Antwerps Royal Museum of Fine Arts , founded in 1810, is a museum housing collections of historical art from the fourteenth to the twentieth centuries. The grand cultural venue has had a contemporary renovation and extension thanks to Dutch firm KAAN Architecten.

Visitors can enjoy a promenade surrounded by art, as well as the exterior landscape experienced through multiple lookouts over the city and inner patios. KAAN Architecten has been working on the 100 million euro renovation since the early 2000s, which includes hiding a minimalist wing within the existing 19th-century structure. Only visible from the inside, the new building aims to preserve the integrity of the original building, and is made up of a sequence of bright white exhibition halls with glossy floors and marble details. Guests can either walk through the original exhibition rooms tinted in dark pink, green and red with oak doors, tall columns, and ceiling ornaments conveying a grandeuror head the other direction, straight towards the new wing. The experience is never predictable yet always in balance: both routes are challenging and designed to serve the art, explains a statement from the firm. In addition to being one of the last examples of bold neoclassical architecture in the city, the museums collections embrace seven centuries of art: from Flemish Primitives and expressionists, to paintings, sculptures, and drawings.

Antwerp As An Arts Hub

These days, Antwerp may not be considered a world-wide hotspot for contemporary art. However, the city was once one of the world’s most important art capitals and many hope it will become that once again. The newly renovated building certainly can’t hurt. Rotterdam-based Kaan Architects won the bid with its proposal to integrate the building’s four courtyards into their design. As a result, the new construction has an interesting effect whereby the new exhibition halls featuring 20th and 21st century art are located in the heart of the neoclassical-style building.

The expansion also gave the museum 40% more exhibition space, allowing curators to show more artworks than ever before. The high-gloss floors and bright white walls of the new halls take some getting used to, since the aesthetic is a stark contrast to the dignified flair of the old building. Yet this was precisely the intention of the architects: to create two museums in one. “The museum of the 21st century and the museum of the 19th century could hardly be more different,” says Dikkie Scipio, architect and co-founder of Kaan Architects in Rotterdam.

In the meantime, Ensors good friends Dr. Albin Lambotte and his artistically acute spouse Emma had built up a collection in their house in Antwerp that was comparable to the one in the museum. Compelled by dire financial needs, they proposed to the ‘Commision for purchases of the Royal Museum in Antwerp a price of 1.000.000 Belgian francs to become the owner of a collection of drawings, still lifes, seascapes and major works. The Antwerp museum purchased six works: Girl with Upturned Nose, an early work from 1879, a study entitled The Wait , Still lifes with Chinoiseries , the well-known The Oyster-eater , a crucial landscape Adam and Eve Expelled from Paradise and the Sloops . The remaining works from the Lambotte collection provisionally remained in private possession in Antwerp. Later, these works ended up in various institutions both at home and abroad: Pierrot and the Skeletons , Self-portrait with Masks , Menard Art Museum), The Garden of Love , Toyota Municipal Museum of Art) and Children At Their Morning Toilet .

The Academy In The Merchant Exchange

The Academy signals a great consequent step in the expansion of the 17th-century collection. In 1663, Philip IV grants the right to establish an academy within the Saint Luke Guild following the examples of Rome and Paris. Former Dean David Teniers II sees herein the way in which to bring new élan to the artists’ life. The Antwerp city management makes places in the merchant exchange available and the Saint Luke Guild moves the collection of the painters’ chamber to a hall in the eastern wing of the gallery. The painters and sculptors are asked to make works available and there is also a dais where the rhetoric chambers De Violieren’ and the De Olijftak,’ with whom the Saint Luke Guild was associated, could perform.

Jacob Jordaens I and Theodor Boeijermans make three pieces for the ceiling of this new painters’ chamber that are still kept in the collection. Jordaens’ Pegasus and Industry and Trade Promote the Flowering of Art and Boeijermans’ Antwerp, Nourishing the Painters allow it to be seen how the inspiration of painting and poetry are united and leads to the flourishing of the arts in Antwerp. Dirck van Delen complements this programme with the Allegory of the Arts, in which poetry and painting sit lovingly next to each other.

Artus Quellinus I gifts a white marble image of Luis de Benavides Carillo, Marquis of Caracena, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands as thanks for his support.

