Restoring An Occupied Historic Cultural Facility

MASS MoCA, a contemporary art museum in North Adams, Massachusetts, is ...

Gilbane provided construction management at-risk services for the third phase of a comprehensive master plan for the mixed use redevelopment of a National List of Historic Places factory mill complex. The 13 acres of grounds in North Adams, Massachusetts, encompasses a vast complex of 19th century factory buildings and occupy nearly one-third of the citys downtown business district. MASS MoCA is ranked among the most visited institutions in the U.S. dedicated to new art and with the latest expansion it is the largest contemporary art museum in the U.S.

The scope of Phase III included the build out of 135,000 SF of interior space, ultimately doubling the space currently available, for museum galleries, performing arts facilities, public circulation and workshop and meeting facilities. Working adjacent to occupied galleries and collection storage areas, noise and dust control were of the utmost importance throughout the project. The team successfully avoided potential impacts to the operational facility through the isolation of construction areas and use of ample ventilation.

The project scope also required lighting and climate control flexibility and coverage throughout the space. New HVAC and lighting systems were specially designed for the exhibit spaces allowing for individual area controls and ability to increase or decrease lighting and temperatures, as needed for current and future exhibits.

    North Adams Massachusetts Museums

It opened in 1999 and is located on the site of a former textile factory in North Adams, Massachusetts. It comprises a collection of more than 100,000 square meters of art and architecture and was opened by the art entrepreneur as one of the largest and most important public art museums in the world.

The building was divided into two construction phases to allow the planned North Adams – Williamstown cycle path to run through the site. To multiply the impact of MASS – MoCA traffic, the city and the museum are working on a series of public and private programs to connect the museums to Main Street.

Many in North Adams hope the expansion and the extra attention it will bring will turn day trippers into overnight guests. The NBCC youth is also committed to bringing a skate park to NorthAdams, as well as a bike-sharing program. The goal for the future is clear: to bring more visitors from outside North Adams to share this great place with them.

North Adams is home to Natural Bridge State Park, located north of downtown. A series of aerial photographs contextualize the expansive presence of the park and the rest of North Adams, which is a picturesque and largely uneventful place. Visit the North American Museum of Natural History, the Natural Bridge or see what else is happening in the city.

Built by the Arnold Print Works, which operated on the site from 1860 to 1942, the complex was used by the Sprague Electric company before its conversion. MASS MoCA originally opened with 19 galleries and 100,000 sq ft of exhibition space in 1999. It has expanded since, including the 2008 expansion of Building 7 and the May 2017 addition of roughly 130,000 square feet when Building 6 was opened.

In addition to housing galleries and performing arts spaces, it also rents space to commercial tenants. It is the home of the Bang on a Can Summer Institute, where composers and performers from around the world come to create new music. Studies Of Masterpieces Art Wall Cascades School Supplies & Drury High School Art Students

Over the past five years, CASCADE SCHOOL SUPPLIIES has sponsored Drury High School Art Students to create large replicas of famous masterpieces ranging from Picasso to Monet, from Renaissance to Pop Art, from subjects such as Mona Lisa to Rosie the Riveter. Most of these artworks are part of permanent collections of museums such as The Clark Art Institute, MOMA, and the Louvre to name a few.

In 2011, President Peter Cote and Vice President Todd Shafer approached Drury High School Art Instructor, Phoebe Pepper about painting boards that would enhance the Cascade building on Brown Street in North Adams. As North Adams is such so richly infused with both public and private artistic endeavors, they decided to pay tribute to great artists of all times. The project was so successful, that it has been continued year to year with a great reception from the public.

Every year since its inception, advanced art students at Drury ask Ms. Pepper if they will get to paint a painting for Cascade. As early as September, they begin to consider which ones havent been attempted that they appreciate and that meet the criteria of world-famous and respected artwork.

    Global Contemporary Art Museum

This 165,000-square-foot exhibition and art storage facility for contemporary art adapts the economical and flexible building system of industrial sheds and the scale, massing, and form of early industrial mill buildings, such as those seen at the nearby Mass MoCA. Its goal is to be the least expensive museum in the world with a budget of less than $200/sf, or one tenth of the cost of typical world-class contemporary museum construction today.

To this end, a repeating, prefabricated steel structure and envelope create series of long, linear bays, providing the large-scale, flexible space required for changing exhibitions of contemporary art. The steel structure rests on a slab-on-grade foundation, typical of big-box stores. Each bay includes a north-facing translucent skylight-monitor to provide daylight and reduce lighting energy consumption, a major operational expense for museums. The insulated panel building roof is left exposed from the interior, and mechanical distribution is routed through open-web truss roof structure, concealed by translucent scrims.

The building is punctuated by a 140 x140 column-free gallery and a series of courtyards. These elements enable orientation, circulation and provide moments of relief within the larger, repetitive structure of the building. The project is divided into two structures, a 35,000-square-foot art storage wing that reaches to the road, and the main 130,000-square-foot exhibition facility.
