Has to be one of the best children’s museums in the country. We’ve been there 3 straight years and the grandkids loved every visit. There is something different every year to see and do. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Grandkids ask every year when are we are going back. We really enjoy taking them because it’s fun for them and for us and very educational at the same time. The Childrens Museum of Indianapolis is located on the northside of downtown Indy. Visitors can use public transport or take advantage of the plentiful on-site parking. Youll know you made it when you see the dinosaurs bursting out of the building!

You can plan ahead and book your tickets online or over the phone, saving your family money by ordering before you visit. But visitors are always welcome to purchase admission on the day of your visit. General Admission includes access to the museum as well as the Riley Childrens Health Sports Legends Experience when its in season.

Not just for youngsters only, the Childrens Museum of Indianapolis is the largest facility of its kind in the world anchored by a massive water clock and towering Chihuly glass sculpture, it’s packed with five floors of interactive, educational fun. Life-sized dinosaurs bust through the museums outer shell, making quite a first impression and psyching visitors up to discover the Dinosphere area inside. Other sections highlight archaeology, space exploration, science, and global cultures. The Riley Childrens Health Sports Legends Experience joined the mix in 2018 to get kidsand parentsmoving with a dozen different sports activities on miniature outdoor fields, tracks, courts, and courses for family-friendly competition.

Part of the worlds most famous racetrack, Circle City visitors with a need for speed can indulge in racing nostalgia at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Here, fans can take a deep dive into auto racing history by marveling at the legendary Borg-Warner Trophy and Indy 500-winning cars, with accompanying info on the drivers who piloted them to victory. Whats On Level Two Of The Childrens Museum

The second level is home to the rotating exhibits. With the Dinosphere temporarily closed, the museum has invited a few prehistoric friends to hang out for a bit. Patrons can get their dinosaur fix by checking out Bucky the teenage t-rex and Dracorex hogwartsia.

Also, on the second floor youll find seasonal exhibits. In years past you could find themes like DC Superheroes, a circus big top, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pirates & Princesses, a Weather themed exhibit and more. There is usually an exhibit for the toddler-preschool set like Dora the Explorer, author and artist Mo Williams, and Paw Patrol. In the fall and winter these rotating exhibits leave to make way for the Haunted House and Jolly Days, and then new exhibits are installed after the New Year.

Wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Stroller rental, a coat check, and lockers are also available for an additional fee for you to stash your coats, bags, and whatever else you dont want to lug around for hours. Compose yourself, use the restroom, fill your water bottle at the drinking fountain, and take in the fun features youll experience before you even get your tickets scanned! Check out the larger-than-life Bumblebee Transformer rotating in the middle of the entryway. Hes an actual prop from the movie Transformers!

After you have your ticketspurchase online or from the ticket counteryou have to decide if you want to visit the Riley Childrens Health Sports Legends Experience indoor and outdoor exhibits or the primary museum first. Your ticket includes both experiences, but the entrances are separate you will need your tickets for entry into both areas. Do not throw away or lose your tickets if you want to get from one side of the museum to the other. Tickets purchased online in advance can be scanned directly from your phone.

This is a new exhibit expected to be here until 2023. Hear stories from local Black artists, learn about their lives and discover how they came together to create a colorful mural in Indianapolis during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Nancy Noel

Also on the second floor, a temporary exhibit featuring the work of local artist Nancy Noel will open Nov. 13, 2021. Over decades, Noel sold millions of prints, published eight books, and created more than 1,000 original works. Her paintings hang in the homes of celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Robert Redford. IPS has an annual enrollment of about 32,000 students attending 59 schools. In 2015, IPS began contracting with charter organizations and nonprofit school managers to operate failing district schools as innovation schools. About 37% of IPS students are enrolled in 20 innovation schools, which are run independently but accountable to the Board of School Commissioners, with the remaining 63% of students attending 39 neighborhood or magnet schools. About 18,000 students are enrolled in tuition-free Mayor-Sponsored Charter Schools , as authorized by the Indianapolis Mayor’s Office of Education Innovation and Indianapolis Charter School Board.

Carousel Wishes And Dreams

Check yourself out in the wobbly, fun-house mirrors before you enter the Mirror Maze. The maze has several escape routes if its over stimulating or the kids get scared. Take a break from the maze and sip tea with a family of bears. Dont miss the huge kaleidoscope.

Behind the maze is an arcade full of nostalgic puzzles and games. Adults and big kids love playing vintage video games.

Adjacent to the arcade is a great spot for littles to burn some energy. Kids can climb, crawl and slide in the play area. Serve ice cream from the retro diner or play in the tree house. Dont miss the topiaries along the benches they are so cute.

The feature of this area is the Carousel. Originally located in Broad Ripple Park, the Carousel was salvaged and rehabilitated for the top floor of The Childrens Museum. It is a favorite stop for young and old alike. Rides are free for members, otherwise its one dollar per person over the age of 2. You have the option to clean your animal before you get on it if you would like. The last ride is 15 minutes before closing every day.

Admission To The Childrens Museum

Once you are in the main building your kids will want to run down the wide ramp in anticipation of whats to come. Before you head into the actual museum, there is a branch of the Indianapolis Public Library called infoZone. Museum admission is not needed to enjoy this 3000 square foot space. infoZone features early learning computers, interactive features, childrens programming, and an expansive book selection .

Continue down the ramp to the ticket counter, seasonal displays, and more. Staff are usually stationed at the bottom of the ramp to greet you, offer a museum map, a guide of the daily schedules, and answer any questions you may have.

Things You Need To Know Before You Visit The Childrens Museum Of Indianapolis

1. Try to park on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the parking garage

The walkway into the museum is between these two floors and youll avoid some extra steps at the end of a long day.

2. Get there early

You can get a head start on the crowds especially at busy times like Spring Break and Christmas by arrive about 15-20 minutes before the museum opens. The main atrium is open early so you can use the restrooms, grab a locker and pick up your tickets.

3. Take a look at the schedule ahead of time

There are several dozen interactive experiences throughout the day and sometimes its worth having a rough outline of what youd like to catch.

There are STEM focused activities scheduled in Science Works for older kids. For younger artists, you dont want to miss the studio time in Playscape. Grab a schedule while youre waiting, or better yet, hop online and look at the offerings before you arrive.

4. Show your kids an employee badge

Just in case you get separated from your child, its a good idea to show them what a Childrens Museum employee ID looks like. It helps your kids know who to ask for help from and the employees are trained in the lost child policies of the museum. Its a simple thing to do but might end up saving you some worry later in the day.

Im not sure what the official policy is on food but Ive never had a problem grabbing a small snack in an out of the way place if needed.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the world’s largest children’s museum. It is located at 3000 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, United States, in the United Northwest Area neighborhood of the city. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is 472,900 square feet with five floors of exhibit halls and receives more than one million visitors annually. Its collection of over 120,000 artifacts and exhibit items is divided into three domains: the American Collection, the Cultural World Collection, and the Natural World Collection.
