The International Museum of World War II was a not-for-profit museum devoted to World War II located in Natick, Massachusetts, a few miles west of Boston. It was formed over a period of more than 50 years by its founder, Kenneth W. Rendell, one of the world’s premier dealers in autographs, letters and manuscripts, who has earned international renown as an authenticator of historic artifacts. The museum’s collections documented the events of the war, from the signing of the Treaty of Versailles ending World War I to the Nuremberg and Tokyo war crimes trials. The museum’s goal was to preserve the reality of the history of World War II and to provide an educational experience of the lessons to be learned. In 2016, the Museum of World War II became The International Museum of World War II to reflect its being the only museum in the world with an international collection of letters, documents, and artifacts.
On September 1, 2019, the museum closed without prior notice. Much of the museum’s collection had been sold to billionaire Ronald Lauder the agreement to keep the museum open while a new home was found was terminated by Lauder.
The museum has been praised for the scope of exhibits in its collection. Rendell has said that “if a visitor is overwhelmed with the enormity and the complexity of the war, I have achieved my goal.”

Band Of Brothers 20th Anniversary Symposium
The National WWII Museum is honored to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Band of Brothers miniseries premiere by hosting a daylong Symposium in New Orleans on Saturday, August 13, 2022*. The Symposium will bring members from the cast and crew together on stage to reflect on their experiences, share unique insights, and provide behind-the-scenes commentary. Family members of Easy Company veterans will also participate in a session on the lasting legacy of their loved ones.
Perhaps no single work, in the past two decades, has had such an impact, or made such an imprint on the American memory of World War II.

Opened to the public in 2012, the National Museum of World War II Aviation documents the role that military aviation played in the emergence of our nation as a world power. The museum tells the story of the tremendous technological advancements in aviation during the War and the contributions and sacrifices of the men and who won the air war.
The Museum In The News
The Museum received a $100,000 grant from Cummings Foundation to develop our education program. The program will include hands-on field experiences for students, professional development workshops for teachers, and utilize technology to enhance interaction with the Museums authentic artifacts. Developing the program will be Marshall W. Carter who joins the Museum in the fall as its first Director of Education.
We are honored to be selected by Cummings Foundation for this notable grant, said Kenneth W. Rendell, Founder and Executive Director of the Museum of World War II. One of our primary goals through the Museum is to influence how World War II history is taught in schools, and to bring a deeper and truer understanding of the reality of war to students and teachers alike. This grant will enable us to use original documents and artifacts from World War II to educate schools in a more meaningful and authentic way.

World War Ii Home Front Museum
Discover Coastal Georgias extraordinary contributions to winning World War II.
Test your skills as a plane spotter watching the skies for enemy aircraft. Train to direct fighter pilots like the officers at Naval Air Station St. Simons. Build a Liberty ship to transport critical supplies to troops overseas. Experience all this and more in the immersive galleries and interactives at the World War II Home Front Museum.
On select Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, volunteer Storytellers are at the World War II Home Front Museum sharing their memories of serving abroad and on the Home Front during World War II. Museum visitors will hear personal accounts of the war years including working on Liberty ships, serving stateside in Navy hospitals, and scrapping for the war effort. Come visit the Museum and talk with these incredible individuals. To learn when Storytellers are tentatively scheduled, please call 634-7098. Schedule A Group Visit
Private group visits of 40 or more are eligible for a reduced rate of $14 per person for a self-guided tour. Group visits can be scheduled as a guided tour for an additional charge of $5 per person. On the guided tour, the museums docents will take your group through the story of World War II Aviation and an exclusive behind the ropes tour of the WestPac restoration facility.
All guided group tours start promptly at the pre-arranged time. The guided portion of the tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Visitors are welcome to continue exploring the museum on their own once the guided tour is over.
A Pivotal Local Connection
The Higgins boat in the atrium gives a clue to the museum’s origin and location. During World War II, the Navy needed a shallow-draft landing vessel to bring soldiers ashore for combat. New Orleans-based Andrew Higgins had been building similar boats to navigate Louisiana’s shallow bayous, and modified his design for battle. By war’s end, Higgins local factories produced more than 20,000 of the essential landing craft, inspiring Dwight Eisenhower to declare him, the man who won World War II for us. The museum’s Bayou to Battlefield exhibit details Higgins important contribution to the war effort.
University of New Orleans professor and author Stephen Ambrose’s 1995 book on D-Day inspired him to found the National D-Day Museum, which opened in New Orleans in 2000 with a single building. Since then, the museum’s mission has expanded to encompass all of the war, with Congress officially designating it as the National WWII Museum in 2004. The campus continues to expand as well, with a sixth building, the Liberation Pavilion , currently under construction.

Relation To New Orleans
The museum closed for three months after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans on August 29, 2005, re-opening on December 3 of that year. A museum banner promoted the re-opening by proclaiming “We Have Returned,” a phrase made famous by General Douglas MacArthur regarding his eventual return to the Philippines in 1944.
As of 2015, the museum is in the midst of a $400 million capital expansion campaign called The Road to Victory: A Vision for Future Generations. The expansion has resulted in significant increases in attendance. The Solomon Victory Theater, Stage Door Canteen, and American Sector restaurant opened in November 2009. The John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion opened in June 2011. The US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center opened to the public in 2013, followed by the opening of the first phase of the Campaigns of Courage pavilion in 2014. The second phase of the Campaigns of Courage Pavilion, Road to Tokyo, opened in 2015. The final project in the expansion will be the Liberation Pavilion. Initially, the intended date of completion of the expansion project was 2015, but ground has not yet been broken on the final pavilion.
Visitation at the museum continues to grow, with 406,251 in 2010 having grown to nearly 700,000 in fiscal year 2016.

While US strategy in 1941 was largely focused on the war in Europe, the bold carrier raid seized the initiative against increasing US pressure over Japans ongoing war in China. Captain Rick Jacobs will discuss the events of that terrible, heroic dayfrom the opening of Japan by Commodore Mathew Perry in the 1850s through the devastation at Pearl Harbor on December 7.

Pearl Harbor 80th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony
Early on December 7, 1941, citizens and servicemembers alike in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, faced terror as Japanese planes rained fire on the island in a stunning surprise attack. The assault quickly plunged the United States into a world-changing war. Each year, The National WWII Museum commemorates those who lost their lives on that fateful December day.
