About Whitney Museum 2022
The Whitney Museum of American Art was initially known as the Whitney. This is an art museum located in Manhattan. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the museum. He was a wealthy and prominent American socialite and patron, after whom the museum is named.
The museums main focus is to collect all the American art of the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum has a permanent collection of artworks, ranging from the 19th century to this century. There is a massive collection of more than 25,000 sculptures, paintings, films, videos, drawings, prints, photographs, and artifacts from old to new media.
There are more than 3500 artists whose works are exhibited in the museum. The museums main emphasis is to display the art of those living legends and upcoming artists. The museum also conducts annual and biennial exhibitions, an excellent platform for the younger generation artists.
The museum was opened in 1966, and until 2014 it was housed at 945 Madison Avenue at Manhattans Upper Eastside. This was a building designed by Marcel Breuer and Hamilton-Smith. This museum was closed in October 2014, and the same was relocated to a new building designed by Renzo Piano located at 99 Gansevoort Street in the west village of Lower Manhattan.
The new museum was reopened in the year 2015 on the 1st of May. The museum also houses an excellent auditorium, four large terraces all of these are linked with the outer staircases.

How Much Time You Need To Visit The Whitney Museum
From my point of view, a two-hour visit is ideal. Although at first it may not seem like much time, realize that, when visiting the place with a specialized guide , the time is twice as long as if you saw it on your own. If you still have a few minutes to spare, my advice is to take a stroll through the Meatpacking District, a neighborhood of about twenty blocks with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants and nightlife. In 1961, the Whitney began seeking a site for a larger building. In 1966, it settled at the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and 75th Street on Manhattan‘s Upper East Side. The building, planned and built 19631966 by and Hamilton P. Smith in a distinctively modern style, is easily distinguished from the neighboring townhouses by its staircase façade made of granite stones and its trapezoidal windows. In 1967, Mauricio Lasansky showed “The Nazi Drawings”. The exhibition traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, where it appeared with shows by Louise Nevelson and Andrew Wyeth as the first exhibits in the new museum.
The Whitney developed a new main building, designed by Renzo Piano, in the West Village and Meatpacking District in lower Manhattan. The new museum, at the intersection of Gansevoort and Washington Streets, was built on a previously city-owned site and marks the southern entrance to the High Line park. Construction began in 2010 and was completed in 2015. It cost $422 million.
The new building is much more expansive and open than the old ones. As one New York Times review described the building:
