New York’s Museum of Modern Art is giving devotees of Spanish painter Joan Miro an opportunity to immerse themselves in dozens of artifacts from the period when he developed his pictorial universe.

Set to open next Sunday, the exhibit “Joan Miro: Birth of the World,” aims to shed light on the artist’s formative years.

“It presents some 60 paintings, works on paper, prints, illustrated books, and objects made primarily between 1920, the year of Miro’s first, catalytic trip to Paris, and the early 1950s, when his unique visual language became internationally renowned,” MoMA said in a press release.

It was in the fall of 1925 that Miro, working at his parents’ country home in Montroig, created “The Birth of the World,” on an oversized canvas measuring 250.8 x 200 cm .

Miró Prints and Books from New York Collections highlights the Museums extensive collection and supplements it with fine examples from local institutions and private collectors. These works in intaglio, lithography, woodcut, and pochoir demonstrate Mirós special attraction to a variety of materials and techniques, and his characteristic inventiveness in using them.

What Is Thereto See

As indicated by its name, the Fundació Miró is dedicated to the artist Joan Miró. The foundation has 217 paintings, 178 sculptures, 9 textile works, 4 ceramic works, and almost the entire graphic artwork made by Miró available.

Obviously, not everything is on display at once, but it still gives you a chance to get to know the artist Miró on several levels and in thematically composed sections. Photographs of the artist at work or from his private life make the visit a bit less formal and help you get to know him on a more personal level.

The Fundació Miró has most of the artists work in one place, as Miró himself donated much of his work to the foundation.

In addition, the foundation also has works by other contemporary artists. In the exhibition rooms, there are regular exhibitions that are going beyond Miró.

Periodically the Museum of Modern Art orchestrates what I call a Miró Immersion, one of those experiences that can make you an art lover for life or, if thats already the case, prompt you to renew your vows. Its an exhibition, of course, and its devoted to the Spanish modernist Joan Miró . But thanks to MoMAs extraordinary holdings in Mirós work and its curatorial familiarity with them, these shows sometimes achieve a pervasive, extra-visual intensity.

This happens in Joan Miró: Birth of the World, especially in an astounding first gallery which is alive with Mirós inventiveness, natural talent and playful malice. The show brings together 60 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and illustrated books made mostly from 1920 to the early 1950s, all but a handful from the museums collection. The focus is The Birth of the World, a prescient painting that might even qualify as a lost masterpiece. Painted by Miró in 1925, it was largely unknown, except to a handful of artists and other art-world denizens until 1968, when it was included in Dada, Surrealism and Their Heritage, MoMAs comprehensive survey of the two movements that introduced anti-materialism and Freudian explorations of the unconscious into 20th-century art.

Mir Museuma Bit Of History

The Fundació Miró was founded in 1975 as a consequence of the popularity of an exhibition of Mirós work in the Hospital Santa Creu in 1968. The architecture Josep Lluís Sert designed the building together with Miró.

The artist himself always wanted to show works by some of his contemporaries. As a result, the foundation has more than just Mirós work on site you can find other artists in their collection as well, resulting in a more fresh and unusual take.

The foundation is also known as the Center for the Study of Contemporary Arts .

An Exhibition Focuses On The Birth Of The World A 1925 Painting In Which The Artist Combined Painterly Spontaneity With A Calligraphic Deliberation

The Museum of Modern Art has dug into its extensive holdings of pieces by Joan Miró for a show that demonstrates how one major work can be a turning point in an artists career. For the Spanish artist, it was the appropriately titled The Birth of the World, a large-scale painting he made in 1925.

In 1920, Miró experienced what he called the transformative jolt of his first trip to Paris, where he was introduced to avant-garde society and began absorbing the influences of other emerging painters and writers. That led to his first show in Paris in 1921 at the Galerie La Licorne. Virtually no one came to it, Miró later recalled, and there were no sales, says Anne Umland, the curator who organised MoMAs exhibition, Joan Miró: Birth of the World. Deflated, the artist returned home to his native Catalonia and resolved to reinvent himself.

Critical to Mirós osmosis over the next four years were his encounters with Surrealist poets and painters on subsequent trips to Paris, including the movements co-founder André Breton. Absorbing their fascination with dreams, fantasy and the unconscious, he began churning out a new body of work. You and all my writer friends have given me much help and improved my understanding of many things, the artist wrote to the poet Michel Leiris in the summer of 1924 from his familys farm in the Catalan village of Montroig.

Joan Miró: Painting and Anti-Painting 19271937 is the first major museum exhibition to identify the core practices and strategies Miró used to attack and reinvigorate painting between 1927 and 1937, a transformative decade within his long career. Taking his notorious claimI want to assassinate paintingas its point of departure, the exhibition explores twelve of Mirós sustained series from this decade, beginning with a 1927 group of works on canvas that appears to be raw and concluding with 1937s singular, hallucinatory painting, Still Life with Old Shoe. Acidic color, grotesque disfigurement, purposeful stylistic heterogeneity, and the use of collage and readymade materials are among the aggressive tactics that Miró used in pursuit of his goal. By assembling in unprecedented depth the interrelated series of paintings, collages, objects, and drawings of this decade, this exhibition repeatedly poses the question of what painting meant to Miró and what he proposed as its opposite, and in the process reveals the artists paradoxical nature: an artist of violence and resistance who never ceased to be a painter, a creator of forms. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

The Museum of Modern Art, New York is presenting Joan Miró: Birth of the World, a survey of the first half of Mirós career. While most of the exhibition comes from MoMAs excellent Miró collection, it is augmented by several key loans, including the early The Table . Umland curated the presentation with assistance from Laura Braverman. It is on view through June 15.

On the second segment, Duke University professor Esther Gabara discusses her exhibition Pop América, 1965-75, which is on view at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University through July 21. The exhibition examines how Latin American and Latinx artists engaged with pop art alongside their American and European peers. The exhibition is accompanied by a terrific catalogue published by the Nasher and distributed by Duke University Press.
