Palo Verde Desert Museum

Desert Museum palo verde

Palo Verde Desert Museum is a medium-sized deciduous tree that makes a beautiful addition to any landscape, but which will look especially at home in a more xeric-style garden.

Desert Museum is a thornless cultivar of the native retama. It blooms longer, too, even attracting pollinators into fall.

The striking green bark and wispy leaves of this desert tree give the garden a stunning visual focal point, providing year-round beauty. It grows to about 15 20, lending light shade to plants below it.

Be sure to plant in an area with extremely good drainage, perhaps even elevating the roots on a berm if your soil has any significant clay content. Give it full sun and water sparingly, if at all, once established.

As with most desert trees, Desert Museum has an extreme branching habit and will need to be pruned regularly to keep it in shape. But unlike many other highly-branched desert trees, Desert Museum grows mostly upright and tends to stay single-trunked. Start analyzing the branch structure from the very beginning, and then continue to do so at least yearly, which will allow you to direct the trees growth properly and easily.

Palo Verde Quest Ends In Success

A few weeks ago we cut down a purple-leaf cherry plum tree in the front yard because it had gotten to be too messy. Initially I had considered replacing it with a blue jacaranda but after further research I decided against it: As beautiful as the blue jacaranda is, it, too, has a reputation for being messy, always dropping something.

I briefly considered a purple fernleaf acacia because of its sexy first-purple-then-silver leaves and its bright yellow flowers but some people say its branches become weak over time and break.

Finally it occurred to me that this spot would actually be ideal for one of my favorite trees of all: a palo verde . To me, the palo verde is the quintessential desert tree. Its green bark capable of photosynthesis and its tiny leaves optimized to prevent evaporation show how perfectly adapted it is to arid climates.

Looking For Desert Museum Palo Verde Seeds

Hi! I recently moved from Texas to South Florida and now have a job in a nursery working with mentally handicapped people. We mainly grow annuals but I’d love to get into perennials as a side project. We raise funds from plant sales and I was thinking an interesting plant like a Jerusalem thorn would be awesome.

However, I don’t think a thorny plant would be a very good idea for our mentally handicapped folks. The Desert Museum Palo Verde looks like it would be an awesome option and I think it would would be a very educational experience. The problem? I can’t find any seeds!

Would anyone happen to have any seeds I could purchase? I’d love to grow 20 or more but I’ll take what I can get. Thank you!
