The time is 1836 and life is pretty hard. Mostly youll find men and women doing chores chopping wood, tending animals, gardening, creating pottery, and cooking. Both kids and adults are encouraged to join in, and the actors will happily answer all your questions while in character.
The highlight of this sprawling living history museum might just be the interactive 1869 balloon ride.
Full of exhibits and activities that help you understand the trials and tribulations of manning a balloon, the fun culminates with a tethered balloon ride high above the prairie. Ive heard the view is spectacular, but Ill keep my feet planted firmly on the ground, thank you very much.
Conner Prairie is open year-round, but some outdoor exhibits close during the winter months. Go out of your way for this one, its well worth it!

Todays estate and gardens cover 8,000 acres, far more than the original 500 acres in George Washingtons time. In the olden days, there were 5 farms, each self-sufficient with livestock as well as slaves.
It was the initiative of the local Ladies Association to begin the restoration in the mid-19th Century with the renovation of the mansion a top priority. Half a century ago, it was enrolled as a National Historic Landmark.
Todays visitors can not only enjoy the buildings but visit the working farm, take a hike on a designated trail, and stroll through the four gardens.
Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum
Atchison, KansasThe first woman to ever fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific in 1937 while attempting to circumnavigate the world. Her death may still be a mystery, but we do know where the fearless aviator was born: Atchison, Kansas. Not only does the town throw an annual Amelia Earhart festival, it maintains this massive hillside earthworks portrait of the pioneer, made from vegetation and mosaic and viewable by platform. Nearby, the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum holds Muriel, a 1935 Lockheed Electra 10-E airplane identical to the plane flown on her last journey. And the two-story house where she grew up is a museum run by the Ninety-Nines, the womens aviation organization Earhart helped form. You can check out the controversial Lucky Strike cigarette ad that ended up costing her some endorsements, because Amelia Earhart changes for no one.

Originating in the mid-20th century, this important art museum is one of the oldest museums dedicated to Latin American and Caribbean art in the country. Visitors are shown around the very grounds on which slaves toiled in the Southern heat to cultivate sugar and rice during the 18th and 19th centuries. Original slave cabins, the Big House, and several powerful memorials are part of a moving, deeply insightful tour.

Shoal Creek Living History Museum Kansas City Mo
Time Period: 19th Century Missouri village
Shoal Creek Living History Museum is a small 80-acre village located in Hodge Park in Kansas City, Missouri.
The museum maintains twenty-one structures with seventeen authentic 19th-century buildings dating from 1807-to 1885. While the museum grounds are free to wander through and are open every day, the real treat comes in checking out the special events that are offered throughout the year.
During special events, the village comes to life with historical reenactments that include skits, skirmishes, and interesting demonstrations.
First Saturday events are free during the summer. Even if you dont make it to one of the special events, dont pass Shoal Creek by. The landscape is beautiful and the historic buildings are meticulously preserved.

Americas Living History Museums Are Not Just For Americans Tips For Todays International Travelers
The heightened need for security in recent times has meant that international travelers have to comply with American regulations to gain entry to the Country. Old settlers just had to turn up, but its not like that anymore.
Some nationalities, those from Visa Waiver Countries, need to apply in advance for ESTA approval if traveling by air or sea but not if coming overland. It is not necessary to have any other documentation.
It is easy to check on your ESTA application status online by inputting passport and application details.
Those from outside the Visa Waiver Countries will need a visa.
Once approved, an ESTA visa allows for multiple entries over the next two years unless the travelers passport expires. It does not permit a traveler to stay for 2 years in a row.
In general, each visit is limited to 90 days. In those 90 days, you may well enjoy seeing plenty of the USA. These Living History Museums spread across the country are certainly worth some of your time.
