Tips For Visiting The Sixth Floor Museum

The Sixth Floor Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10AM-5PM.

Admission is $18/adult and $14/youth , children 5 and under are free.

Plan to spend about an hour in the main part of the museum. And in the immediate area, youll want to see Dealey Plaza and the Grassy Knoll as well as the John F Kennedy Memorial. It wont take much time, but there are a few plaques to read in different places.

The museum is within walking distance of most of the downtown hotels. I stayed at the Adolphus on this trip, but you could walk from the Joule, Statler, etc. However I will say that walking through central downtown you should be aware of your surroundings. Theres a bus depot in the area and some streets may be better to walk down than others. Overall, its fine in the daytime, but I wouldnt want to be walking back after dark.

The Sixth Floor Museum

Its eerily ironic that something as mundane as a school book depository became synonymous with a sensational act that shocked the world. It was from a sixth-floor window in this red-brick building that President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in 1963. Now a museum, it presents the life and death of an American icon in an absorbing exhibition of photos and artefacts.

    What I Thought

I think the Sixth Floor Museum is a DO NOT MISS in Dallas. In a city that often seems a bit lacking in the history and culture department, this is a standout. Not to belittle their significance, but most major cities have great art and natural history museums these days, but the Sixth Floor Museum is completely unique to Dallas.

The events that took place in Dallas on November 22, 1963 had worldwide significance and this micro focused museum gives real insight into not just what happened, but how it affected society.
