Mention pioneer-era writer Laura Ingalls Wilder and most people flash to a 9-year-old girl in a brown calico pinafore laughing and tumbling down a prairie hillside, as in the 1980s TV series. But long before that Laura captured hearts on screen, the real Laura Ingalls lived out a year of her childhood here in the Driftless, in the village of Burr Oak, Iowa.

In 1876-77, Laura, with her parents, Charles and Caroline, and sisters, relocated to Burr Oak as caretakers of the Masters Hotel, a property owned by family friends from another famous stop on the Laura trail Walnut Grove, Minnesota, site of Lauras book On the Banks of Plum Creek.

Burr Oak is often referred to as The Missing Link in the Little House book series, between the familys homestead in Minnesota and their pursuit of a fresh start in De Smet, South Dakota. The Masters Hotel, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places, is the only childhood home of Laura Ingalls Wilder that remains on its original site.

But why is it missing? The author herself was known to pare down fact for the sake of the storyline, says Barb Olson, director of the modern-day Laura Ingalls Wilder Park & Museum in Burr Oak. Laura would say, A good writer doesnt involve too many characters. Or more simply, backtracking into Northeastern Iowa didnt follow the books narrative of pioneer expansion into the American West.

The Little House On The Prairie Museum

LHOPM is a non-profit historical site and museum dedicated to preserving the homestead of Laura Ingalls Wilder, 13 miles Southwest of Independence, Kansas. As a 5013 organization, the goal is to continue to educate the public about the author Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House on the Prairie Books, and life on the Prairie in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The museum stands on the original land where Laura Ingalls Wilder lived with her family in a one-room log cabin in 1870. Memories of her time here later inspired her to pen the indelible classic, Little House on the Prairie. She then created a series of nine books geared towards children but loved by all.

The books depict the adventures of her family as they traveled across American pioneer country by covered wagon. The mission of the Little House on the Prairie Museum is to encourage a love of reading, Kansas history, the Kansas Prairie, and help keep the memory of Laura Ingalls Wilder alive through the preservation of the Kansas homestead of the Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The Museum serves the greater Walnut Grove area as a research and genealogy resource for local history and as the repository for historical artifacts from the area. While Laura Ingalls Wilder is undoubtedly the area’s most famous resident, the Museum’s mission includes the collection, preservation, and display of all aspects of local history. The grounds inlcude nine buildings including a 1870s railroad depot, an onion-domed home from 1904, the Masters Hotel built in 1876, and several buildings devoted to the display and understanding of local history.

Almanzo & Laura Ingalls Wilder Association , incorporated June 5, 1987, is a volunteer, historic, educational non-profit organization. The museum/home-stead consists of 84 acres of farmland, woods, restored ORIGINAL post and beam constructed farmhouse , reconstructed post and beam framed barns and outbuildings, a museum/visitor center/research library/ archives/gift shop/ office building complex, replica one room schoolhouse, orchard, covered picnic pavilion, and nature trail to the Wilder family frontage on the Trout River .

Laura Ingalls Wilder House

The Laura Ingalls Wilder House is a historic house museum at 3060 Highway A in Mansfield, Missouri. Also known as Rocky Ridge Farm, it was the home of author Laura Ingalls Wilder from 1896 until her death in 1957. The author of the Little House on the Prairie series, Wilder began writing the series while living there. The house, together with the nearby Rock Cottage on the same property, represents one of the few surviving places where she resided. Shortly after her death local residents initiated legal steps to acquire the house through the incorporation of a non-profit organization to preserve her legacy. Owned by the Laura Ingalls Wilder Home Association, the house is open to the public for tours. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991.

Rocky Ridge Farm In Mansfield Missouri

When the Wilder family first moved in, there was just a one-room log cabin on the property. Over the course of 17 years, the family built their farmhouse themselves which is one of the historic sites fans can visit today. You can also see Laura’s vegetable garden which was pivotal to the family getting enough food during the long winters as well as the Great Depression. Just walking around the property, you’ll feel like you’re a part of Wilder’s process that led to the classic tv series that brought her beloved Little House series to the small screen.

If you’re a big fan of Laura, you have to plan a visit to the Laura Ingalls Wilder – Rose Wilder Lane Museum. It has the most Laura Ingalls Wilder artifacts in the world. According to the museum’s website, you can see “Pa’s fiddle, handwritten manuscripts for the ‘Little House’ books, keepsakes of the Ingalls and Wilder families, tools and articles made by Almanzo, needlework made by Laura,” and more. There is even an area devoted entirely to Laura’s only child, Rose Wilder Lane, who also became an accomplished author.
