Digital Representation Of Collections

A Symposium on Haremhab: General and King of Egypt

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

In May 2022, the Met and the World Monuments Fund announced a collaboration of digital work for the 2024 reopening of the African, ancient American, and Oceanic art galleries. The digital project “aims to bolster the understanding of several historic sites in sub-Saharan Africa,” in particular sites that have been minimally explored by Western museums.

Portrait Of Gertrude Stein By Pablo Picasso

Famous American author Gertrude Stein was an early adopter of European art and would often host world-renowned European artists in her Parisian apartment. She personally befriended Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Matisse among others.

Picassos success is often partially attributed to Steins friendship because she encouraged his craft by purchasing three of his painting while he was living in poverty. Picassos portrait of Stein is a touching affair, his adoration and respect for the subject is obvious.

The portrait of Gertrude Stein is special for two reason: Its one of Picassos final paintings during his Rose Period and Stein so cherished the portrait that she held onto it until her death.

The portrait was bequeathed to the Museum of Modern Art before being transferred to The Met. Today, its considered one of the most famous paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The Judgment Of Paris Lucas Cranach The Elder

Rank: 76

Cranach the Elder was an enthusiastic supporter of Martin Luther, but Protestant rectitude did not preclude him from painting female nudes. In fact, he limned nine versions of The Judgment of Paris. The story relates historys first beauty pageant, with a golden apple figuring as the prize contested by Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Asked to be judge, Zeus, knowing a no-win situation when he saw one, dumps the job on Paris, Prince of Troy. In Cranachs rendering, a crystal globe substitutes for the golden apple, while a tree on the left offers a nice compositional counterpoint to the three goddesses clustered on the right. They look so much alike, one can surmise that theyre the same modelsuggesting that Cranachs naked aim is an examination of female anatomy, front, rear and side.Howard Halle

Perseus With The Head Of Medusa

Painting the Metropolitan Museum

Antonio Canova | 18046 | Marble | Gallery 548

The Countess Valeria Tarnowska of Poland purchased this replica of Perseus. The original Perseus that Canova made is in the Vatican Musuems.

Canova took his inspiration for this piece from Greek mythology. Perseus was the slayer of the Gorgon Medusa and rescued Andromeda from the sea monster. He was a demi-god being the son of Zeus and Danaë. A wily king tricked Perseus to obtain the head of Medusa.

Since her gaze turned anyone to stone, he guided himself to her by the reflection of his shield. He then beheaded her while she slept. Canova chose this victorious moment for his art piece.

Like most artists before him, Canova would have been extremely influenced by classical artists. While today, artists can freely visit a museum, back in the 18th century the best place to visit where the Vatican Museums. A perfect example of influence for this statue is the Apollo Belvedere from the Vatican. The refined, noble face is almost a direct copy from the Apollo.

The Toilers Of The Sea Albert Pinkham Ryder

Rank: 93

With his use of tonalism to evoke emotion in his otherworldly land and seascapes, Ryder was an idiosyncratic American artist who foreshadowed modernist ideas. In this piece, the ochre glow of the full moon casts its dramatic light across a stormy sea and the simplistic suggestion of a boat.Heather Corcoran

Bacchanal: A Faun Teased By Children

Gian Lorenzo Bernini | 161617 | Marble | Gallery 534

Gian Lorenzo Bernini was like King Midas- almost anything he touched turned to gold. He was by far the most prolific and famous sculptor in the Italian Baroque Period. Bernini was only 18 years old when he created this, therefore it contrasts with his later works which are more refined.

Needless to say, being 18 years old and creating something of this caliber is quite impressive. You can already see his attention to minute detail and the expressiveness of the figures. Therefore this is a foreshadowing of his Santa Teresa or Apollo and Daphe which are in Rome.

Bacchanal: A Faun Teased by Children is a playful statue where a Faun appears to be at the mercy of two small children. A Faun is a mythical forest creature and therefore even a bit ironic that human children would be playing with it. Starting back in the Hellenic age, adding children to artwork became quite popular and had a resurgence during the Baroque period.

The influence of his father, the Florentine-born Pietro, can be seen here in the buoyant forms and cottony texture of the Bacchanal. The liveliness and strongly accented diagonals, however, are the distinctive contribution of the young Gian Lorenzo.

The Denial Of Saint Peter

The biblical story of Saint Peter is riddled with deceit and betrayal. Peter betrayed Jesus three times, and his denial is depicted in this famous painting by Italian painter Caravaggio. Carvaggios style is unique due to his mastery of light mixed with heavy shadows. As such, the eyes direct exactly where theyre meant to.

The profound painting evokes strong emotions and is full of symbolism. You may notice the three fingers pointing at Peter, this alludes to the three times he betrayed Jesus. You need not be an art connoisseur nor religious to appreciate this famous painting at the Met.

Metropolitan Museum Of Art

Location

The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, colloquially “the Met“, is the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among 17 curatorial departments. The main building at 1000 Fifth Avenue, along the Museum Mile on the eastern edge of Central Park on Manhattan‘s Upper East Side, is by area one of the world’s largest art museums. A much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from medieval Europe.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 with its mission to bring art and art education to the American people. The museum’s permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings, and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, , and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes, and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from 1st-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries.

The Dance Class & Little Dancer

You may have seen photos of The Dance Class in your school textbooks. This famous portrait at The Metropolitan Museum depicts a group of ballerinas alongside their mothers, awaiting the completion of a ballerinas examination while the instructor watches.

The ballerinas are housed in the old Paris Opéra which burned down a year before the painting was complete. This painting, and its companion piece housed at the Musée dOrsay, are considered Edgar Degas most ambitious works on the theme of ballet.

