    Not Really Worth A Visit

    Bronx Museum of the Arts

What can I say about this museum. The price of the museum is free which makes it attractive. The problem I had is there is nothing here. Its mostly one floor and its mostly a martin wong exhibit. If you are a fans of his then you will be in heaven. Currently there are 3 exhibits which should on the average take you 15 to walk thru. I cannot reccommend this “museum” unless you are very close to yankees stadium and have 10 mins to waste. Its a must skip even at that price point.

I went to the Museum because they were hosting a Martin Wong exhibit. 5 galleries of Martin’s work including paintings large and small, ephemera, writings, photographic studies for paintings, etc. Truth to tell, I had never heard of the museum. It’s easy to get to on the D train. The neighborhood is a bit dicey. My understanding is that the Museum was started in 1971 and has hosted some wonderful exhibits which are aimed at appealing to the neighborhood, The Bronx, and the world at large. My daughter and I plan to always check on what’s going on there. And, admission is free.

The Project Includes The Addition Of A Multi

The Bronx Museum of the Arts on Grand Concourse and 165th Street Courtesy of the Bronx Museum of the Arts

The Bronx Museum of the Arts, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has embarked on a $21m capital project to construct a new multi-storey entrance and lobby. The project, supported by city and state funds, is being overseen by the New York-based architecture firm Marvel and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, on behalf of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and is expected to be completed in 2025.

The museum last underwent a renovation between 2004 and 2006 as part of a $19m expansion designed by the Miami-based firm Arquitectonica, encompassing the addition of a 17,000 sq. ft wing comprised of galleries, offices and an outdoor sculpture courtyard. The Marvel-led renovation will connect the two buildings and feature large street-facing walls for art on the corner of Grand Concourse and 165th Street.

The Bronx Museum was founded in 1971 by community leaders and activists to boost cultural activity in the borough, through a partnership between the Bronx Council on the Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which loaned around 30 paintings from its collection for the museums inaugural exhibition. It was relocated from 161st Street to to a former synagogue donated by the city of New York on 165th Street in 1982.

    What You Will See

Here you will not see great masters of the past, but rather risk discovering your new favorite artist. In a short 40 years, the museum has amassed an impressive collection of contemporary art. The museum showcases the challenges and triumphs of modern-day Bronx residents, and therefore much of the collection was produced by minority artists, often as-yet undiscovered traditional galleries. Temporary exhibits are the museum’s real strength. Creative, contemporary and challenging, the museum’s exhibits appear on critic’s < a href=”http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/12/09/arts/design/best-art-2015.html?_r=1″ target=”_blank”> best of lists'< /a> far more than a museum of this size would suggest.
