We finally arrive at the Modern Jet & Space Age gallery with Douglas A-4B Skyhawk, McDonnell Douglas F/A-18A Hornet Blue Angel 1 on display together with Gemini spacecraft and Apollo Service Module mock-ups. There is also a center pavilion with a Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina, Ford 5-A-B Trimotor, Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17, McDonnell Douglas F-4J/S Phantom II and a Bell AH-1E Cobra helicopter. It is available for reservation for special events.

During your journey through time, youll meet more than 200 luminaries from the history of aviation and space exploration in the world class International Air & Space Hall of Fame exhibit that weaves throughout the museum as it continues to grow with deserving new inductees each year.

Mt Soledad Veterans Memorial
Where: 6905 La Jolla Scenic Dr S, La Jolla, CA 92037Located high atop Soledad Mountain in La Jolla, the Mt Soledad Veterans Memorial honors war veterans from all branches of the military. Features include a 43-foot cross originally dedicated to veterans of the Korean War and black granite plaques dedicated to individual veterans. Visitors can also enjoy awe-inspiring panoramic views of San Diego County from the Pacific Ocean to the mountains.

The museum also has a number of aircraft engines on display. This gallery contains a , , , , , , , and .
The was returned to the restoration shop to reskin the wings, but has since been returned to the gallery.
Access to the Edwin D. McKeller Pavilion of Flight is from this portion of the museum. This is also where the Education Center is which hosts monthly Family Day activities. Guests will also locate the restrooms for the museum in this section of the building. On some days lunch is available on the outer patio outside of this portion of the museum.
There is an exhibit of the , also known as the Poor Sailor’s Airline, in the museum. A replica of the airline’s first ticket office has displays about the airline with a smile and includes stewardess uniforms from the 1950s through 1980s, including the hot pants worn during the 1970s.
, registration N533PS, a commercial airliner collided with a private over San Diego on September 25, 1978. A memorial plaque honoring those who died on Flight 182 and on the ground is located at the museum, near the Theodore Gildred Flight Rotunda. On the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, a tree was planted next to the North Park branch library, and a memorial plaque was dedicated to those who lost their lives.

California Revealed From San Diego Air And Space Museum
California Revealed is a State Library initiative to help Californias public libraries, in partnership with other local heritage groups, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials – books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more – that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs. The Studio Of Los Toltecas En Aztln
In 1968, the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department gave artist permission to use the then abandoned Ford building as a studio for 6 months. Torres eventually invited other Chicano artists to the building and they eventually formed . In 1970, Los Toltecas en Azatlán created a proposal to create in an effort to keep the building as a space for cultural production. The proposal was eventually denied by the San Diego City Government, but the Los Toltecas en Azatlán decide to remain and occupy the building until 1971, when the city agreed on another space for the proposed Chicano cultural center within Balboa Park.

Edwin D Mckellar Pavilion Of Flight
The original courtyard of the Ford Building was used like a showroom during the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition. Now it houses many of the larger aircraft in the museum’s collection. These aircraft include the , , , and . It also inculdes a replica of the and several racing aircraft, and two Ford cars on loan from the .
The on display in the pavilion was the aircraft flown by and in Vietnam from the . Cunningham was the first ace to get all of his kills with missiles. The aircraft here has both radar guided missiles along the belly and infrared heat seeking missiles loaded on the wings.
The museum also rents the pavilion to special events from lectures to dinners. Upon request volunteer museum docents can be available to provide additional information about the exhibits during these events.

The museums first gallery is dedicated to early flight, where you will stand beneath a model of the Montgolfier brothers hot air balloon of 1783the first manned vehicle to ever break the bonds of gravity and lift humans above the Earth.

New Point Loma Lighthouse
Located at the tip of the Point Loma peninsula under Cabrillo National Monument, the New Point Loma Lighthouse is the setting of Vipers house in the film. During Viper’s and Maverick’s walk in the garden, the audience gets to enjoy a glimpse of the coastal house and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Today, the lighthouse keepers quarters house U.S. Coast Guard officers who are fortunate to enjoy the prime oceanfront property.

San Diego Air & Space Museum
Where: 2001 Pan American Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park is home to a massive collection of classic military aircraft ranging from the dawn of flight through WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the jet age and beyond. The Museum also features an International Aerospace Hall of Fame, honoring the inventors, engineers, pilots and industrialists who created and built airplanes. Active military admission is free.

At the far end of the gallery is the Boeing GPS-12 Satellite. This was an operational ground spare. Launched into space for the original GPS constellation were 23 operational spacecraft and two on orbit spares. A number of spares were flight ready on the ground in case there were malfunctions on orbit, these spacecraft could be launched as replacements. When the next generation of spacecraft were developed, the ground spares were no longer needed and one was donated to the museum. On display is a flight-ready GPS satellite.
Along the inside wall of this gallery is the cockpit canopy of the . This supersonic rocket plane first flew on June 8, 1959 with at the controls. Also in the display case near the canopy is Crossfield’s flight suit from the X-15 and the air conditional case used by when he was an X-15 pilot. Eight of the X-15 pilots flew into space to earn their astronaut wings.
The many astronauts who grew up and lived in the San Diego area include , the only astronaut to command missions in Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo.

It is the worlds largest flying museum with the ambitious goal to acquire, restore, and conserve combat aircraft in honor of American military aviation. The more than 175 aircraft currently in its fleet known as the CAF Ghost Squadron fly in air shows and events around the country with the purpose of educating the public about the men and women who have flown and fought for Americas freedom.

The museum originally opened in 1989 on MCAS El Toro, just up the I-5 in Orange County, moving south to San Diego in 2003. As many as 35,000 people have visited the museum in a year.
There are 40 historical aircraft in various states of preservations at the site, including the World War II-era General Motors FM-2 Wildcat, “one in the line of production models of the better known F4F Wildcat” that was a workhorse in the Pacific, and a Sikorsky HUS-1 UH-34D Sea Horse, a helicopter model that flew thousands of missions in Vietnam.