    Museum In Antwerp Shines Again

The building on a magnificent boulevard of Antwerp was closed for more than eleven years, much to the frustration of tourists. Now, after a 100-million-euro makeover the reopened museum displays 650 works spanning seven centuries, including numerous masterpieces of art history. Each gallery is painted in its own color: from burgundy to dark green. Works include altarpieces by Hans Memling, Jean Fouquet and Simone de Martini, as well as Belgian surrealist and expressionist painter James Ensor.

“No other museum in the world has as many Ensors as Antwerp,” says van Hout. “Ensor was born in 1860 in Oostende, Belgium, and his circle of friends was in Brussels, but his collectors lived in Antwerp. That’s how the paintings came to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts.”

The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp is a museum in Antwerp, Belgium, founded in 1810, that houses a collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the fourteenth to the twentieth centuries. This collection is representative of the artistic production and the taste of art enthusiasts in Antwerp, Belgium and the Northern and Southern Netherlands since the 15th century.

The neoclassical building housing the collection is one of the primary landmarks of the Zuid district of Antwerp. The majestic building was designed by Jean-Jacques Winders and Frans Van Dijk , built beginning in 1884, opened in 1890, and completed in 1894. Sculpture on the building includes two bronze figures of Pheme with horse-drawn chariots by sculptor Thomas Vincotte, and seven rondel medallions of artists that include Boetius à Bolswert, Frans Floris, , Peter Paul Rubens, Quentin Matsys, Erasmus Quellinus II, and Appelmans, separated by four monumental sculptures representing Architecture, Painting, Sculpture, and Graphics.

The building stands in gardens bounded by the Leopold de Waalplaats, the Schildersstraat, the Plaatsnijdersstraat, and the Beeldhouwersstraat, formerly the site of the Antwerp Citadel.

Conservators With A Passion For Ensor

Walter Vanbeselaere, chief conservator of the museum from 1949 to 1973, consecrated the artistic worth and preferences of LArt contemporain. The purchases, exhibitions, politics and the publications of Vanbeselaere himself were probably decisive for the prominent place that James Ensor has since held in the ‘canon of Flemish and Belgian art. Moreover, with the purchase of works by Van Gogh, Degas and Redon, Vanbeselaere tried to place the Antwerp Ensor collection within an international context.

After WWII, the Ensor painting collection grew to 38 specimens with the Bathing-hut , which the sixteen year-old painter painted in situ, the monumental Roofs at Ostend , the large Bourgeois Salon and The Lady with Fan, or Ensors younger sister Mitche , a puzzling View of Phnosie, luminous Waves and Vibrations or The Roofs at Ostend and a difficult-to-date, distinguished Ensor at his Easel. Before Vanbeselaere departed from the museum, he purchased the famous The Skeleton Painter . Probably Vanbeselaeres option to also establish an attractive collection of drawings in addition was at least as important. Shortly after Ensors death in 1949, his inheritors sold large portions of the estate. The Entry of Christ into Brussels came about via various detours and failed purchase attempts by, among others the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, in Antwerp, and this as a long-term loan by Louis Franck. The work would remain in the Antwerp museum until 1984.

1875: dreams of a new museum

The upshot of all this growth was predictable: the academy museum began to run out of space. Climate control and fire safety were no longer fit for purpose either. The city daydreamed out loud about a new museum of fine arts and, having weighed up all the options, decided in 1875 to build a museum on recently cleared land in the Antwerp South district, where the Spanish fortress had once stood. When the Belgian state also backed the project, there was nothing standing in the citys way.

1877: Competition to Establish a Museum of Fine Arts

Antwerp City Council held a competition to design a new museum but none of the entries was entirely convincing. The city eventually invited the young architects Jean Jacques Winders and Frans Van Dijk to combine their respective designs in a single plan. They took everything into account, from a sense of grandeur to functionality and security.

The new museum would be a standalone structure with galleries located high above the ground. This ensured a safe distance in terms of fire risk between the art and the nearby residential neighbourhood, while potential flooding would not affect the exhibits either. The architects went even further, installing a fire and bomb-proof basement in the middle of the building.
