Sam Reiman, director of the Richard King Mellon Foundation, one of the projects top funders, said in a statement that the aim for the initiative is to make Pittsburgh a national leader in creating new cultural models for American cities. and a magnet to attract and retain young creative talent.

The first part of the two-phased project will extend until 2024, for which a majority of the $30$40 million budget has already been secured through private donations.

The local arts scene in Pittsburgh is nascent, without any major dealers wielding influence beyond the city. The base of young creatives in the area is largely populated with graduates of M.F.A. programs at Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. Some sources in the area say they are seeing changes, with young artists opting to stay local due to the pandemics shift towards remote work and rising living costs in coastal hubs.

With the development project, the Warhol Museum plans to expand Warhol Creative, a workforce program aimed at young people it debuted in September. Focusing on BIPOC, LGBTQ, and immigrant workers, the museum said the long-term goal is to generate $1 million in annual income for workers with the program.

Describing the project as a means to boost the local economy that takes cues from Warhols entrepreneurial spirt, Patrick Moore, the museums director, said in a statement, We now have the plan and resources to follow suit as an agent of change for Pittsburgh.

Were big fans of art museum gift shops. They are usually stocked with fun, funky splurge-worthy items tough to find anywhere else. Portrait of the Boy Eutyches is just one of hundreds of remarkably life-like paintings produced in the ancient Egyptian Fayum region. Noted for their large, expressive eyes, these panels were painted with encaustics . Roman Egypt was a cultural melting pot, and the Fayum portraits reflect the cultural crossroads in which they were created. The encaustic process used by the Romans was developed by the ancient Greeks, and the resulting portraits were placed over the faces of the mummified deada distinctively Egyptian tradition.

“Silver Car Crash ” set a record when it cracked $100 million in 2013.

Andy Warhol may be best known for his pop art iconography of Marilyn Monroe, Chairman Mao and Campbell’s soup cans, but next month, a “haunting” silkscreen print of a mangled car crash will be up for sale at Sotheby’s in New York.

Going under the hammer on November 16 during the auction house’s marquee week, It is expected to sell for upwards of $80 million, according to a press statement.

“White Disaster ” is a colossal image Warhol made in 1963 as part of his “Death and Disaster” series. At the time, Warhol had become transfixed with gruesome and morbid images atomic bomb clouds, electric chairs and how widely print publications reproduced them, believing that readers had become immune to their impact. Of all his work, the series most explicitly dealt with his fixation on human mortality.

A Sunday On La Grande Jatte

– Artist: Georges Seurat

– Year: 1884

It took Seurat two years to finish his best-known work, pieced together from dozens of sketches the artist made of working-class Parisians. Critics panned the 7-by-10-foot painting when it was first exhibited in 1886, dubious of the complicated theory of light and color underpinning Seurats pioneering pointillism. Over the course of the next century, popular opinion buoyed the painting to cult status, inspiring Stephen Sondheim to pen the hit Broadway musical Sunday in the Park with George.

– Artist: René Magritte

– Year: 1946

The works of the Belgian painter René Magritte are frequently head-scratchers, and The Son of Mana self-portrait of the artist with his face obscured by a giant appleis no exception. The apple was one of the artists favorite motifs, but its meaning is uncertain. The title chosen by Magritte is perhaps more illuminating, referencing Jesus Christ. Some critics have called the piece a surrealist interpretation of the transfiguration of Jesus.

– Artist: Francisco Goya

– Year: 17971800

Goya painted two versions of The Majaone naked, the other fully clothed. The painting is believed to have been commissioned by Spanish Prime Minister Manuel de Godoy and was intended to supplement his existing collection of nudes. In 1815, the Inquisition confiscated the painting. Today, it hangs next to its companion in Madrids Museo del Prado.

The Short List Of Warhol Eccentricities

  • Warhol compulsively recorded his conversations. He even lovingly referred to his tape recorder as his wife.
  • He collected taxidermy, including a stuffed lion, peacock, penguin, moose head, and a Great Dane named Cecil. For years, the Dane stood silent watch over The Factory, his NYC artist studio.
  • Warhols drag-queen alter-ego was Drella. He devised the nickname, a portmanteau, by blending Dracula and Cinderella.
  • He had a powerful foot fetish, apparent from his numerous drawings of feet. One of the more bizarre objects in the Time Capsules at The Andy Warhol Museum is a mummified human foot from Ancient Egypt.
  • Finally, to the surprise of many, Warhol was a practicing Byzantine Catholic. Pope John Paul II invited him to the Vatican in 1980.

This final factoid is something that has been somewhat obscured from public knowledge. Perhaps this is because the bohemian circles Warhol frequented considered his religious beliefs unfashionable.

In fact, the newly appointed directorof the Andy Warhol Museum has vowed to increase the amount of exposure visitors receive concerning Warhols faith.

Director Patrick Moore wants to provide the public with a challenge to synthesize Warhols lifestyle as an openly gay man, traveling in highly liberal circles and yet retaining a deeply religious faith. In doing so, the museum will further the artists legacy of defying traditional constructs and viewpoints.

Quirky Personal Habits Of Andy Warhol

Warhol took pride in being a mystery wrapped in an enigma. He once remarked, I never give my background, and anyway, I make it all up differently every time Im asked. This may seem paradoxical for a figure who openly expressed his love for fame and attention.

As much as he enjoyed the limelight, he also retreated to the shadows. Some of his friends recalled that during some parties, he would insist that everyone wear a mask. They suspected that while he wanted to view himself as the life of the party, he needed to do so from behind the protected anonymity of a mask.

While it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction, as it is with all figures who reach near-mythic status before their death, we have compiled a list of interesting personal habits that magnify Warhols intrigue.

Self Portrait With Bandaged Ear

– Artist: Vincent van Gogh

– Year: 1889

Vincent van Gogh is famous for having severed his own ear the strained relationship with fellow Post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin that precipitated the artists self-mutilation is not nearly as well known. Van Gogh spent 1888 working in the South of France and was joined in October of that year by Gauguin. Their friendship deteriorated, and van Gogh didnt react well to the news of Gauguins impending departure. The troubled artist cut off his ear, wrapped in newspaper, and reportedly gave it to a local prostitute for safekeeping. Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear depicts van Gogh in his studio, with the right side of his head wrapped in cloth. In fact, it was a portion of van Goghs left ear that was removed, with the inconsistency in the painting arising from the inverted reflection perceived by the artist while gazing in the mirror.

Famous Paintings And The Stories Behind Them

A picture is worth a thousand words, and like texts, art is often meant to be read through critical deconstruction. Paintings can be far more complicated than they appear at first glance and difficult to decipher if the viewer doesnt speak the same tongue. Iconographythe symbolic language of a given work of artcan be sophisticated and complex, reflecting the collective consciousness or drawn from the artists personal experience. Why would someone eschew the written word in favor of paint and canvas? 20th-century American artist Edward Hopper appears to have had the answer. If I could say it in words, he said, there would be no reason to paint.

The stories told by works of artand about themare, quite literally, the stuff of novels. Johannes Vermeers Girl with a Pearl Earring inspired the novel of the same name by author Tracy Chevalier. The book was subsequently turned into a film starring Scarlett Johansson. Almost 40 years after Irving Stone wrote his biographical account of the life of Michelangelo, Dan Browns The Da Vinci Code turned the life and work of the Renaissance master into a romp through the preceding millennia.
