Meleko Mokgosi: Acts Of Resistance
From May 2, 2018 November 11, 2018
Meleko Mokgosi produces large-scale figurative paintings that rethink the tradition of historical European compositions. He appropriates the polyptych formats and shapes of altarpieces and paintings used for the decoration of churches and other grand interiors and deploys paintings to present historical narratives and allegories. However, Mokgosis subjects come from African history, representing people and historical moments that do not appear within the canon of Western art history.

Chihuly at the de Young was an exploration of groundbreaking artwork. From the Mille Fiori, a 56-foot garden of glass, to the Saffron Tower, a 30-foot neon sculpture, this exhibition challenged convention with a feast of bold color, dramatic forms and extraordinary composition. It was the first major exhibition in San Francisco and included eleven galleries of new and archival works.
Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem
Jerusalem, IsraelAugust 1999November 2000
More than one million visitors saw Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000.The Jerusalem project started with lunch at my kitchen table with Izzika and Yaffa Gaon. They had visited Venice when I hung Chandeliers over the canals, and we all thought an installation project would be great for Israel. We discussed locations and the Citadel Tower of David Museum presented itself as an extraordinary location for such a project. When Izzika died shortly after, I flew to Jerusalem for his memorial service, and met Shosh Yaniv the museum director, and she gave me a tour of the Citadel. I was overwhelmed with the Citadel and Jerusalem, which I had visited once before in 1962. Shosh and I were determined to find a way to do this project in Izzika’s memory.Chihuly

The Baltimore Museum Of Art Invited Its Guards To Curate Their Latest Exhibition Heres How They Took On The Challenge

Guarding the Art features artworks from the BMAs collection selected by 17 members of its security team. It opens this weekend.
They spend more time looking at the museums walls than anybody elseand now, for the first time, theyre deciding what art will hang there.
For the Baltimore Museum of Arts newest exhibition, the security guards have taken on curatorial duties. The show, Guarding the Art, features 25 pieces from the BMAs collectionincluding works by Louise Bourgeois, Grace Hartigan, and Mickalene Thomasselected by 17 members of the institutions security team. It opens to the public this Sunday, March 27.
The aim of the show, conceived by BMA board member Amy Elias more than a year ago, is to enliven the museums presentationand invite some new perspectives along the way.
Guarding the Art, is more personal than typical museum shows, Elias said in a statement, since it gives visitors a unique opportunity to see, listen and learn the personal histories and motivations of guest curators. In this way, the exhibition opens a door for how a visitor might feel about the art, rather than just providing a framework for how to think about the art.

We were kind of nervous because these are serious folks and this is what they do, said Dominic Mallari, who has worked at the BMA since 2018. But it turned out that it was very welcoming and inviting.

BALTIMORE Museum guards have been a focal point of unionizing efforts and equity and safety conversations sweeping U.S. museums in the wake of Covid, Black Lives Matter protests and the recent stabbing at MoMA. Yet they have largely remained an anonymous group.
When youre a guard, youre on display like everything else, but youre kind of invisible to the public, said the artist Fred Wilson, who worked as a guard in the 1970s at the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, N.Y. Pushing for institutions to become more self-aware, he created a sculpture in 1991 called Guarded View, showing four Black headless mannequins wearing uniforms from different New York museums, and posed on a platform, that speaks to this paradox and its social and racial dynamics.
Now, in what may be the first show of its kind, guards at the Baltimore Museum of Art are stepping into the light as guest curators and individuals. It is part of a national reckoning by museums striving for diversity and inclusiveness and looking for original ways to bring in a range of voices to interpret the art.

Guarding The Art Was Created By Guest Curators From The Baltimore Museum Of Arts Security Department
A new art exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Art is giving a voice to individuals who have devoted years of their lives to protecting the art on display. “Guarding the Art” features 25 works from the museum’s greater collection, selected by 17 former and current members of the museums’ security team.
The exhibit, which will be on display from March 27 through July 10, gives guests the opportunity to see art through the eyes of the people who spend their days watching over it. The exhibit highlights the unique perspectives of the security officers and their reflections on the pieces based on their many hours spent in the galleries, their interactions with visitors, and their personal stories and interests.
The exhibit got its start last year when BMA trustee Amy Elias had a conversation with Dr. Asma Naeem, one of BMA’s chief curators, about how the museum’s security department probably spends more time with the museum’s art than anyone else.
“I went home at night, and I thought, well, wouldn’t it be interesting to hear from the guards about what pieces of work they find most meaningful?” Elias told CNN.
They also participated in designing the exhibit layout, producing catalogue content, and developing public programming and tours for the new exhibit. And like with any other museum curator, the “guest” curators were paid for their expertise.

Baltimore Museum Of Arts Great Migration Exhibit Opens Sunday
The Great Migration, a term used to describe the historic movement of roughlysix million Black people from the American South to far corners of the country, and world, shifted the history of the United States in innumerable ways.
Black people were hoping to flee Jim Crow laws of the South for more idyllic pastures and jobs to provide for their families. Some were successful, others were not. All were changed.
The legacy of that movement touched Jessica Bell Brown and Ryan Dennis, two curators who have put together a show at the Baltimore Museum of Art that hopes to illuminate the multifaceted legacy.
Attendees of the Baltimore Museum of Art’s premiere of the exhibition, “A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration,” view artist Mark Bradford’s work, “500,” on Oct. 26. The exhibition showcases artists whose work tells the personal stories and widespread impact of the Great Migration.
The North Baltimore museum opens the show, A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration, on Sunday. The show features 12 original commissioned works including sculptures, videos and other art with the theme of the Great Migration.
Ryan and I really wanted to focus on the long durée of the Great Migration and the fundamental impact it has had in our history and the way it shows up in the present moment, said Brown, department head of contemporary art at the BMA, at a Wednesday press opening for the show.
