How To Buy Citrine Jewellery

Citrines are available in a wide range of sizes. They are used to create delicate earrings as well as cocktail rings and large pieces of jewellery. When buying a citrine gemstone you must keep the cut, colour, clarity, and carat of the stone in mind.

Cut: In nature, these gems are available not only in a wide range of sizes but also many different shapes. Hence, they can be cut in a number of ways. The round, emerald, teardrop and princess cut are very popular. They can also be cut into unusual abstract forms for statement jewellery.

Colour: The warm colour of a citrine is what makes it special. Pale yellow stones are easily available and much cheaper than those with an orangish brown hue. The darker the colour, the more expensive the stone will be. However, when buying dark citrines, one must ensure that the stone is natural and has not been heat-treated.

Clarity: Citrines are categorised under type I clarity. The most beautiful ones are those without visible inclusions and colour zoning. Colour zoning may be seen in the form of zebra stripes or tiger stripes. Also look out for fractures when you buy citrine jewellery online or offline.

Carat: Citrines are easily available in a range of sizes up to 20 carats. Since large gemstones are not very rare, the price of the stone increases gradually with relation to its size.

Citrine: Everything You Need To Know About The Birthstone For November

Citrine tones range from juicy lemon yellow to beautiful shades of amber. The yellow colour is caused by traces of iron in the quartz. This occurs very rarely in nature, so most citrine is made by heat-treating other varieties of quartz – usually purple amethyst or smoky quartz, which are both more common and less expensive. By applying heat to these gems, they turn from their original colour to a gorgeous shade of gold. Natural citrine is almost always a pale-yellow colour and commands a far higher price than the processed variety. The most sought-after citrine gemstones are a clear, radiant yellow-to-brownish-red colour, however this is particularly rare for naturally-occurring citrine. This rarity means that the natural stones that fall into this colour category have a particularly high price tag. The most abundant sources of natural citrine are found in Bolivia, Madagascar, Mexico, Spain and Uruguay. Amethysts that are heat-treated to a golden colour are mostly mined in Brazil, although other sources include France, Russia and the US, specifically California, Colorado and North Carolina.

The History Of Citrine Gemstones

Citrine boasts beautiful autumn hues that can range from light yellow to bright orange. Often reminiscent of a forest on a crisp fall day, Citrine is appropriately appointed the national birthstone of November. The name citrine replaced the standard name of yellow quartz in 1556. Although the name has a number of potential sources, all of them relate to citrus and are once again a nod to the stones orange-based hues. One of the most likely sources for the name is the French word citron, meaning lemon.

Citrine has been used ornamentally for thousands of years. In fact, in Ancient Greece, the stone was used as a decorative gem during the Hellenistic Age between 300 and 150 B.C. In addition, 17th century Scottish men used citrine on the handles of daggers and swords for decorative purposes. However, there is also record of entire sword handles that were crafted from citrine. More recently, citrine was particularly popular during the Art Deco era between World War I and World War II. During this time, movie stars wore oversized and elaborate citrine jewelry.

Today, citrine is primarily used for its color and clarity in designer jewelry pieces and is crafted into a variety of designs. The majority of modern day citrine comes from Brazil however, natural citrine can also be found in the Ural Mountains of Russia, France and Madagascar, among other places. Darker colors, including medium golden orange, are typically considered more rare, and as a result, more valuable.
