Smithsonian American Art Museum Receives $21 Million Gift To Acquire Works By Living Craft Artists

  • WASHINGTON, DC

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has received a $2.1 million gift from the Windgate Foundation to establish an endowment dedicated to acquiring artworks by living craft artists. The gift also funds two sequential one-year pre-doctoral fellowship positions that further scholarship in American craft. This major gift to the museum affirms the Renwick Gallery as the nations preeminent center for the enjoyment and study of American craft, and supports the leadership role of its craft program to advocate for a diverse and inclusive view of what is traditionally considered great art.

For the past decade, the Renwick Gallery has presented a series of exhibitions that reassess what craft is in a modern world. This new fund for acquisitions is dedicated to adding to the museums collection artworks made by a broadly representative and diverse group of American artists. This collecting effort will be featured, for the first time, in the museums upcoming exhibition This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World , which celebrates the Renwick Gallerys 50th anniversary by honoring the history of studio craft while also introducing progressive contemporary narratives and artists that highlight the more inclusive and changing landscape of American craft.

Larry West was a mergers and acquisitions specialist when he happened upon an article in The New York Post in 1975 that said antique photographs were on the verge of becoming the next big collectible.Inspired, he walked into a shop in Mamaroneck, N.Y., and came across a daguerreotype an early form of photography, made on highly polished metal plates that is almost startling in its hologram-like effect. It depicted an African American man in a tuxedo, elegantly posed before the camera. West purchased it for $10.70.

Including tax, he said with a laugh in a phone interview.

The find kicked off Wests 45-year-long passion some might say obsession with daguerreotypes, as objects of beauty and as records of American history, including the active role African Americans played as both makers and consumers of photography from its earliest invention.

Now, an important segment of his collection, most of which has never been on public view, has been purchased by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., an event that Stephanie Stebich, the museums director, called a coup. The museum said the purchase pricewas in the mid-six figures.

Worth The Trip Great Gift Shop

The presidential portraits are worth the trip since collection at the White House is not viewable. American realism exhibit til August is superb if you like realism. Civil War and Karsh portraits are a must seer. A truly enjoyable afternoon and not overwhelming.

a great way to spend the afternoon! a lot of different artists, from different time periods, all exhibiting some of the major currents that marked American art, my favorites being the collection on American Realism, featuring some great works by Edward Hopper and Paul Cadmus, among others.

There were very few exhibits in a extreemly large building. The set-up for the objects was ill conceived and the choice of items even worse. I have visited museums all over the world and the Smithsonian is by far the WORST MUSEUM I have ever had the displeasure of visiting. I’ve seen the British Museum, London, the Bodlian Museum, Oxford, ENGLAND, the Tower of London, The National Museum, Belfast, Northern Ireland, The Irish Museum in Trinity Church, Dublin, EIRE, The Archaeological Museums of Odessa, UKRAINE, and Jerusalem, ISRAEL. The John Bunyan Museum, Bedford, ENGLAND, The Museum of Edinburgh Castle, SCOTLAND. The Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, RUSSIA and The Palace Museum of St. Petersburg, RUSSIA. The William Shakespeare Museum, Stratford-Upon-Avon, ENGLAND.The Fort Casper Museum, Casper, Wyoming,.
