Should You Bring The Kids

While children are welcome inside the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the museum exhibitions may not be appropriate for children under the age of 10. It may also be difficult to properly explain the events of 9/11 and their impact to young children. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum provides a guide for children, and staff is available to help answer questions. It’s recommended that you allow yourself at least three to four hours to fully embrace the memorial and the contents of the museum, as the experience is very emotional. Some find the museum to be overwhelming however, many have attested that its deep impact is part of what makes the museum and memorial so necessary. Finding the right tone when creating a museum around a day so tragic is difficult, but many feel that the museum appropriately creates an informative and touching experience that pays tribute to the victims and the emotions the nation felt on that day, the days following, and even now.

Our Guide To 9/11 Memorial Museum Admission Ticket

The 9/11 Memorial Museum is a moving tribute of remembrance and honour to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the multiple terror attacks on 11 September 2001 as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.

Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global design competition that included more than 5,200 entries from 63 nations. The Memorials twin reflecting pools, each nearly an acre in size and featuring the largest manmade waterfalls in North America, are set within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history.

The memorial exhibition called In Memoriam honours those that lost their lives that day in 2001 as well as the people who were killed during the World Trade Center 1993 bombing. Learn about some of the individual victims and their stories and see portraits of the nearly 3,000 men, women, and children who were killed in the attacks in the memorial exhibition.

What To Expect When Visiting 9/11 Museum And Memorial

The 9/11 Museum and Memorial will leave a strong impression on you. This is a museum most people visit in silence, in awe at a part of history most of us remember, yet we still know little about. You will be overwhelmed with sadness and anger at some point.

The 9/11 Museum is not recommended for children below the age of 10. The exhibit may not be best suited for such a young audience. Furthermore, younger kids may end up getting bored in a place that is so quiet. If you are set on visiting, you may want to find a babysitter to take care of your children while youre at the museum.

    The World Trade Center Cross

Just days after the towers’ collapse, recovery workers discovered a 17 ft tall intersecting beam among the wreckage that unmistakenly resembled a Christian cross.

This cross was installed here on the side of St. Peter’s Church as a temporary holding spot before being transferred to the National September 11th Museum.

This transfer was not without controversy, as a national Atheists Association opposed the use of government funds to accommodate the transfer, but they lost.

The court ruled that the cross did not violate constitutional restrictions on church and state.

The current cross was installed in 2011 and was designed by Jon Krawczyk. Its polish is intended to reflect the sky, crowds, and the emerging World Trade Center.

The new cross is filled with notes, letters, and other symbols of loss.

Visit To 9/11 Museum May Be Cathartic For Some Traumatic For Others

    May 15, 2014 / 7:59 PM / CBSNews.com

NEW YORK – More than 13 years after the attacks of Sept. 11, the completed museum at the World Trade Center site opened its doors. The collection of artifacts, pictures, videos and stories of victims fill the museum – a Pandora’s box of memories that pay tribute to the tragic events that unfolded in lower Manhattan, as well as Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania, on that terrible day.

Inside the 9/11 Memorial Museum, dedicated to all who died in the attacks, museum-goers will find steel from the South Tower, the wrecked remains of a fire truck, the last piece of ruins removed from the site, a pair of bloody high heeled shoes and wallets carried by those who were lost. There are missing-person photos on the walls and recorded voices of victims who made their last phone calls to say goodbye to spouses, children, siblings and friends.

For many people, bearing witness to the traumatic events laid out in the museum will be too much. For others, it may feel cathartic, says Dr. JoAnn Difede, director of the Program for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Studies at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Difede, who has worked extensively with 9/11 victims and first responders, added at least 16 percent of 9/11 victims still experience some form of post-traumatic stress disorder, many of whom don’t realize they are still struggling. A visit to the museum may be hardest for those victims.

Skip The Lines When Accessing The 9/11 Museum

The most convenient and economical way to access the 9/11 Museum is to purchase these tickets online and in advance.

One thing you should know before going to Ground Zero is that the 9/11 Memorial and the 9/11 Museum are different things. The Memorial is a monument located on the foundation of what used to be the Twin Towers, and the 9/11 Museum is a subway facility below Ground Zero that houses an exhibit about the 9/11 attacks and their aftermath.

To visit the 9/11 Museum, you only need to purchase this ticket. When booking your tickets, you will need to select a time slot in which to visit the Museum, which is usually about two and a half hours from opening time.

With the Museum’s APP, in addition to accessing interactive parts of the exhibition that you will not be able to see otherwise, you can listen to a complete audio guide in Spanish so you won’t miss anything. Once you reserve your ticket, you will receive it in your email and you will only need to present it on your cell phone at the entrance and go through the security checkpoint to access the Museum.

Is The 9/11 Memorial Open On 9/11

Every year, the 9/11 Memorial is closed to the public on September 11 until 3 p.m. That time is reserved for the anniversary tribute to the victims, a ceremony only open to family members.

From 3 p.m. until midnight, the memorial is reopened to the public for the Tribute in Light, which all are welcome to attend.

The Tribute in Light is a moving spectacle, shining two giant beams of blue light into the darkness. Each beam reaches up to four miles in the sky and can be seen from a 60-mile radius around Manhattan. This represents the images of the Twin Towers, part of the World Trade Center that collapsed during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

    Arrangement Of The Victims’ Names

9/11 Tribute Museum in Lower Manhattan in need of help to stay open

The names of 2,983 victims are inscribed on 152 bronze parapets on the memorial pools: 2,977 killed in the September 11 attacks and six killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The names are arranged according to an algorithm, creating “meaningful adjacencies” based on relationshipsproximity at the time of the attacks, company or organization affiliations and in response to about 1,200 requests from family members. Software by Local Projects implemented the arrangement. All names are stylized with Optima typeface for a “balanced appearance”

The names of the employees and visitors in the North Tower , the passengers and crew of American Airlines Flight 11 , and the employees and a visitor of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are around the perimeter of the North Pool. The names of the employees and visitors in the South Tower , the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 175 , the employees, visitors, and bystanders in the immediate vicinity of the North and South Towers, the first responders who died during rescue operations, the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 and American Airlines Flight 77 , and the employees at the Pentagon are around the perimeter of the South Pool. Company names are not included, but company employees and visitors are listed together. Passengers on the four flights are listed under their flight numbers, and first responders with their units.
