Companies Where Women Thrive: The Us Holocaust Memorial Museum

In the competitive nonprofit sector, charitable organizations constantly have to prove themselves and their relative merit, to the general public and to funders, just to survive. Some believe that this requirement to prove worth especially reflects what women in business do every day. And it may explain why many of Americas charitable organizations are driven by female leadership. According to a 2011 Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management study, the number of women could be as high as 74 percent of all nonprofit employees, including in the most powerful, prestigious roles.

To find out why women really are the best man for the job when it comes to running a world-class nonprofit, we sat down with Lorna Miles, chief marketing officer for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The museum, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary of preserving history and educating the public , is also led by a female director and boasts 50/50 gender parity on its senior management team.

Holocaust Museum Security Guard Shot And Killed In Washington

A suspected white supremacist opened fire inside the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington today, killing a security guard who stopped him in the entrance before being wounded by return gunfire.

The museum that commemorates the victims of genocide in the second world war became the scene of bloodshed and panic today, when an elderly man suspected of writing racist antisemitic internet tracts entered the building brandishing a rifle and opened fire on two guards who confronted him.

The killing of security guard Stephen Johns, whose quick action officials credited with saving perhaps dozens of lives, came just five days after Barack Obama visited the site of the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany and implored the world never to forget those who perished in the Holocaust.

“I am shocked and saddened by today’s shooting at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum,” Obama said in a statement. “This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against antisemitism and prejudice in all its forms. No American institution is more important to this effort than the Holocaust museum, and no act of violence will diminish our determination to honour those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world.”

“The security guards performed exceptionally well and exactly as they were supposed to,” Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty told reporters. “In these days and times you never know when someone is going to grab a gun and use it in an inappropriate way.”

Surprising Lessons I Learned Working At The Holocaust Museum

Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum opens its doors ...

The Holocaust Memorial Museum is located on the National Mall in Washington DC.

I started an awesome new job at the beginning of this year: Im a social media producer for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C.

I know, it doesnt necessarily sound awesome in the typical sense. Usually, when I tell people where I work, they respond with something less like Cool! and more like, Oh wow, I went there in eighth grade and it was really sad. And, yes of course its sad. I work with stories from the Holocaust all day, every day. But thats also why I love my job so much. Each morning, I come into work and learn something new that either shakes me up or makes me believe in humanity again. Shall I give some examples? Its time for a listicle.

1. Interacting with Holocaust survivors is unreal.

There are about 70 Holocaust survivors who volunteer their time at the museum whether its staffing the Donor Desk in the Hall of Witness or telling their personal stories in our First Person series.

Honestly, any opportunity I get to interact with the survivors is a highlight of my day theyre each incredible. I got to meet a new volunteer on her first day with us, and after I explained what I did for the museum and that I was new too, she looked at me and said, Im going to tell you something I dont normally talk about.

2. All kinds of people visit the museum and thats a good thing.

3. There are always new and infuriating things to learn about Nazis.

Holocaust Interactive Museum Created At Booker T Washington High

PENSACOLA, Fla. The staff and students at Booker T Washington High School are collaborating to create a Holocaust Interactive Museum in the schools Innovation Center.

BTWHS said they were one of several Florida schools to receive 18 historical posters and a tub full of books about the Holocaust. The schools Innovation Specialist Patricia Ervin, along with her library assistants, the Literary Club, and the Social Studies Department, took the resources provided, researched the images, added props as symbols, and collected books from their own library.

The small Center for Holocaust Learning has tours, photographs, videos, and even a place to reflect and write about the experience.

BTWHS says by suspending the posters from the ceiling with contextual information, the small room became a museum and educational center to bring awareness to one of the most monumental and well-documented genocides in history.

At approximately 12:50 p.m. on June 10, 2009, 88-year-old James Wenneker von Brunn entered the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. with a slide-action rifle and fatally shot Museum Special Police Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns. Other special police officers returned fire, wounding von Brunn, who was apprehended.

Von Brunn was charged in federal court on June 11, 2009, with first-degree murder and firearms violations. On July 29, 2009, von Brunn was indicted by a federal grand jury on seven counts, including hate crime charges, as well as four which made him eligible for the death penalty. In September 2009, a judge ordered von Brunn to undergo a competency evaluation to determine whether or not he could stand trial. On January 6, 2010, von Brunn died of natural causes while awaiting trial.

Von Brunn was a white supremacist, Holocaust denier, and neo-Nazi. He had previously been convicted of entering the Federal Reserve Building with various weapons in 1981 and attempting to place the members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, who he considered to be treasonous, under citizen’s arrest.
