South Bend Museum Of Art Celebrates 75 Years With Special Family Day

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The South Bend Museum of Art celebrated 75 years with a special Family Day: A Carnival For All Ages.

The events purpose was to showcase the museum while engaging with the community.

For free, families were invited to enjoy carnival games, participate in scavenger hunt, and see live demonstrations, as well as contribute to a community mural.

Families could win fun prizes, including South Bend Cubs tickets, see secret rooms in the museum, and more.

This is the first time were actually opening up most of our museum to the public. So, we have a scavenger hunt, and you can explore all of the different galleries, and see what we have to offer, and youll be going upstairs to all of our secret little studios and see what we do up there, so yeah, were very excited, said Valerie Jairosi, the museums Communications and Marketing Manager.

The South Bend Museum of Art is located in Century Center in downtown South Bend. The museum was opened to the public in March 1996, and features a variety of artists from South Bend and the Michiana region. Currently, over 850 works are featured in the permanent collection. The museum also offers several classes and workshops for adults and children.

The History Museum

The History Museum is the public name of the Northern Indiana Historical Society, the second-oldest historical society in Indiana, established in 1867 to collect and interpret the history of the northern Indiana region by St. Joseph County’s leading citizens. The Oliver Mansion is one of the central features of the museum. The 38-room mansion was built in 1895 and is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The home was built by Joseph Doty Oliver, son of James Oliver, the founder of the Oliver Farm Equipment Company, once the largest plow manufacturer in the United States. In addition to the Oliver Mansion and the Workers Home , the museum includes areas dedicated to the history of the St. Joseph River Valley, the University of Notre Dame, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and the Kidsfirst Children’s Museum.

The South Bend Museum of Art is located in South Bend, Indiana. Founded in 1947, the museum features historical and contemporary art in five galleries, and offers instruction in its studios. Since 1987, the museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest level of professional standards. Located inside Century Center in downtown South Bend, the museum occupies three levels in the northern wing of the building, designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee.

The museum’s permanent collection is exhibited in the Carmichael Gallery and includes a mix of styles and imagery by American artists from the 19th Century to present day: historical paintings by the Hoosier Group of Impressionists as well as works by living Midwestern artists.

The museum galleries are infused with new work regularly. National traveling shows and thematic exhibitions fill the Warner Gallery the Art League Gallery displays solo and group exhibitions by professional artists living and working in the Midwest the Jerome J. Crowley Community Gallery exhibits local artist groups or student and faculty work.

South Bend Roller Girls

The city also hosts the South Bend Roller Girls, the city’s non-profit flat-track roller derby league. Founded in March 2010, the league has worked to support fundraising for local charities, such as the Salvation Army’s Adopt-A-Family program, the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and the St. Joe County Humane Society. The South Bend Roller Girls traveling/competitive team, The Studebreakers, is named after the historic Studebaker Corporation. The team is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.

Establishment And Early History

South Bend was incorporated as a city on May 22, 1865, and its first elections were held on June 5, 1865, with William G. George elected as its first mayor The official city motto, “Peace”, refers to the fact that incorporation came in the month following the Confederate surrender that effectively ended the American Civil War.

Olivet African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in South Bend in March 1870, making it the first African American church in the city. Olivet AME is still an active African Methodist Episcopal Church, and celebrated its 145th anniversary in 2015.

A sergeant from South Bend fired the first American shells against Germany in World War I.

History with Ku Klux Klan

In 1923, the African American owner of a soda fountain received a letter signed “KKK”, threatening to kill an African American man held in the city’s jail and harm the rest of the city’s African American population. Within a few days, over a thousand African Americans fled the city.