Not only was Edgar Degas a talented painter, but he was also a remarkable sculptor. Youll find a beautiful statue of a ballerina called Little Dancer of Fourteen Years in the same room as The Dance Class. Take some time to admire the sculpture because the facial expression is fascinating.

The French Rooms From The Htel De Varengeville

One of the best things to see at the Metropolitan Museum of Art are the period-specific reconstructed rooms. My favorite collection consists of the French rooms originally used as private residences in 18th century Paris. The rooms were located within the opulent Hôtel de Varengeville.

The detail is striking and I find myself absorbed by the mesmerizing beauty regardless of how often I visit. I highly recommend swinging by, especially for Francophiles, because this is one of the most enjoyable things to see at The Met.

Plus, these rooms are located right next to the sculpture of Ugolino and His Sons, making it a natural next stop.

I Devotion And Renaissance

After emerging in Florence, Renaissance culture flourished and spread across Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Moving away from the medieval worldview, centered on Christian faith and theology, it idealized and sought to give “rebirth ” to the older humanist values of ancient Greece and Rome.

Italian Renaissance painters developed realistic, three-dimensional means of expression, taking their cue from classical antiquity. In contrast to the rather flat depictions of Christ and the Virgin Mary typical of the Middle Agesâotherworldly images that emphasized their sanctityâRenaissance paintings were inclined to render them as fully rounded human figures. The space surrounding figures in Renaissance art also started to be arranged more rationally, such as by using the one-point perspective method to suggest depth. And, during this period, mythological painting featuring ancient Greek and Roman anthropomorphic deities joined religious painting based on Christian themes as a major genre.

This chapter presents seventeen works by leading painters of the Italian and Northern Renaissance.

The Cathedrals Of Wall Street Florine Stettheimer

Rank: 90

This painting celebrates the New York Worlds Fair and the 150th anniversary of George Washingtons inauguration. At the start of World War II, the U.S. economy experienced a bump, a reason behind Stettheimers over-the-top patriotism. Inserting herself into the party, politicians and financiers, text and image, artist and subject cavort in a fantastical arrangement.Jennifer Coates

The Portraits By Lily Martin Spencer

Spencer was a talented painter that portrayed the reality of male-female relationships in a patriarchal society. The Met is home to one particularly fascinating collection of her paintings:

  • Young Husband: First Marketing
  • Young Wife: First Stew

These two famous paintings at the Met hang side-by-side and depict the early years of marriage in a humorous and playful way.

The husband is asked to procure groceries from the market, something he has clearly never done before. Hes embarrassed and attracts gazes from amused onlookers.

The second portrait is equally amusing and picks up where the last portrait left off. The wife attempts to make a stew from the random jumble of groceries her husband brought home . The wife wearily peels an onion while her perplexed helper looks on.

Spencer sought to illuminate the social anxiety at the time running a household efficiently and does so flawlessly.

In my opinion, these are some of the most beautiful paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Spencer was a masterful painter and these specific paintings were singled out for their technical expertise when she debuted them in 1856.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has acquired 80 Indian paintings and drawings from the collection of the late artist Howard Hodgkin. The celebrated British artist had hoped that his full collection, comprising 122 works spanning from the 16th to 19th centuries, would be acquired by the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, but the museum rejected the offer last year amid concerns that some of the works could have been illegally trafficked out of India.

The 38 works in the collection that do not have verifiable provenance will continue to be owned by the Howard Hodgkin Indian Collection Trust but will be on long-term loan to the Met. The full collection will be included in an exhibition slated to open in 2024, per Hodgkins wish that the collection be kept together after his death.

In a statement to The Art Newspaper, a spokeswoman for the Met confirms that the museum acquired only pieces that had a clear provenance, and that the museum is thrilled at both of these developmentsto have purchased a number of works from the broader collection, and to be able to present the entire collection of the public in 2024.

Woman With A Parrot Gustav Courbet

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City

Rank: 86

Courbets painting of a reclining woman caused a scandal when it debuted at the Salon of 1866, with critics decrying the womans pose and wild hair. But Courbets realistic treatment of the subject won the approval of the Academy, and his work also inspired innovators of later movements, including Manet and Cézanne.Heather Corcoran

The Met Changed My Life

Despite starting Museum Hack, Ive never taken an art history class.

Theres a semi-secret 3rd floor attached to this room!

Ive never really been someone who regularly goes to museums.

And yet now, I went to this place in Central Park. I had this experience and it infinitely changed my life.

This sculpture was made around the year 3000 B.C. THAT IS INSANE.

So I think about that a lot.

We staged a dance party in this room once.

Self Portrait With Straw Hat

Vincent Van Gogh | 1887 | Oil on Canvas | Gallery 825

Van Gogh painted over twenty self-portraits of himself! Dont be so fast to judge him as the biggest narcissist on the planet, however. Many artists used themselves as models to practice on since models were quite expensive.

A classic example of Van Goghs gifts of color and expression, this painting is deceptively simple in its design. Hundreds of tiny paint strokes give the painting a moving, lively quality, and the simple contrasting color schemes allow the image of Van Gogh to pop off the canvas. The light palette and straw hat suggest the kind of summer days and rural subjects that were Van Goghs obsessions during his short life.

What many people dont know is that there is a different painting on the other side of the canvas. Van Gogh painted the Potato Peeler in 1885 and it shows a peasant peeling potatoes. In 1887, he turned the canvas over and painted himself in a straw hat.

I purposely bought a good enough mirror to work from myself, for want of a model.
