Ag Reserve Land Swap Plan On Hold

On Wednesday, the Palm Beach County Commission postponed action on the land swap that critics correctly say would destroy the Agricultural Reserve Area.

GL Homes, which proposed the swap, asked for a postponement. The company cited a letter from a county official with questions about a reservoir GL has offered to build as part of the deal. That reservoir would be west of West Palm Beach.

Actually, I believe that GL sought the postponement because the swap didnt have enough votes to pass. The company wants to trade land outside the reserve so it can build 1,000 high-end homes north of Stonebridge Country Club near Clint Moore Road and State Road 7.

Rules allow land swaps only within the reserve for rights to build there. Breaking that rule would set a precedent that other developers could exploit until farming was driven from reserve that voters taxed themselves to protect.

With the delay, commissioners wont consider the swap until next May. County Mayor Robert Weinroth, who represents Boca Raton and Delray Beach, and Commissioner Gregg Weiss voted for the delay. Both are on the ballot in November. They were joined by Melissa McKinlay and Maria Marino. Mack Bernard, Dave Kerner and Maria Sachs voted against the delay. Sachs represents the reserve.

World War Ii Army Air Force Base

Mizner Park (Boca Raton)

During World War II, some of the land used by the Japanese farmers of the Yamato Colony was confiscated and used as the site of the Boca Raton Army Air Force Base, a major training facility for B-29 bomber crews and the only facility in the U.S. training radar operators. Much of the Boca Raton Army Airfield was later donated to Palm Beach County and became the grounds of Florida Atlantic University. Many of FAU’s parking lots are former runways of the airbase. When viewed from above, the site’s layout for its previous use as an airfield is plainly evident. Boca Raton Airport‘s runway was once part of the original airbase, and is still active to this day, although the runway has been rebuilt. Army School Building #3 of the Army Air Forces Base has survived as the office building for the Cynthia Gardens apartment complex on Northwest 4th Avenue.

Boca Art Museum Thrives And Ag Reserve Plan Put On Hold

Mizner Park (Boca Raton) : 2021 Ce qu

With all the talk of a performing arts center on the northeast edge of Mizner Park, lets not overlook the existing cultural attraction on the northwest edge.

Indeed, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boca Raton Museum of Art is thriving. In March, the well-reviewed, well-attended exhibition Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru ended. It was a coup for the museum, since many of the nearly 200 pieces were outside Peru for the first time.

A month later came The Art of the Hollywood Backdrop, which runs until January. It is another world premiere, this time for an exhibition of pieces from 1938 to 1968 that remind us of what stunning work the industry did by hand before the advent of computer-generated graphics.

You can stand in front of the Mount Rushmore backdrop from North By Northwest and remember Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint fleeing James Mason in the climactic scene. You can stand in front of the backdrop from The Sound of Music and remember the small boat carrying Julie Andrews and the Von Trapp children tipping over in front of their annoyed father, played by Christopher Plummer. You can see the 50-foot-long backdrop depicting ancient Rome in Ben Hur.

Well-placed lighting allows visitors to appreciate how the works gave audiences the sense of being there. Displays explain how directors used the backdrops to create some of the industrys most memorable scenes. If you like to take selfies, there are many opportunities.

Addison Mizner’s Resort Town

Boca Raton as a city was the creation of architect Addison Mizner. Prior to him, Boca Raton was an unincorporated farming town with a population of 100 in 1920.:7

In 1925, Mizner announced his plan for “the foremost resort city on the North American continent,”:4 “a new exclusive social capital in America.”:9 After spending several years in Palm Beach, where, in his own words, he “did more than any one man to make the city beautiful,”:5 and designed the Everglades Club among many other buildings, in Boca Raton his plan was to create from scratch “a resort as splendid in its entirety as Palm Beach is in spots.”:6

Instead of the existing Palmetto Park Road, the main street in Mizner’s Boca was to be El Camino Real, 20 lanes wide, which Mizner fancifully translated as “The Royal Highway”,:39 referring to Spain’s road network and to the road to Santa Fe and to the Spanish missions in California. It was originally to be circular, with a lagoon in the middle.:44 Soon it became, in the plans, Boca Raton’s main east-west street, to be 220 feet wide and with a canal for pleasure boats in the center. His statement that it was inspired by Botafogo, a neighborhood and beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is another of his many inventions of foreign “facts”.:144 Mizner, who never went to Brazil nor knew Brazilians, simply made it up because the name “Botafogo” sounded impressive, as was the concept of imitating Rio de Janeiro.
