It is our utmost priority to keep you and our staff and volunteers safe. In England, face coverings are no longer required by law.However, the government suggests that you continue to wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you may come into contact with other people you do not normally meet. If you prefer to wear a mask, please feel free to do so.

Public Transport: Metro 51, 53 and 54: stop Waterlooplein, tram 9 and 14: stop Waterlooplein.

Turn off the A10 ring road at junction S112 from the south, or junction S116 coming from the north. Follow the signs to Amsterdam Centrum, and to P Het Muziektheaterparking garage.

    The Jewish Historical Museum is located in the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam.     • Arrive early. If you are late or miss your window, you will not be allowed in
    • Unfortunately, the old part of the museum and the Secret Annex are not accessible for people using wheelchairs. They would, however, have access to the modern part of the museum.
    • Payments in the museum, museum cafe, and museum shop can be done only by bank or credit card.
    • They have a cloakroom where you can leave your coat, bag, or umbrella. Only bags that are smaller than an A4 sheet of paper can be carried inside. Leave your large bags at the hotel, or deposit them at the Amsterdam Central Station.
    • Visitors are not permitted to smoke in the museum complex.
    • Those under the influence of alcohol, drugs or similar substances will be denied admission.
    • Children under 12 years old may only visit the museum when accompanied by an adult.
    • Food and drinks cannot be bought into the museum complex. Refreshment purchased in the museum café cannot be consumed outside that designated area

    Of The Jewish Cultural Quarter

    The Jewish Museum is a museum focussed on Jewish religion, culture and history, particularly with respect to the Netherlands and Amsterdam. It was formerly known as the Jewish Historical Museum.

    It occupies 4 historic Ashkenazi synagogues near Waterlooplein within the old Jewish quarter of east Amsterdam.

    The museum foundation was set up in 1930 to preserve Jewish heritage and to promote Jewish art. Originally on display at the Weighing House on Nieuwmarkt, much of the museums collection was confiscated during WW2. It reopened its doors in 1955 and slowly expanded, moving over to the current location in 1987.

    The museums permanent exhibition is housed between the 2 grand buildings the Great Synagogue and the New Synagogue .

    Across the street lies the Portuguese Synagogue also part of the so called Jewish Cultural Quarter.

    You will enter the atmospheric Great Synagogue hall first at basement level this space is used to explore the Jewish faith and traditions. Many Jewish ceremonial items are placed in context of the synagogue itself.

    Heading upstairs is a section on the history of Jews in Netherlands between 1600 and 1900 how the Jews arrived in the tolerant city of Amsterdam, what they did to make a living and the difficulties they faced.

    Continuing on into the New Synagogue with its striking central glass roof dome is a display on the history of Jews in the Netherlands from 1900 to the present day including the volatile war period.
