Youth Summer Art Program 2020

Due to the public health concerns regarding COVID-19, the Youth Summer Art Program will not be held this summer. The safety of our young artists, their families, and our teachers is our utmost concern.

We are presently looking into accessible at-home art projects this summer to continue our mission of educating the young artists of our community.

Classes will resume as usual next summer.

The Youth Summer Art Program is open to children, grades 5 to 8, ages 10 to 14 years. Each week-long session focuses on a different art form and combines exciting hands-on art creation with museum tours, art history discussions and connecting real works of art with the day’s activity. Professional artists and educators will direct creative and age-appropriate activities using a variety of media in the museum’s historic house, Parker Gallery and in the adjacent Whistler Park. Local visiting artists will come to speak about their works in the week’s featured medium.

Classes will take place Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 12 Noon. Class fee is $175 per student per week.

Scholarships are available for talented students in the community who are interested in art. Please inquire by phone: 978-452-7641.

The Whistler House Museum of Art

A statue of James McNeil Whistler stands in a park outside of the Whistler House Museum of Art.

Displays of artwork by local artists and LAA members are located in the Parker Gallery which is located just behind the main house and museum.

The City of Lowell is filled with many unexpected hidden gems. One such gem is the surprising combination of art and history that can be found at the Whistler House Museum of Art, located at 243 Worthen St. in Lowell.

This charming and historical 1823 home is the birthplace of painter and etcher James McNeil Whistler.

Born in 1834, this American artist moved to Europe where he built a reputation for being a leading proponent of the theory Art for Arts sake, and became one of the most important artists of his time.

His most famous painting is the iconic Whistler’s Mother, which now hangs in the Musee du Luxembourg in France.

The Whistler family only lived in the Worthen Street home for a short time before moving overseas. The home was then occupied by several different owners before it was purchased by the Lowell Art Association in 1908.

The Lowell Art Association is the oldest incorporated art association in the country, and they have used their resources to renovate this historic home into a museum and art gallery.

On display now until Jan. 25, the LAA is hosting a juried members exhibition for the fall/winter season.
