Open Sourcing: Making Source Codes Available For Developers

MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition Opens at The Tech Museum of Innovation

The Digital and Emerging Media department creates codes for the museums internal use, serving a wide range of technical services from the museum website and the collections management software to the interactive displays. This research reveals that Cooper Hewitt Lab makes some of its source codes available on GitHub for developers to add and improve. GitHub is a platform for sharing, building, and managing open source codes. Aaron Cope , then head of Engineering at Cooper Hewitt Lab, considers the open source movement a way of giving back to the community and the sector: The other big change, and this has been in almost all industries, has been open source. Advocating for and supporting and suddenly it is a culture of giving back. We go out of our way, as much as possible, to give source code back to the community.

A lot of the projects I worked on at the Indianapolis Museum of Art we open sourced. Anybody could download them for free. Open sourcing code is not just writing it, throwing it up on GitHub, and you are done. It is talking to people helping them through setting it up, installing it maintaining the product. Through that process other people are contributing back.

In conclusion, we were able to discuss a two-way open innovation path at Cooper Hewitt Lab. This path represents inbound and outbound activities, which can be summarized as followed:

Case Study : The Role Of Digital In The Social Enterprise Business Model At The Imperial War Museums

IWM is a cluster of museums and historical sites consisting of five museums : IWM London IWM North in Trafford, Greater Manchester IWM Duxford near Cambridge the Churchill War Rooms in Whitehall, London and the historic ship HMS Belfast, moored in the Pool of London on the River Thames. The Imperial War Museums are among the pioneering and perhaps the earliest museums in the United Kingdom to use a social enterprise business model to build financial resilience. As early as 1999, IWM established its commercial division, IWM Trading Company Ltd., which is ultimately responsible for running and managing the commercial activities of IWM. The museum states on its website:

The majority of the funding for our core activities is raised by means of charitable giving, philanthropic support, sponsorship and donations, admission charges and IWMs commercial activities. These commercial activities are conducted through the IWM Trading Company Ltd., and include retail, corporate hospitality, public catering, air shows, private tours, pleasure flying, publishing, licensing of the collections.

Reflections From the Fence: THE Trip, THE Encore

Brief: The man-made creation and alteration of lifeforms is a complex topic. We broke it down for visitors to the Tech Museum, demystifying one of the least-understood and most controversial topics in modern science. Because the permanent exhibition will last for a decade, we knew we couldn’t focus on current examples of innovation in synthetic biology- those would soon be outdated. Instead, we focused on the basics, letting visitors manipulate DNA, create actual new lifeforms, and create camouflage.Exhibition Type & Location: Permanent Exhibition at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA. We are presenting the whole exhibition. Solution & Unique Features: Visitors can change the color of real bacteria using vials of loose DNA. An augmented reality tutorial guides visitors through the process, explaining whats happening at a microscopic level. Visitors can also design new camouflage patterns on life-size animal sculptures, and create their own virtual lifeforms by snapping flexible building blocks that represent DNA segments.

Building A Collection: History Of The Canada Aviation And Space Museum

The Canada Aviation and Space Museum first opened in 1960 at Uplands Airport in Ottawa. At that time, it presented only one of the three major aeronautical collections held by the Canadian government:

  • The National Aviation Museum collection focused on bush flying and early aircraft manufacturers in Canada.
  • The Canadian War Museums collection concentrated on military aircraft from the First World War to the 1950s.
  • The Royal Canadian Air Force collection emphasized military aircraft related to RCAF history.
  • In 1964, these three collections were combined into the National Aeronautical Collection. The amalgamated collection was housed in Second World War era hangars at Ottawas historic Rockcliffe Airport. This arrangement gave visitors a better perspective on the development and use of aircraft in Canada over the years. It proved to be tremendously popular.

The Museum joined with the National Museum of Science and Technology in 1967. The National Aeronautical Collection continued to acquire both military and civil aircraft important to Canadian and world aviation history. The collection was officially renamed the National Aviation Museum in 1982.

In 2005, the Museum building was supplemented by the Reserve Hangar. In 2010, when the Museums mandate grew to include aerospace technology, its name was officially changed to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.

The Tech Museum Of Innovation Announces New Vision And Name: The Tech Interactive

Beloved San Jose institution creates bold plan for taking its proven STEM education programs worldwide and deepening local impact

San Jose, CA, May 23, 2019 Twenty years after opening its doors, The Tech Museum of Innovation today announced a new name and a new focus for its future. The cultural institution is now The Tech Interactive, a nod to its hands-on nature and in-depth STEM educational experiences. The institution also announced a new 20-year vision: to develop problem-solvers locally, nationally and globally, with the ambitious goal of reaching 100 million people a year by 2039.

Our new name is a reflection of who we are and the experiences weve become known for, said Tim Ritchie, president and CEO. The Tech Interactive has long been a place where people learn by doing, and now we have a name that says that to the world.

At an event at The Tech Interactive today, Ritchie explained the institutions decision to expand programming beyond its iconic building in downtown San Jose:

In the past several years, people and organizations from around the nation and around the world have approached us to ask for help using our brand of educational pedagogy, and we came to understand that what we have to offer is valuable beyond Silicon Valley, Ritchie said.

To reach the goals unveiled today, The Tech will pursue a multitude of strategies to widen and deepen its impact, including:

    Applications Of The Mim

This discussion has demonstrated the potential universality of the concepts on which MIM is based. This leads me now to project how the model might be flexible enough to be applied in museums with different sizes, management structures, geographical locations, and collections in custody. At this stage, there are no studies that can show how the application of the model in art museums, for example, can differ from history or science museums. Similarly, there are no studies that make a connection, if any, between the application of the MIM and the size of the museum. However, numerous examples in the museum sector suggest that MIM can be equally valuable for different types of museums.

Additionally, starting in 2007, MEAL worked with HM Prison Hollesley Bay, a local prison in Suffolk. Butler explains his project:

We would take people from a local prison who would work with us as part of their setting programs, spend six month with us, on day release, gaining these skills in construction, land management, work with animals that they then use when they are released.

It will be good for everyone and help the socially disadvantaged. It will help us provide additional services for the public, nice gardens, flowers, hanging baskets, and we will be very, very strict about who we take on from the prisons.
