wright Brothers’ famous 1903 Flyer, the Apollo Lunar Module, Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis, and countless other historic planes, unmanned aerial vehicles, and space capsules. Russian Air Force Museum At Monino
The Russian Air Force Museum at Monino, an hours train ride north of Moscow, was once off limits to western aviation enthusiasts, and even after the end of the cold war it was still necessary to get a letter of introduction from an official source before it was possible to visit.
Thankfully thats a thing of the past and today visitors can freely come to marvel at a very complete collection of aircraft flown by the air force and civil operators, such as the giant V-12 Homer, by far the largest helicopter ever flown anywhere, and one of many helicopters in the collection.

Rocketdyne Operations Support Center
Every Space Shuttle launch, from the first to the last, was monitored from Los Angeles at the Rocketdyne Operations Support Center . Space Shuttle main engines for the orbiters were originally built by Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, located in the San Fernando Valley. Engineers at the ROSC remotely monitored the SSMEs during launch and for the first eight and a half minutes of every shuttle flight, checking pressures, temperatures, and other readouts until the Shuttle reached orbit. If something went wrong, Rocketdyne staff could provide recommendations to launch control in Florida or Mission Control in Houston. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne donated the entire ROSC to the California Science Center for display in the California Story exhibit.

National Air And Space Museum
The National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, also called the NASM, is a museum in Washington, D.C.. It holds the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world. It was established in 1946 as the National Air Museum and opened its main building on the National Mall near L’Enfant Plaza in 1976. Transformation To California Science Center
In 1988 the museum’s leadership began a to develop a three-phase, 25-year master plan to transform the institution from a science museum to a science education facility. This new facility would be known as the California Science Center. The original museum building closed its doors in 1996 to prepare for the new construction.
Phase I
The new construction was designed by Portland, Oregon-based Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership. Changes included:
- Redesign of the original main building . The north facade of the Science Center retains the facade of former State Exposition Building that opened to the Exposition Park Rose Garden, but the remainder of the original building was demolished.
- Science Plaza – Exhibits outside the main entrance of aircraft and science principles.
- Exhibits in the new building
- World of Life – Explores the science of life in five galleries.
- Creative World – Highlights technology in transportation, communications and structures. Features include a virtual reality exhibit to play sports using virtual reality and an earthquake simulator.
- Special Exhibits gallery – Exhibits in this room have included a Titanic exhibit, a magic exhibit, a toy exhibit, and the Human Body exhibit.

Sneak Peek: Samuel Oschin Air And Space Center
The Samuel Oschin Pavilion is actually a temporary site for the public to view the Endeavour. Inside the pavilion, look for a scale model of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, a spectacular new educational facility with the Endeavour as its centerpiece. Dr. Phillips said, “Dont think that the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will feature only the Space Shuttle Endeavour in launch position. Itll have aircraft, planetary probes, telescopes and spacecraft from the pre-Shuttle programs as well as displays about the exciting future of space exploration and the origins of the Universe.”
Edwards Air Force Base
The aircraft museum at Edwards Air Force Base in the high desert an hour and a half north east of Los Angeles is one of those places which is almost impossible to visit unless youre a serving member of the United States Air Force.
As youd expect for the place where most of Americas latest aircraft have been tested for the last sixty years, there are some very interesting experimental aircraft, as well as exotics like this British designed Gloster Meteor, the first operational Allied jet fighter, which had a long career after the war in various guises, including as a test bed for new radar equipment and other technology.

Edwards, which was formerly called Muroc, is home not only to Air Force research, but also to test programmes run by NASA, which is a civilian agency. You can see several NASA aircraft in the open air section of the museum, together with prototype versions of military aircraft which later entered service in larger numbers. |

Air Force Base Turned Into Museum For Veterans In San Bernardino
SAN BERNARDINO What was once an Air Force base is now a museum in San Bernardino.
The Leland Norton Air Force Base opened in 1942.
When the base closed in 1994, many of the people who worked there vowed to keep the buildings history alive.
A museum that honors war hero Leland Norton and other veterans has opened at the same location.
Admission is free.
