American Museum of Natural History Tickets: The Ultimate Guide

Four stores, three levels, endless possibilities

With 25 connecting buildings spread over 20 acres with more than 1 million square feet of display space, the American Museum of Natural History is the largest natural history museum in the world. Its also home to four permanent retail locations The Museum Shop, DinoStore, The Shop for Earth and Space and Cosmic Shop plus two special exhibition shops that run with the museums exhibition schedule.

The AMNHs collection of more than 32 million specimens provides us in the museum stores the opportunity to offer one of the most diverse collections of products available in any store anywhere, said Michael Sagar, who has worked at the AMNH for the past 13 years as everything from store manager to director of stores. We pay particular attention to connecting the products we carry in our museum stores to the various exhibition halls throughout the museum.

Those exhibition halls are a living institute constantly evolving with new discoveries and ideas, as the museum is a working community of more than 200 scientists that conduct around 100 field expeditions a year all over the world.

Only 1 percent is on display at any given time, but the stores hold countless displays of unique retail products throughout all of the museum stores.

The stores offer everything from dinosaur erasers for 69 cents to a set of amethyst cathedrals that retails for $5,000.

Sue The Tyrannosaurus Rex

SueTyrannosaurus rexSue

On May 17, 2000, the Field Museum unveiled Sue, the largest T. rex specimen discovered at the time. Sue has a length of more than 40.5 feet , stands 13 feet tall at the hips, and has been estimated at between 8.414 metric tons as of 2018. The specimen is estimated to be 67 million years old. The fossil was named after the person who discovered it, Sue Hendrickson, and is commonly referred to as female, although the dinosaur’s actual sex is unknown. The original skull is not mounted to the body due to the difficulties in examining the specimen 13 feet off the ground, and for nominal aesthetic reasons . An examination of the bones revealed that Sue died at age 28, a record for the fossilized remains of a T. rex until Trix was found in 2013. In December 2018 after revisions of the skeletal assembly were made to reflect new concepts of Sue’s structure, display of the skeleton was moved into a new suite in The Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet.

Collection Care And Management

Field Museum collections are professionally managed by collection managers and conservators, who are highly skilled in preparation and preservation techniques. In fact, numerous maintenance and collection management tools were and are being advanced at Field Museum. For example, Carl Akeleys development of taxidermy excellence produced the first natural-looking mammal and bird specimens for exhibition as well as for study. Field Museum curators developed standards and best practices for the care of collections. Conservators at the Field Museum have made notable contributions to conservation science with methods of preservation of artifacts including the use of pheromone trapping for control of webbing clothes moths. In a modern collections-bearing institution, the vast majority of the scientific specimens and artifact are stored in specially designed collection cabinets, placed in containers made of archival materials, with labels printed on acid-free paper, and specimens and artifact are stored away from natural light to avoid fading. Preservation fluids are continuously monitored and in many collections humidity and temperature are controlled to ensure the long-term preservation of the specimens and artifacts.

Nearly 200 American Museum Of Natural History Workers Move To Unionize

Beyond Planet Earth Video Contest

Nearly 200 workers at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City filed a union petition last Thursday, January 27, citing COVID-19 safety and compensation among their top concerns. The staff is organizing with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees District Council 37, the citys largest public-sector employee union, which already represented dozens of workers at the museum.

But the existing unit, Local 1559, was being shredded by management, said Jacklyn Grace Lacey, a senior museum specialist in African and Pacific Ethnology at AMNH for 11 years.

We have only lost positions for years, not gained, Lacey told Hyperallergic. This new effort is meant to be a wall to wall expansion of the entire site.

The new union will encompass 184 employees in a range of positions, from museum educators and post-doctoral fellows to curators and visitor services representatives. As reported by the website Patch, managerial employees, supervisors, and security guards are excluded from the unit.

According to Lacey, however, the organizing effort has been met with resistance from leadership. The museum, she says, has hired Seyfarth Shaw, a law firm notorious for specializing in union avoidance, and is now seeking to terminate her position in a move she describes as part of a concerted and well-documented anti-union effort.
