How Could We Not Fit A Trip To Milwaukee In The Itinerary Of Our First Usa On
More than the city itself what we really couldnt miss is the Harley Davidson Museum that obviously is in Milwaukee, at the legends head office, there where everything started. We took an Amtrak train from Chicago Union Station to reach, feeling like children going to Disneyland, to Milwaukee Intermodal Station, That is situated 10/15 walking minutes from the Harley Davidson Museum .
Note: Harley Davidson Museum is not just a place for enthusiasts of the legendary custom bike. Here more than a century of American history is told, starting from 1903: bikes used to deliver the mail, for war, for army and police the evolution of the machines, of the comfort books, movies and culture bonded to a symbol and that influenced, closely or from a distance, the lives of all of us.

Creating A Destination For Motorcycle Enthusiasts
HGA worked with Pentagram Architects on this 130,000-SF museum on a 20-acre site in downtown Milwaukee. The complex includes a 60,000-SF museum for permanent exhibits, a 45,000-SF Annex for temporary exhibits and archives, and a 25,000-SF building housing a restaurant, retail, and special-events space.
The exhibit design follows the buildings industrial character. The team developed a chronological narrative, beginning with motorcycles arranged down the center of the main hall. This road links the upper exhibit floor with the lower floor. Along the way, visitors encounter a series of galleries that present the history of Harley-Davidson from its founding to the present, as told through motorcycles, posters, photographs, film clips, and interactive displays.
Throughout, lighting enhances the exhibit experience.
Throughout, telecommunication infrastructure supports the interactive exhibits and building programming to provide a media-rich museum-going experience for visitors.

Milwaukee Since European Settlement
Europeans had arrived in the Milwaukee area prior to the 1833 Treaty of Chicago. French missionaries and traders first passed through the area in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Alexis Laframboise, in 1785, coming from Michilimackinac settled a trading post and is considered the first resident of European descent in the Milwaukee region. Early explorers called the Milwaukee River and surrounding lands various names: Melleorki, Milwacky, Mahn-a-waukie, Milwarck, and Milwaucki, in efforts to transliterate the native terms. In the 19th century, the populace of the eastern side of Milwaukee used the spelling “Milwaukie” while on the western side, “Milwaukee” was used until the modern-day spelling became accepted in the 1880s.
One story on the origin of Milwaukee’s name says,
ne day during the thirties of the last century a newspaper calmly changed the name to Milwaukee, and Milwaukee it has remained until this day.
The spelling “Milwaukie” lives on in , , named after the Wisconsin city in 1847, before the current spelling was universally accepted.
By 1840, the three towns had grown, along with their rivalries. There were intense battles between the towns, mainly Juneautown and Kilbourntown, which culminated with the of 1845. Following the Bridge War, town leaders decided the best course of action was to officially unite the towns. So, on January 31, 1846, they combined to incorporate as the City of Milwaukee and elected Solomon Juneau as Milwaukee’s first mayor.

Permanent Exhibitions And Architecture For A Museum Devoted To The Iconic American Motorcycle Showcasing Its History Culture And Engineering
The Harley-Davidson Museum designed by Pentagram showcases the history, culture and engineering of a uniquely American icon. Occupying a 20-acre reclaimed industrial site in the heart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the museum design presents a new paradigm for the integration of a corporate museum into its local community, while also clearly presenting the Harley-Davidson design story to a global community of enthusiasts.
Conceived of as a factory typology within an urban fabric, the $75 million, 130,000-square-foot museum design consists of three interconnected buildings with space for permanent and temporary exhibitions, an extensive archive of motorcycles and Harley related memorabilia, a restaurant, a café and a retail store. Inspired by the bike rallies in places like Sturgis and Laconia, the museum has both indoor and outdoor components that create a new neighborhood within the city and allow for a continuously changing street display of visitors bikes. The factory typology extends to the interior, which has an exposed structure and is organized with large open spaces, lined with mezzanines and four large towers.

Celebrating An American Legend
Founded in a small shed in 1903 by William S Harley and brothers Walter, Arthur and William Davidson, Harley-Davidson now has it’s history rooted in American Culture. Discover some of it’s legendary models available to view right here at our historic dealership.
When you first set eyes on the stark beauty of an original 1914 Harley-Davidson, you can only imagine the day it rolled off the line to be test ridden by one of the founders around the block in Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee. Though it retains its appeal through old photos, visit us at the Warr’s museum and discover why nothing compares to admiring this amazing piece of engineering in the flesh.
This bike is still ridden by our MD John Warr and is a regular participant in the Annual London to Brighton Pioneer Run for pre-1915 veteran motorcycles.
Visiting The Harley Davidson Museum
The entrance to the museum is 20$ but its free to Veterans and HOG members. The smell of rubber, oil and paint, the rumble of the engines and those black walls where the orange of details catches your attention are the best welcome one can imagine.Together with us, taking a dive in this legendary world there are HOG chapters, Veterans, MCs, families and amazed families. In their eyes you can see the reflections of what, I guess, they can see in ours: love, pride, astonishment. Thats the strength of Harley-Davidson, make you feel part of something huge. Doesnt matter you race, color or religion: if you ride a Harley youre a brother. And this is also true in here, where perfect strangers exchange opinions, ideas, comments but most of all smiles.
Walking through the museum is like walking through history: all Harley models are displayed and told, from the first one of 1903 all the way to the latest ones, rare models included. It is not just an exposition, though. In the first room, for example, it is possible to make every Harley engine model sing, the most famous V-Twin in the world. Playing that music in this room is almost like starting it up on the saddle, the feeling its pretty similar. Music to the ears of passionates.
When you arrive at the Gas Tank Gallery, where on a wall are displayed fuel tanks in a thousand of colors and all shiny, your eyes will shine too. Thos vivid colors, thos perfect curves which much remind you of many roads.
