Nc Museum Of Art Back To Full Capacity Hosting Golden Mummies Exhibit

Artist Talk: Scott Avett with curator Linda Dougherty

RALEIGH, N.C. Like most, the Heigh family is more than ready for a break. The North Carolina Museum of Art has provided just that for many in the area.

With home schooling and quarantine and all the stuff that has been going on in the last year, this has been one of the bright spots said Barry Heigh.

The bright spot is that the North Carolina Museum of Art is now at 100 percent capacity. Its current biggest draw is the exhibition of the Golden Mummies of Egypt.

Its amazing that our museum here in Raleigh is able to get these wonderful exhibits, said Megan Liles, who spent Wednesday visiting the museum.

The exhibit focuses on a mostly overlooked time period when Egypt was also occupied by Greeks and Romans. The elite lie mummified, but alive with their own individual stories.

It really is a global story, as well as an Egyptian story. It talks about life and death in children and adults. Its looking into the faces of the past, so when we were talking about traveling last time, were time traveling in this show in a really exciting way, said museum director Valerie Hillings.

The main galleries are also open, including pieces that were rediscovered in storage when all was shut down due to the pandemic. People visiting need to adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines, with extra measures taken for the exhibit.

Megan Liles said its enough to make her feel safe when being inside other places can still be a bit nerve wracking.

Blue Ridge Road And The Stone Building

In 1967, the present-day Blue Ridge Road site was chosen as the location for a new building, as the museum had outgrown the Morgan Street location. Designed by Edward Durrell Stone and Associates of New York and Holloway-Reeves Architects of North Carolina, the new building opened in 1983. Stone used spatial experimentation with pure geometric form for the museum by using a square as a basic unit and designing the entire site by manipulating the square form. This was Stone’s last major design prior to his death. After he died in 1978, the exterior was changed from white marble to red brick.

British Spanish And French Post1600

History Of The Museum

In 1947 the state legislature appropriated $1 million to purchase a collection of art for the people of North Carolina. The appropriation, which was unheard of at the time and drew national attention, was in response to a then-anonymous challenge grant from noted philanthropist Samuel H. Kress of New York through the persuasive efforts of Robert Lee Humber. Humber was an international lawyer and native of Greenville, N.C.

Humber worked tirelessly with the legislature to ensure the bills passage. An amended bill was finally passed in the waning hours of the last day of the legislative session. Rep. John Kerr of Warren County, in support of the bill, famously said, Mr. Speaker, I know I am facing a hostile audience, but man cannot live by bread alone.

The initial $1 million legislative appropriation was used to purchase 139 European and American paintings and sculptures.

The Kress Foundation matched the $1 million appropriation with a gift of 70 works of art, primarily Italian Renaissance, adding the Museum to its program of endowing regional museums throughout the United States with works from the Kress Collection. The Kress gift to the Museum became the largest and most important of any except that given to the National Gallery of Art. The Museums original collection, along with the Kress gift, established the North Carolina Museum of Art as one of the premier art museums.
