Main Gallery Exhibits On The Second Floor

“Freedom on the Horizon” Performed by Nastassia Parker

When you arrive at the top of the stairs, youll notice several doors leading to various exhibits. Youll want to start in the correct door so you can work chronologically through the history of the revolution. Keep an eye out for the Enter Here sign.

There are four sections along the path, and Ive outlined a little about each one below to help you know what to expect.

The Road to Independence

While I knew the Revolutionary War involved the famous line, Not taxation without representation, I didnt know the events that lead up to the heavier taxes on the American colonists. As I started making my way through the first two rooms, I learned about the events that led to higher taxes.

Numerous touch screens in the room featuring Bostons Liberty Tree allow you to interact with and learn information about the time. As you enter the next room, youre taken to a place Id visited in person a couple years ago Minute Man National Historical Park and the bridge where the first exchange of gunfire took place. Its the fight referred to as The Shot Heart Round the World.

This section of the museum takes you through the formation of an American army and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Theres even a short film you can sit down and enjoy before you move to the next portion of the museum.

Where To Start Your Visit: Theater And Special Exhibit

Check in at the main desk in the rotunda to purchase your tickets. If you would like to add an audio guide, you can. While the audio guide tells you more historical details, you can read similar details on the exhibit walls, too. So would you rather read, or listen?

As you enter the museum, check in at the Lenfest Myer Theater for a short introductory video. It puts you in the right mindset for your visit to the museum.

Next, explore the special exhibit area on the same floor as the theater. During my visit, I explored the Cost of the Revolution. A new exhibit will open in August 2020: When Women Lost the Vote: A Revolutionary Story, 1776 1807.

After walking through the special exhibit area, head up the grand stairway to enter the main exhibit area.

Last week, I left us as we approached Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. We arrived at the hotel about 4:30 and after checking in made our way to the park. It was our first visit in three years due to COVID. The newly renovated visitors center was closed, but the park was open.

That evening, we joined in with the other Encampment attendees at the hotel for a member reception. Although Thursday was a fun filled day, I am going to fast-forward to Friday. Well come back later, but with the July 4th Independence Day holiday coming up Monday I wanted to visit Philadelphia today.

Varied Cast Of Participants

Our unofficial tagline is you dont know the half of it, says Stephenson, and for us that means broadening the storys scope to include a very diverse cast of characters. So, yes, youll venture through deadly battles and take deep dives into the crafting of the Declaration of Independence. You’ll find yourself reliving the eras familiar adages and actions and encountering the iconic heroes responsible for them. Some tea is dumped in a harbor, the times try mens souls, without liberty one man will choose death.

But, again and again, youll be introduced to those whose participation in the creation of the modern worlds first democracy are not as well-known. They include many women, Native Americans and enslaved Africans.

So, stop and spend some time on the little things. Note, for instance, an engraving from the early 1770s thats modestly titled Phillis Wheatley, Negro servant. The image was pulled from Wheatleys Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, the first published book of poetry by an African American author, which is exhibited nearby. She wrote it while enslaved, though she was later emancipated and married a free Black man.

Museum Of The American Revolution In Philadelphia

Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park, Georgia: MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN ...

While on business in Philadelphia, I was excited to spend some time at the Museum of the American Revolution. Id walked the Freedom Trail in Boston and stood on the bridge in Massachusetts where the famed Shot Heard Round the World was, well heard. So learning about the American Revolution as a whole was intriguing.

During my visit, I learned about the events leading up to the Revolutionary War and it wasnt just the taxes on tea. There were several interactive exhibits, inspirational quotes and short films that provided great insights. I wish my kids couldve been with me, but Ive definitely flagged the museum for a future family vacation.

Heres a rundown of what you can expect at the museum as you plan your visit to Philadelphia.

Parking Plaza & Amenities

Theres no dedicated parking for the Museum of the American Revolution. Its just what you can find in the immediate area. If youre making a day of Independence Park, theres an underground parking garage under the Independence Visitor Center a few blocks away. Otherwise, the museums website has some suggestions.

Outside the museum is a small plaza with benches, cannons, and some bas-relief carvings on the walls.

The museum cafe is pretty robust, with several lunch-type options and plenty of snacks. The gift shop likewise is well-stocked. Bathrooms are on both floors. And again, if you dont want to climb the staircase, there is an elevator.
