Olympia By Douard Manet

Paris’s Musée d’Orsay, from a train station to a world-class museum

Painted in 1863 by Édouard Manet, Olympia shows a nude woman reclining on a bed, with a fully-dressed black servant attending to her.

It was shocking even when it was first displayed, although not for the dichotomy of the two figures, but for the straight-forward gaze of the nude woman.

This confrontational look came with the assumption that the woman was a courtesan, as only they would allow themselves to be painted that way. In addition, Olympia was a name associated with escorts in 1860s Paris.

More recently, it is the representation of the black woman that has been questioned, including why she has been painted almost disappearing into the background.

For context, the painting Olympia was created 15 years after slavery had finally been abolished in France and its empire, but negative stereotypes persisted.

The Balcony By Douard Manet

The Balcony by Édouard Manet depicts four figures on a balcony, one sitting, and the others standing. The painting was inspired by Majas on the Balcony by Francisco Goya.

The three people in the foreground were all friends of Manet, and yet seem to be disconnected from each other. The seated figure looks like a romantic and inaccessible heroine.

The two standing characters seem to display indifference. The boy in the background is not explicitly shown. For this painting, Manet adopted a restrained color palette, dominated by white, green, and black, with an accent of blue and red.

Franois Pompon Polar Bear 1923

Polar Bear is one of the Musée dOrsays most iconic works. Francois Pompon was once a valued assistant of both Claudel and Rodin.

Rodins expressionistic works inspired him to strike out on his own. Eschewing realism, Pompom created minimalistic animal-inspired works.

He sought to convey the very essence of the animal a sense of timelessness, permanence, and universality. To do this, Pompon used rounded forms, no geometric shapes, and pale stone materials. He provided a striking counterpoint to the Cubist deconstruction popular at the time.

Starry Night Over The Rhone

At the Musee d
Artist: Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most renowned Impressionist painters of all time. Starry Night was completed when he had moved to Arles in Southern France in 1888. Van Gogh had always admired the different colors of night and had written about how eager he was to paint it to his brother and sister. The painting shows the Rhône River which was only a few minutes away from his house that was rented at the time. It reflects the stars shining bright up in the sky among the building lights as a couple walks by this view.

Georges Seurat Circus 1890

Seurat was a pioneer of Neo-Impressionist painting, also called Divisionism or Pointillism. He considered himself a scientist.

He wasnt interested in the Impressionists obsession with capturing the fleeting moment. With intentional precision, his small dots of color converged to form a coherent whole.

In Circus, Seurat reveals his interest in spectacle and the night life of Paris. This painting was Seurats last. He died suddenly in 1891 at just 31 years old. It was left unfinished and sold to his friend Paul Signac.

The Age of Maturity

The 8 Historic Impressionist Exhibits 1874

They were rebellious artists who were rejected by the official state art exhibitions over and over again. Finally, they banded together to form their own group with their own art show. So, in 1874 a disparate group of friends and painters staged the first of eight Impressionist exhibitions held over the next twelve years.

It took time for the public,, collectors, and art dealers to warm up to their art but luckily for future art lovers the Impressionist painters persevered. Today, of course, there is a major Paris museum dedicated to their work. Let’s look back at the 8 historic Impressionist exhibitions and how to visit the Musée d’Orsay in a new way.

History Of The Muse Dorsay

In 1810, the Musée dOrsay began life as a magnificent government palace. In the 1890s, much of the palace was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and, in 1898, re-inaugurated as a train station.

In 1939, technology had surpassed it. So, once agin, the building needed to be repurposed. Initially, the French State was stumped over what to do with the edifice. It was a cavernous barrel vaulted tunnel, after all.

In the 1970s, the concept of a museum was floated. The Louvre was overflowing with art work, much of it in storage. The Louvre proposed to relocate its collection from the second half of the 19th century art to a dedicated new museum.

In 1981, Italian architect Gaetana Aulenti was hired to design and renovate the museum interior. The Musée dOrsay was founded in 1986. It was an immediate success.

Today, millions of entranced visitors flood the popular museum, which has since expanded beyond purely French art into Western art.

In March 2020, the Musée dOrsay received an anonymous 20 million donation through the nonprofit American Friends of the Musée dOrsay.

The Orsay plans a redesign, to be finished by 2026. It will convert fourth floor administrative offices into more gallery space to accommodate its growing collection.

The Bed By Henri De Toulouse

The Bed by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec depicts two women lying in bed gazing at one another with intimacy.

The white sheets of the bed contrast with the red bedspread, headboard, and wall behind. The women face each other, their bodies concealed beneath voluminous bedclothes.

The painting is suffused by a warm glow, perhaps the rosy light of the morning or the gas lamp.

Toulouse-Lautrec frequented brothels in Paris, and he admired the unguardedness of the women.

Dancers By Pierre Bonnard

Musée d

Dancers by Pierre Bonnard depicts a high-angle view on a ballet with a dream-like quality. The dancers fill the stage in lines, with each group executing a different dance step.

The focus, the colors, and the cloud-like quality of the ballerinas tulle give the impression that the figures are floating above the stage.

Rather than observe and reproduce the world around him, Bonnard sought to instill each picture with a beauty outside nature.

Bonnard also collaborated with the Russian and Swedish Ballet to design décors as well as a poster. Thus Bonnard may have had the opportunity to observe a ballet from a birds eye view.

James Whistler Whistlers Mother 1871

Beautiful Highlights of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris – An Online Guided Tour

James Whistler was an expat from the United States. He settled in England, struck up a friendship with Monet , and led a generally disreputable life. In this Musee dOrsay masterpiece, Whistler gives us a meticulous study of his mother, staring enigmatically into the distance. His preferred model was unavailable.

Whistlers Mother actually has a conceptual title, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1. On the surface, the painting appears traditional. Its sometimes dubbed the Victorian Mona Lisa. And its become an icon for that reason. But looks can be deceiving

Whistler actually had no interest in painting something motherly. Or even in portraiture. Rather, his work is characterized by the radical use of simple coloring.

In this painting, he explores the interplay of back and gray. Though Whistlers real life mother was a model of moral rectitude, perhaps in revenge, Whistler painted her with cumbersome peasant feet.

Vincent Van Gogh Self Portrait 1889

La verrière et la nef du musée d

Van Gogh painted over 43 self portraits. This one, one of his last, is a true masterpiece in the Orsay.

It was created at a time when Van Gogh was feeling healthier. He had just checked himself out of the St. Remy asylum and was headed north to Auvers-sur-Oise outside Paris.

The background is filled with waves and spirals. The painting has tense brushstrokes. The dominant colors are mint green and turquoise.

His features are gaunt and grizzled, framed in contrasting orange shades. Van Gogh himself is immobile, but everything else in the painting is like an undulating force field.
