Sharks And A Sunken Ship

Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium Tour | Bass Pro Shop in Springfield, Missouri

The WOW aquarium brings live fresh and saltwater fish from around the world tarpon, jacks, barracudas, piranhas, giant Maori wrasse, sharks and stingrays to the heart of the Midwest.

There are about 34,000 fish, crabs and other aquatic life at WOW, and about 1,000 other animals, like emerald tree boas, river otters, alligators and brightly colored poison dart frogs.

All represent habitats and ecosystems from around the world.

At the aquarium, visitors can touch slippery rays, small sharks, starfish and prehistoric-looking horseshoe crabs in two hands-on contact aquariums.

An entire room is devoted to jellyfish. Blue blubbers, spotted jellies and moon jellies pulse in slow-moving currents behind glass walls.

The shipwreck room re-creates the ocean ecosystem that grew around a decommissioned 237-foot cargo ship that Morris sank off the coast of Florida in 1996 to create an artificial reef.

Sharp-toothed moray eels as long as a man’s arm hide in shipwreck pipes, while dozens of colorful reef fish swim around ships’ masts inside a two-story-tall cylindrical aquarium, the centerpiece of the room.

A show-stopper likely will be the huge shark tank, where several species of sharks share space with several giant Goliath groupers caught by Morris himself.

“I got to go with my buddy Bill Dance,” Morris recalls. “We caught four of them. We got permits from Florida Fish and Wildlife, and one is about 400 pounds, two are about 300 pounds and another is about 200. They’re big fish.”

Visitors must pay to visit the wildlife halls, the aquarium or both. And if you can imagine a wildlife attraction created by a billionaire outdoorsman and conservationist, this is it.

The price of admission sends you walking on 1 ½ miles of trails through 340,000 square feet of gallery space bigger than six football fields. About 35,000 live fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds representing more than 800 species live in the aquarium, which includes 1.5 million gallons of freshwater and saltwater tanks. The wildlife halls are full of hundreds of mounted animals the museum wouldnt supply an exact number but did say they were obtained from private collections, died from natural causes, are re-creations or were acquired legally.

The longer you look, the more you notice from the beetle resting on the nose of a type of buffalo known as the Black Death in the Great African Hall to the skinny garden eels poking out of the sand and waving like thick blades of grass in the Shipwreck Reef exhibit.

More than 2,000 craftspeople had their hands in the creation of the facility. Grant Woods, a wildlife biologist who contracts with Bass Pro, gave tours during a media preview of the African hall. The effort to get it biologically correct, and to put it together in a way that is natural is so impressive to me, he said, pointing out the fruit bats and weaver birds nests hanging from the trees.

Originally the state’s western border was a straight line, defined as the meridian passing through the Kawsmouth, the point where the enters the Missouri River. The river has moved since this designation. This line is known as the Osage Boundary. In 1836 the was added to the northwest corner of the state after purchase of the land from the native tribes, making the Missouri River the border north of the Kansas River. This addition increased the land area of what was already the largest state in the Union at the time to Virginia’s 65,000 square miles, which then included West Virginia).

In the early 1830s, migrants from northern states and Canada began settling near and areas just north of there. Conflicts over religion and slavery arose between the ‘old settlers’ and the Mormons . Conflicts over slavery exacerbated border tensions among the states and territories. From 1838 to 1839, a border dispute with over the so-called resulted in both states’ calling-up of along the border.

A $290 Million Investment

He and Morris both said the local investment in the WOW campus is comparable to the cost of building the Georgia Aquarium.

That huge facility was built with a $250 million donation from Bernard Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot. About $40 million in corporate contributions brought the Georgia Aquarium’s total cost to about $290 million.

“We feel it’s very comparable to what Bernie Marcus did,” Schafer said. “What John has done here is world class. It’s top notch. We are blessed to have such an institution here in Springfield.”

WOW’s grand opening comes at another major financial junction for Bass Pro Shops. The company has been working to buy a major competitor, Cabela’s. According to Securities and Exchange Commission filings, that deal could close as soon as Thursday, the same day Morris opens the WOW museum and aquarium.

Why Did We Choose To Go To The Bass Pro Aquarium& Wonders Of Wildlife Museum

Ben Nicholson

My husband Jason had been wanting to visit the Bass Pro aquarium & Wonders of wildlife national museum and Bass pro Aquarium in Springfield Mo, since they broke ground October 4, 1999. So knowing this I agreed to go and so we purchased the tickets. That is a long time to wait for something to be completed and both of us were at least a bit curious, to see what had taken them nearly 20 years to complete.

Conservation Messages Throughout Wow

For decades, Morris has been an advocate for conservation and has enlisted the support of many state and federal and private wildlife-oriented agencies and organizations. He also has partnered with National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, which provide some of the theater experiences visitors can see.

There’s a key message Morris hopes the WOW museum will convey: When anyone buys outdoor gear, like fishing poles, firearms, boats or ammunition, they pay a federal tax that helps support conservation efforts.

“That amount of money today virtually funds all state wildlife agencies or state departments of conservation,” Morris said.

“Woven through all of this is the story of conservation, and the role hunters and anglers have played in conservation.”
