- Henry Morrison Flagler purchases 140 acres between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Worth.

- On February 11, Flagler opens his first luxury Palm Beach hotel on Lake Worth, the Royal Poinciana, which becomes the largest hotel in the world at the time.
- On April 2, the Florida East Coast Railway begins service to West Palm Beach.

- Flagler enlarges a winter home on the oceanfront side of the property forming the Palm Beach Inn , an extension of the Royal Poinciana and the only oceanfront hotel south of Daytona Beach.
- Flagler also extends the Florida East Coast Railway to Miami and builds the Port of Palm Beach, a 1,000-foot pier off the Palm Beach Inn, which allows guests to travel via steamship to Nassau, Havana and Key West.

- Flagler contracts Alexander H. Findlay to build the first nine-hole golf course in Florida.

- Due to Palm Beach’s growing popularity and new reputation as a winter paradise, the Royal Poinciana is enlarged by half its size.

Henry M Flagler Museum Palm Beach
On the west side of Palm Beach Island youll find the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, which offers tours of Henry M. Flaglers Gilded Age-era estate, Whitehall. Completed in 1902 and used by Flagler and his wife as a winter retreat until 1913, the 100,000-square-foot mansion is today a National Historic Landmark. The museum has restored Whitehall in all its gilded glamour, and highlights Flaglers accomplishments in shaping Floridas history and Americas Gilded Age. Changing exhibitions and special programs are offered throughout the Palm Beach season, and visitors can climb aboard Flaglers private Railcar No. 91 which dates to 1896. Hotel Addition Virtual Tour
Visible today to the west of the Grand Ballroom is the ground floor of the 1925 Whitehall Hotel addition, originally used as the hotels dining room. Above this ground floor was a ten-story tower of 300 hotel rooms. In 1963, this tower was removed in order to return the home to its original appearance during Flaglers life.
Originally, the area to the west of the Grand Ballroom was a columned, marble floored veranda which overlooked a small garden and provided a commanding view of Lake Worth. This garden was flanked by two one-story wings, the south wing housed Flaglers office and an office for his secretary while the north wing housed a servants dining room and housekeepers apartment. Adjacent was the main kitchen and pantry. When Whitehall was converted to a hotel in 1925, these wings were removed to make way for the Hotel tower addition. The kitchen and pantry were also altered by the hotel and no longer exist in original form.
Today, the West Room and the other parts of the hotel addition house the Museums Archives, the Museum Store, the Business Office, the Lecture Room, and space for Museum programs.

The Breakers Hotel History
In January of 1896, Henry Flagler opened his second hotel in Palm Beach, which he named the Palm Beach Inn. It was a simple and unpretentious hotel overlooking the ocean a quarter-mile from Flagler’s luxurious Hotel Royal Poinciana. During an expansion project in 1903, the Palm Beach Inn caught fire and was destroyed. By 1906 it was rebuilt and renamed The Breakers Hotel and opened to universal acclaim. Room rates started at four dollars a night and included three meals a day. The guest register read like a “Who’s Who” of early twentieth-century America – Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan vacationed alongside United States presidents and European nobility.

The Breakers That Stands Today Circa 1926
The Florida East Coast Hotel Company selected the architectural firm Schultze and Weaver, which later designed the Waldorf-Astoria, Pierre, and Sherry Netherlands hotels in New York City, to rebuild The Breakers. During an earlier trip to Rome, Leonard Schultze had admired the Villa Medici and decided to use this building, Italian Renaissance in design, as the architectural inspiration for The Breakers facade.
On December 4, 1925, the New York City-based Turner Construction Company signed a contract to build the new seven-story Breakers. Construction began in January 1926. More than 1,200 construction workers labored around-the-clock, while 72 artisans from Italy completed the magnificent paintings on the lobby ceilings. The immense structure was completed for $7 million in a scant 11½ months and opened on December 29, 1926, just in time for the start of the Palm Beach season.
Exceeding everyone’s expectations, the hotel opened showcasing a 200-foot-long main lobby with an arched, hand painted ceiling a vast Florentine Dining Room, richly decorated with a beamed ceiling modeled after the Palazzo Davanzati in Florence magnificent North and South Loggias and shaded terraces and landscaped patios.

Flaglers Fortune And Floridas East Coast
When Henry Morrison Flagler first visited Florida in March 1878, he had accumulated a vast fortune with the Standard Oil Company in Cleveland and New York as a longtime partner of John D. Rockefeller. In 1882, with the founding of the Standard Oil Trust, the then 52-year-old was earning and able to depend on an annual income of several millions from dividends. Impressed by Floridas mild winter climate, Flagler decided to gradually withdraw from the company’s day-to-day operations and turn his vision towards Florida and his new role of resort and railroad developer.
In 1885, Flagler acquired a site and began the construction of his first hotel in St. Augustine, Florida. Ever the entrepreneur, he continued to build south towards Palm Beach, buying and building Florida railroads and rapidly extending lines down the state’s east coast. As the Florida East Coast Railroad opened the region to development and tourism, Flagler continued to acquire or construct resort hotels along the route.
