Philadelphia Museum Of Art Parking Facility & Garden

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In an effort to expand parking to accommodate its growing membership, the Philadelphia Museum of Art commissioned Atkin Olshin Schade Architects and Walker to design a 442 space below-grade parking structure.

Due to the aesthetic sensitivity of the site, PMA decided to build the structure into a hillside and place a sculpture garden on its roof. Although visually concealed, the perimeter areaways provide light and ventilation, permitting the garage to maintain its open parking structure code classification.

Walker defined the parking supply/demand and the financial impacts for PMA, provided functional design, code assistance, vehicle wayfinding, PARCS and operational consulting.

The Parking Access and Revenue Control System is a central pay-on-foot system with cashiers in the museum, and POF machines in the sculpture garden elevator lobby and at exits.

Vehicular circulation is created by two-way traffic on a single helix with two access points.

The Philadelphia Museum Of Art Sculpture Garden And Parking Garage

We are proud of our ongoing relationship with the Philadelphia Museum of Art . Over the years LF Driscollâs work for the museum has included scales both highly visible and highly specific.

Beneath a hill adjacent to the Main Building now lies a four-level, 442-space concrete parking garage. The only visible portion of the garage is a glass pavilion that protrudes delicately on the parking structureâs 26,000sf green roof and allows access to the garage below. The green roof features a sculpture garden, walking paths, a fountain, and a granite plaza.

Before construction began, our team excavated 60-80 feet of earth containing thousands of boulders weighing four to seven tons each. The boulders filled 500 dump trucks and were donated to Fairmount Park Association, and were used to reinforce and support running banks and river paths throughout the park system. Before construction on the garage began, extensive structural repair work to the 13â 6â diameter combination sanitary/sewer tunnel was completed. Our team performed an epoxy skim coating process on the tunnel, which sealed the various voids and cracks in the concrete and Belgian block joints beneath the future parking garage, preventing leaks that could have undermined the garage footings.

Our team completed this project in 2009 for the PMA under budget and ahead of schedule, with the garage opening six weeks ahead of the planned opening dateGo to http://www.philamuseum.org/information/45-506-391.html.
