Mines Museum Of Earth Science

The Mines Museum of Earth Science, formerly the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, is a geologymuseum based in the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado, United States. It was established in 1873 and opened in 1874.

The museum has two floors in which it displays fossils, gemstones, meteorites, minerals, and mining artifacts, including the Colorado lunar sample displays. The museum acts as the Colorado state repository for mineral heritage.

Description

The Mines Museum houses the official Colorado mineral collection. Many displays showcase the mineralogy, geology, and history of Colorado’s mining districts. The Museum is home to one of Colorado’s two Goodwill moon rocks, as well as the Miss Colorado Crown, worn at the Miss Colorado pageant every year. Additional featured exhibits include Colorado gold specimens, historical mining artifacts, meteorites, petrified wood, and fossils.

My husband and I arranged a visit to the museum with friends in October. It was the second time that we had visited the museum– to see that post–and we knew the friends who had not been here would enjoy the visit.

School Group Field Trips

Guided classroom tours are limited to a maximum of 15 students plus teachers/chaperones, per tour. For class groups larger than 15 students, we recommend booking the tour WITH activity . This allows a larger class to be split up into two smaller groups over a two hour period. The indoor classroom may be available for lunch, upon availability and advance request. There are also four large picnic tables outside of the museum for public use.

Elementary Students: $10/student ACTIVITY: Experience the, Magic of Minerals! A hands-on activity that introduces students to the weird, wacky, and wonderful properties of minerals that arent taught in class! Explore phenomena like chatoyancy, double refraction, color-change and more while practicing the skills of scientific observation.

Middle School Students: $10/student ACTIVITY: Spot the Fake: Try your hand at being a museum Curator in, Spot the Fake! Students will inspect a set of donated specimens using basic tools and be charged with finding and rejecting the fakes. Tune your observation skills and walk on the skeptical side. Youll be surprised by fake-looking natural specimens and natural-looking phonies.

Mines Museum Of Earth Science Reopening To The Public With New Entrance Amenities Safety Protocols

The renovated entrance to the Mines Museum of Earth Science features a new gift shop and a reconfigured welcome desk with an amethyst countertop.

The museum on the Colorado School of Mines campus will reopen to the public Saturday, Feb. 27 following a nearly yearlong closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mines Museum of Earth Science will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Reservations are required and COVID-19 safety protocols are in place, including a limit of 10 visitors per floor per hour.

Were excited to finally reopen the doors of the museum to the public with a completely renovated entrance, new exhibits and, yes, new protocols in place, museum director Renata Lafler said. Weve been busy over the past year improving the museum experience for our guests and that includes officially launching our new name, the Mines Museum of Earth Science, to better reflect our mission and one-of-a-kind collections dedicated to the earth sciences and Colorados mineral heritage.

Among the most noticeable changes to the museum:

• A brand-new museum store located at the museums entrance and a new welcome desk with an amethyst countertop
• A new collection of mining artifacts donated by the family of Mines alumnus Frederick R. Dowsett Jr. 69
• Expanded exhibits of Colorado minerals, including a new section dedicated to minerals from the Sweet Home Mine in Alma
• New interactive activities for kids, including Find Blaster to win prizes

Mines Museum Of Earth Science Reopens With A 40lb Piece Of Colorado History

After a yearlong closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mines Museum of Earth Science has reopened to the public.

The museum located on the Colorado School of Mines campus, and formerly known as the Geology Museum, is now open Thursday to Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Were excited to finally reopen the doors of the museum to the public with a completely renovated entrance, new exhibits and, yes, new protocols in place, museum director Renata Lafler told 9NEWS.

Standard COVID-19 safety protocols are in place including mask requirements. Reservations for the museum are also required as only 10 visitors are allowed on the floor per hour.

Currently on the display at the museum is a meteorite that was found in Colorado decades ago.

The museum told 9NEWS the donor used the 40-pound meteorite as a doorstop until he realized what it actually was. He found it in 1941 in a field that belonged to his family.

Other new experiences include a brand-new museum store, a collection of mining artifacts, and a welcome desk with an amethyst countertop.
