Port Discovery Children’s Museum Shows Off $10M Renovation Ahead Of Grand Opening

Mowat was born May 12, 1921 in Belleville, Ontario and grew up in Richmond Hill, Ontario. His great-great-uncle was Ontario premier Sir Oliver Mowat, and his father, Angus Mowat, was a librarian who fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. His mother was Helen Lilian Thomson, daughter of Henry Andrew Hoffman Thomson and Georgina Phillips Farley Thomson of Trenton, Ontario. Mowat started writing, in his words “mostly verse”, when his family lived in Windsor from 1930 to 1933.

In the 1930s, the Mowat family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where as a teenager, Mowat wrote about birds in a column for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. During this time he also wrote his own nature newsletter, Nature Lore. In the 1930s Mowat studied zoology at the University of Toronto but never completed a degree. He took his first collecting expedition in the summer of 1939 to Saskatoon with fellow zoology student Frank Banfield collecting data regarding mammals and Mowat focusing on birds. They sold their collections to the Royal Ontario Museum to finance their trip.:219 Before enlisting Banfield published his field notes in the Canadian Field-Naturalist. Mowat published his when he returned from World War II.

General Contractor: Lewis ContractorsArchitect: Cambridge Seven Associates

In 2019 we teamed with Lewis Contractors to collaborate on a unique design-build project at the Childrens Museum. This dream project was designed by Cambridge Seven Associates. Gaithersburg Architectural Millwork was tasked with taking the Architects vision of building the hull of a ship and encapsulating the steel structure supporting an engine room and deck that would create an interactive exhibit at the Port Discovery Childrens Museum. This ship is now an integral feature at the nonprofit childrens museum in Baltimores Inner Harbor. The one-of-a-kind project gave our Engineering Team and Artisans numerous unique challenges. Using our Homag-BMG 5 axis CNC we were able to cut the FR laminated plywood rib structure to the exact curve and shape of the ships hull which was then clad with bendable ply. We also fabricated several solid surface Ticket Kiosks for the lobby. The Kiosks required thermoforming bright red Corian which was used to achieve the desired shape.

Looking back this project was a labor of love. Being able to imagine the excitement in a childs eyes when they first see this amazing ship and knowing we were a part of this collaboration reminds us that our people bring out the extraordinary in great places.

In Our Client’s Words

Any number of CPA firms can do your audit, but not every CPA has the right expertise to give good advice along the way. We work with Jim Crisp because of his strong expertise with nonprofit organizations. He has a solid understanding of our organization and nonprofits in general. This makes him a great resource for our museum.

Port Discovery Childrens Museum is an excellent fit for Gross Mendelsohn. Jim and other members of the firm treat us as an important client. They keep their fees competitive, weve been happy with the staff members who have worked onsite, and theyre just nice people to work with.
