  • Book Your Tickets Online Rather Than Risk A Walk In Queue

Book your tickets online rather than risk a walk in queue, especially on a peak holiday time. And do come with a full tummy! Because for art enthusiasts, it’s gonna be at least 3 hours of getting lost inside. I spent 4 hours there and it was not enough. Ideally i would spend 5-6 hours there. Definitely the most epic and diverse collection for a museum I’ve ever visited.

    The Pearls Of The Museum

Luxury Hotel in New York City

The Arms and Armor department is particularly popular among visitors of the New York museum. This gallery covers much more geographical areas than the other departments. Here you can observe armors and weapons from Oceania, Egypt, Ancient Rome and Greece, Africa, South and North America, and the Middle East.

In the late 30s of the last century, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was enlarged with the Costume Institute Collection, becoming its separate exhibition gallery. Today this collection has more than 80 thousand accessories and dresses. Unfortunately, the department does not have a permanent exposition due to the delicacy of the exhibits. However, the special thematic shows are held here two times a year, during which the costumes of various epochs are demonstrated. The last shows were dedicated to the works of such great artists as Versace and Chanel, the showings were very successful.

Libraries are among the main treasures of the museum, and one of the major of them is named after Thomas J. Watson. However, many departments have their own libraries, which reflect their themes. In the department of Modern and Contemporary Art, visitors can observe 10 thousand paintings by masters of America and Europe. The pearls of the collection are the works of Picasso, Max Beckmann, J. Johns and Paul Klee.

The Fortune Teller By Georges De La Tour

This notable painting by French Baroque artist Georges de la Tour caught our eye.

It shows a wealthy young man getting robbed by three thieves, as an old gypsy woman tells his fortune.

Its probably celebrated in part because of the paintings mysterious discovery some 80 years ago.

The story goes that a French prisoner-of-war, who was reminded of an old painting at his uncles castle, had a priest examine the painting after the war. It was confirmed to be a genuine La Tour.

An art dealer then bought the painting in 1949 the Met acquired it in 1960.

Regarding Places To Eat Near Metropolitan Museum Of Art

I am looking for some “regular” food. I am coordinating a trip of about 52 people and we are taking a tour of the museum. I need a place that’s not too expensive for us to eat after the tour.

Oh, boy. Regular food? You means stuff that moves your bowels?

    Edited: 10 years ago

Unfortunately, that is not the neighborhood for that. The Museum sits in Central Park, directly across Fifth Avenue from one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the United States. Since the people who live in apartments that cost $10 million or $15 million obviously have money to spend, and businesses in the area are priced accordingly, and since both Fifth itself and the street blocks that run off it are almost entirely residential, as is Park Avenue, and so with very few places to eat anywhere west of Lexington Avenue, you are not going to find anything like Wanda’s All-You-Can-Eat Buffet that can suddenly handle a crowd of 52 people who want a budget meal. I would suggest either eating in the cafeteria of the museum itself , or else plan on going as a group somewhere a little further afield than near the Musuem where a group your size can be accommodated and that won’t break the bank.

    Edited: 10 years ago

My first thought would be to ask the Met…they are doing the tour, maybe they will cordon off part of their cafeteria for you.

Thank you. That was a big help. I’ll look for something in another area.

vjp – Now, that was funny!!

Is a service that would deliver.
