The Craft And Folk Art Museum

Trick Art Museum

TripSavvy / Amanda Blackard

The Craft and Folk Art Museum, on Museum Row across from LACMA, takes a broad view of folk art as “all art made in a cultural and social context.” So don’t expect to be limited to African wood carvings and Hmong needlework, although they are part of the collection. Exhibits might feature furniture, textiles, musical instruments, tattoo art or any manner of human creation.

Santa Monica Museum Of Art

Kayte Deioma

Santa Monica Museum of Art is a small museum located inside the Bergamot Station art complex. Although the Santa Monica Museum of Art does host interesting and thought-provoking temporary exhibits, one of the best things about it for art lovers is that it is surrounded by a dozen art galleries, where you can view for free and purchase the work of established and emerging artists.

The Museum Of Contemporary Art Los Angeles

TripSavvy / Amanda Blackard

The Museum of Contemporary Art and its partner, the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, a few blocks apart in Downtown LA, are hard to rank because there aren’t really any permanent exhibits. So where they should fall on a “best of” list depends on the current exhibition. Check the exhibition schedule before planning a visit.

Orange County Museum of Art

The Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach is a small modern and contemporary art museum with a collection that focuses heavily on California artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. This is a great little museum for discovering up and coming artists. OCMA’s California Biennial exhibits feature innovative contemporary artists of California. There is no permanent exhibit.

Long Beach Museum Of Art

The Long Beach Museum of Art makes the list above the Santa Monica Museum of Art and Orange County Museum of Art because they have items from their permanent collection on exhibit as well as having some high-quality temporary exhibits, and because they have by far the best view of the three. The Long Beach Museum of Art is perched on the bluff above the beach in Long Beach.

Didnt Work And Wasted 2 Hours

We downloaded the app when we arrived at the LA 3-D art trick museum. We were taking pictures and creating videos using the app and after we left we realized it had not retained either pictures or videos on our iPhone. When we called the LA museum manager they mentioned that the software doesnt keep a backup of any pics or videos. We were also told that immediately after download the app requests permission to download to the iPhone, we never saw such a message. We did notice a download message after a video. And we thought things were going well. Unfortunately nothing was saved on her iPhone and now we cannot retrieve any files because there is no back up. Looking at the software settings there is no way to inform the app to download to your iPhone camera roll.

Getting There

The museum is a part of the Third St Promenade in Santa Monica. This is a collection of shops and restaurants that you can walk along. There are many parking structures all around the area where you can park and walk to the museum.

Video

Here is a video I made of my time at the museum.

The Museum

Upon entering, you will be shown a QR code that allows you to download the museum app. From there, you can explore the different art pieces and wake the paint.

The way the museum operates is changing because of the pandemic, so I am not sure how the lines and such will work when they open to the public, but I imagine there will be lines for some of the most popular pieces.

Some of my favorite ones were the dragon, the tree climb, and the King Kong painting.

Los Angeles County Museum Of Art

Art museums 1 and 2 on this list are almost a tie if you take into account architecture and the view, but for the sheer volume and diversity of art that you can see at one location, Los Angeles County Museum of Art edged out the Getty Center, especially with the addition of Broad Contemporary and the Resnick Pavilion. The encyclopedic collection ranges from pre-history to contemporary art.

The Getty Center, high on a hill in Brentwood, houses the J. Paul Getty Museum‘s fine art and photography collections, while the antiquities reside in Malibu at the Getty Villa. The Getty Center is as popular for its unique architecture, beautiful gardens, and stunning views as it is for the breadth of its art collection.

At This Made For Social Media Museum The Pictures Come To Life

The Trick Art Museum Is Like Photoshop Without A Computer

Ever think you could battle a fire breathing dragon, go surfing and stand on the ledge of tall building, all in one day?

Follow Rich DeMuro on for more tech news, tips and tricks.

You could if youre visiting the 3D AR Trick Art Museum in Santa Monica on the Third Street Promenade. Its one of the worlds first of its kind, filled with over 40 different hand painted murals.

Depending on the angle you stand with your phone, it creates this 3-dimensional aspect that makes the picture look real nice and pop out, explained Andrew Esparza, marketing manager with the museum.

But the really unique part is how the pictures come to life thanks to augmented reality and an app.

The augmented reality aspect allows a normal person to experience CGI, like in the movies, said Esparza.

Pose using your best acting skills and youll walk away with unique pictures and videos that put you in a variety of scenes.

You can stand in the commanding grip of King Kong, ride a barrel down a waterfall, stand on the ledge of a tall building overlooking the Las Vegas skyline, fend off a fire breathing dragon, hop over a floor filled with lava and much more.

Ill admit, I was a bit skeptical of the entire thing since I thought Instagram museums were a bit contrived, but this works thanks to the augmented reality. Even the standard 3D pictures are amazingly realistic when taken from the right angle.

Tickets for the museum are $25 but there are discounts available so be sure to check for them.

The Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City is a relatively small space, but you could spend many hours perusing photo exhibits. Although fine art photography is not the focus of the Annenberg Space, and you might equally well find stunning landscapes or grisly images of war and famine, the art of photography is definitely in evidence.

Usc Fisher Museum Of Art

The USC Fisher Museum of Art owns some really cool stuff, including Armand Hammer’s earlier collection of Dutch, Flemish, German and Italian master that he donated to USC before starting a whole other collection that he then gave to UCLA. However, the chances of seeing many of the Fisher’s masterpieces are slim, since there are more exhibits of outside work than of the museum’s own collection. Other temporary exhibits may or may not be of interest to the general public. The Gallery is only open from September through May during USC’s school year.
