We grouse about the selection, and its emphasis on money and art-world politics. We complain, but we all always go just the same. So the real question is: how does the Whitney Biennial 2012 stack up against recent editions of the museum’s signature show? We spent an afternoon at the close-to-home Upper East NYC Whitney Museum last week, just a few paces from The Fairmont, The Lucerne& The Marlowe. The answer, for us, no surprise given the wide range of work on display, is mixed.

This fall, the Whitney Museum of American Art is offering a glimpse into the NYC that renowned painter Edward Hopper portrayed in his works, such as Automat , Early Sunday Morning , Room in New York , New York Movie , Morning Sun and others.Edward Hoppers New York, which is on from October 19 to March 5, 2023, will showcase more than 200 paintings watercolors, prints, and drawings from the Whitneys collection as well as loans from public and private collections, and archival materials including printed ephemera, correspondence, photographs, and notebooks.These works will serve as a record of a changing city. For instance, the artists panoramic cityscapes will be shown together for the first time in a section called The Horizontal City. The Whitney Biennial Is An Upper East Side Nyc Art Tradition
The Whitney 2012 Biennial definitely has enough instantly engaging pieces to recommend a visit. Probably our favorite work in the whole show was the paintings and monotypes of Nicole Eisenman, two entire walls worth of portraits that may seem crude and almost childish at first glance, but quickly show a remarkable depth and range of emotions as well as being instantly identifiable representations of the way we live today. Dawn Kasper’s Nomadic Studio Practice Experiment hits our performance-art sweet spot, as the LA-based artist has taken over a third-floor alcove for the duration of the Whitney Biennial 2012. Kasper doesn’t sleep there , but she did move in a jam-packed studio’s- / living space’s-worth of stuff, and spends the entirety of the museum’s open hours creating art, moving things around, listening to music, putting up posters, chatting with museum-goers, etc.
Also not bad was Pipe Organ, Lutz Bacher’s punny sculpture that actually, overly-laboriously, bellows out dirges. Sam Lewitt’s floor installation Fluid Employment uses thick, black magnetic liquid , metal filings, speakers, and an array of fans to bizarre, somewhat disconcerting effect. And Concern, Crush, Desire, Nick Mauss’s, three-paneled vestibule and working doorway is a whimsically grandiose illustrative installation, especially when one of the Wtiney’s guards stands poised as bouncer / doorman.
Rarely Displayed Works Of Fine And Decorative Arts
At Frick Madison all fourteen paintings of Fragonards Progress of Love series will be displayed together for the first time in the Fricks history, including three panels that have been in storage much of the time since Mr. Frick purchased the set for his home in 1915. The series will be displayed to reflect its history, as it was created during two distinct campaigns, twenty years apart. The initial four canvases will be shown in a gallery adjacent to a room that displays the later ten canvases , a temporary arrangement that has never been possible in the Frick mansion. The installation will focus renewed attention on less familiar areas of the collection, including two seventeenth-century Mughal carpets, one of which is an especially rare and remarkable example. Removed from the mansions domestic setting and thereby freed of the reminder of their practical function, these carpets will be hung on the walls like paintings, a display in keeping with their status as works of art of the highest quality. In the same manner, the installation will feature display areas and rooms dedicated by medium to significant works of French furniture, Asian and European porcelain, Renaissance bronze figures, portrait medals, French enamels, and important European clocks. This mode of presentation will offer fresh insights into the breadth of decorative arts acquired by Henry Clay Frick and subsequent acquisitions made by the museums Trustees.

The 2012 Whitney Museum Biennial is on display through May 27. The Whitney Museum New York is close to Central Park on the Upper East Side between 75th and 74th Streets. The Whitney Biennial 2012 has put a premium on performance art, and there’s a lengthy calender of events available on the museum’s website, and that’s great, but here’s the thing: if you go at a random time , and there’s not really anything going on , then virtually an entire floor of the exhibition is, essentially, empty. World War I And Its Aftermath
During , Gertrude Whitney dedicated a great deal of her time and money to various relief efforts, establishing and maintaining a fully operational hospital for wounded soldiers in , about 35 kilometres northwest of Paris in France.
While at this hospital, Gertrude Whitney made drawings of the soldiers which became plans for her memorials in New York City. Her work prior to the war had a much less realistic style, which she strayed away from to give the work a more serious feeling. In 1915, her brother perished in the sinking of the .
She completed a series of smaller pieces realistically depicting soldiers in wartime, but her smaller works were not seen as particularly significant during her lifetime. Since her death critics have recognized the expert craftsmanship of her smaller works.
