Propped high up in the air, measuring 30-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, its task might be just as big: welcoming you to the only museum of its type, tracing women in basketball from when they started playing in 1892, just one year after the sport was invented. The museum was founded in 1999 and now celebrates over 171 inductees, plus has artifacts on display like a 1915 Spalding Official Guide for Womens Basket Ball, edited by Senda Berenson Abbott, writer of the original 1899 rules and considered the Mother of womens basketball. Youre also invited to show off your own skills on three basketball courts, a dribbling course, and a passing area.

Conner Prairie Fishers Indiana

Time Period: 19th Century Indiana

Step back in time and immerse yourself in life on the prairie in 19th-century Indiana at Conner Prairie.

The time is 1836 and life is pretty hard. Mostly youll find men and women doing chores chopping wood, tending animals, gardening, creating pottery, and cooking. Both kids and adults are encouraged to join in, and the actors will happily answer all your questions while in character.

The highlight of this sprawling living history museum might just be the interactive 1869 balloon ride.

Full of exhibits and activities that help you understand the trials and tribulations of manning a balloon, the fun culminates with a tethered balloon ride high above the prairie. Ive heard the view is spectacular, but Ill keep my feet planted firmly on the ground, thank you very much.

Conner Prairie is open year-round, but some outdoor exhibits close during the winter months. Go out of your way for this one, its well worth it!

Where to Stay: We recommend the Holiday Inn Express, which is very family-friendly with an indoor pool, beautiful rooms, and within a short drive of Conner Prairie.

Todays visitors can not only enjoy the buildings but visit the working farm, take a hike on a designated trail, and stroll through the four gardens.

Atchison, KansasThe first woman to ever fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific in 1937 while attempting to circumnavigate the world. Her death may still be a mystery, but we do know where the fearless aviator was born: Atchison, Kansas. Not only does the town throw an annual Amelia Earhart festival, it maintains this massive hillside earthworks portrait of the pioneer, made from vegetation and mosaic and viewable by platform. Nearby, the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum holds Muriel, a 1935 Lockheed Electra 10-E airplane identical to the plane flown on her last journey. And the two-story house where she grew up is a museum run by the Ninety-Nines, the womens aviation organization Earhart helped form. Whitney Plantation Wallace Louisiana

Texas Best – History Museum (Texas Country Reporter)

The history of this country is rooted in slavery. If you dont understand the source of the problem, how can you solve it?

Ibrahima Seck, Director of Research at the Whitney Plantation.

Louisianas history is marred by slavery and the plantation system. In the view of retired white lawyer John Cummings, Louisiana, and the wider United States, has yet to seriously reconcile its past. Having originally purchased Whitney Plantation with what he concedes were purely real estate-based motives, Cummings helped transform the derelict site, located between New Orleans and Baton Rouge along the Mississippi River, into a one-of-a-kind Black history museum focused entirely on slavery. On arrival, guests are allocated a card detailing the name and story of an enslaved person. Visitors are shown around the very grounds on which slaves toiled in the Southern heat to cultivate sugar and rice during the 18th and 19th centuries. Original slave cabins, the Big House, and several powerful memorials are part of a moving, deeply insightful tour.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Kansas City Missouri

I wont have it made until the most underprivileged Negro in Mississippi can live in equal dignity with anyone else in America.

Major League Baseball star and civil rights activist Jackie Robinson speaking in 1960.

The world of American sports that we see today, led by Black athletes, is in stark contrast to the segregated playing field of the past. From the turn of the 20th century, having been barred from participating in the Major Leagues, talented Black baseball players were forced to organize their own games and competitions, with professional leagues eventually spawning in the 1920s. It wasnt until Jackie Robinson took his place at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 that a Black player would play non-segregated professional baseball again. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is one of the most intriguing Black history museums, detailing a story that transcends sport. It documents the tale of defiant Black baseball players who traveled across the United States, refusing to let the injustices of society stop them from enjoying Americas pastime.Visitors can stand among great Black players like Buck ONeil, Satchel Paige, and, of course, Jackie Robinson on the Field of Legends. Watch the history of the Negro Leagues come to life in a documentary narrated by James Earl Jones, and see exhibits full of clay-stained memorabilia belonging to these unsung sporting and cultural pioneers.

The heightened need for security in recent times has meant that international travelers have to comply with American regulations to gain entry to the Country. Old settlers just had to turn up, but its not like that anymore.

Some nationalities, those from Visa Waiver Countries, need to apply in advance for ESTA approval if traveling by air or sea but not if coming overland. It is not necessary to have any other documentation.

It is easy to check on your ESTA application status online by inputting passport and application details.

Those from outside the Visa Waiver Countries will need a visa.

Once approved, an ESTA visa allows for multiple entries over the next two years unless the travelers passport expires. It does not permit a traveler to stay for 2 years in a row.

In general, each visit is limited to 90 days. In those 90 days, you may well enjoy seeing plenty of the USA. These Living History Museums spread across the country are certainly worth some of your time.
