Visiting The Uss Midway Museum: Know Before You Go

Hours of OperationThe USS Midway Museum is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. Last admission occurs at 4:00 pm. Since crowds can be an issue on this historic vessel, it’s in your best interest to arrive as early as possible.

ParkingThe museum offers 300 parking spaces on Navy Pier for cars only. The cost is $5.00 for one hour or $10.00 for up to 12 hours. The limit amount of parking is another reason to arrive early! If the parking lot is full upon arrival, simply use any of the metered lots nearby.

Touring the MuseumOn average, guests explore the USS Midway Museum for three hours. During this time, visitors are invited to take advantage of the free audio tour, docent-led tours, and expert demonstrations. To avoid the crowds, do the docent-led tours first.

What to WearSince you’ll be walking quite a bit and navigating steep stairs, dressing comfortably is highly recommended. Ladies, do not wear skirts! All guests should wear comfortable walking shoes.

What Time Do They Open

The web site says 9am, on arrival we were told they didnt open until 9:30, but they didnt open the gate or ticket booths until around 10am. Luckily, we purchased advanced discount tickets at our hotel. Since we waited in line so long we skipped the line for free Audio tour and explored on our own. Other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed the museum. Our girls loved exploring the lower decks experiencing the daily lives of the crew. There were so many switches, knobs and buttons for them the push it gave us plenty of time to read the displays. I loved how they reflected the different eras and change in technology. My husband enjoyed all the aircraft on the flight deck. We visited Monday, July 27th

My wife and I stopped at the Midway Museum knowing that we did not have much time to be there . It was well worth our time though. We only saw a sliver of what the ship has to offer, but what we saw was quite amazing. They have different exhibits that tell a little history of the Midway and how it got its name. They also have different types of aircraft that you can learn about as well. The coolest thing that I experienced was talking with some of the workers. They were retired Navy vets who had served on the ship. I’m sure there is more to the ship than what I am telling you, so go check it out when you are in San Diego. We can’t wait to go back.

What To Know Before Visiting

The USS Midway Museum

Visiting the USS Midway Museum involves a lot of walking, stair climbing, and bending. Thats because this WWII-era U.S. Navy ship has very narrow stairs, low ceilings, and cramped hallways that may pose unique challenges for some visitors. That said, there are several elevators, and about 60% of the exhibits are wheelchair accessible.

The sights on the USS Midway that are most popular with visitors are deep inside the ship, far from natural light, wind, or other weather. Dont skip a visit if you happen to be in San Diego on one of our rare drizzly days.

As mentioned above, the flight deck on top is one of the biggest draws. It is totally open to the sky, and accessible no matter what the weather. Bring some sun protection if you plan to spend time here .

Its a good idea to wear layers when youre visiting the USS Midway Museum. You might want a hat or a cover up when youre exploring the flight deck and its nice to be able to take off a layer when you check out the cramped hot quarters below.
