Dinosaurs Among Us: American Museum Of Natural History To Unveil Titanosaur
Whats 122-feet long, weighs as much as 10 African elephants and is totally vegetarian? A Titanosaur, of course! Dino-lovers rejoice as the American Museum of Natural History gears up to introduce this gargantuan dinosaur in a brand-new exhibit. The massive new dinosaur cast will be unveiled in January, settling in for a three-year stay on the museums dinosaur floor. We’ve gathered some fun facts about this newly discovered dinosaur group, as well as details on the upcoming exhibit and even a very cool digital rendering of this giant find.
One of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered, the Titanosaur was excavated in the desert near La Flecha in the Patagonia region of Argentina by paleontologists Jose Luis Carballido and Diego Pol, both from the Museum of Paleontology Egidio Feruglio. First unearthed in 2014, this particular group of dinosaurs is so new that it has not been formally named yet. Since its initial discovery, Titanosaur fossils have been discovered on nearly every continent, marking dramatic advancements in paleontology. These gigantic dinosaurs stomped around what are the modern-day forests of Patagonia nearly 100 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period. A BBC TV special set for January will document the discovery, though theres nothing quite like seeing the impressive Titanosaur in person.

Laboratory For Molecular Systematics And Ecology
For most of its history, biological taxonomy and systematics were conducted using comparative morphology. In recent decades, however, advances in molecular biology and computational technologies have opened new possibilities for studying the diversity and history of life through the use of cladistics and computational phylogenetics. These technologies also offer new opportunities for molecular ecology and conservation genetics.
Academy scientists have been early adapters of molecular biology techniques. Allozymes, DNA-DNA hybridization, immunoelectrophoresis, restriction site analyses of mitochondrial DNA and serology were used extensively since the late 1960s. Recent molecular work mainly employs DNA sequencing, microsatellites, and AFLP . In 2004, the Laboratory for Molecular Systematics and Ecology was formed as a shared, multi-user facility to improve access to and provide training for the use of molecular data in systematic and ecological research. In addition to supporting staff, the lab offers research opportunities for students and post-doctoral fellowships.

How Are Dinosaur Fossils Prepared In The Laboratory
Fossil preparators are highly skilled technicians who extract fossils from the surround matrix, use adhesives and consolidants to stabilize the fossils and prepare molds and casts of the specimens.
When fossils arrive from the field, they are encased in plaster jackets, as well as the rock, or matrix, which surrounds the fossils. Fossil preparation involves cutting open the plaster jacket and removing this matrix surrounding the fossil. The matrix may be soft and crumbly, when the sand or mud is poorly cemented together, or it can be extremely hard, when the sediments are well cemented. Accordingly, a wide variety of tools are required to remove the matrix and stabilize the fossil. Commonly, dental tools are used to carefully pick away sediment near the bone, along with custom-made needles composed of carbide steel. Formerly, chisels and hammers were used to remove blocks of matrix farther away from the bone, but recently, smaller mechanical tools have taken their place. These include small grinding wheels, miniature jackhammers called air scribes, and tiny sand-blasters powered by compressed air.

Two new dinosaurs have joined the bronze Deinonychuses outside the Academy of Natural Sciences. They are much larger, much more colorful, and part of a traveling exhibition featuring nearly a dozen animatronic dinosaurs from the time of Pangea the supercontinent of earths distant past.
Dinosaurs Around the World will take us way back in time, Scott Cooper, president of the Academy of Natural Sciences said Friday, previewing the dinos to a group of schoolchildren. Moving, roaring dinosaurs its thrilling to imagine what the massive creatures were like in real life.

How Does Something Become A Fossil
Most ancient animals never became fossils. Their carcasses were likely consumed by other organisms, or worn away by wind or water. But sometimes the conditions were right and their remains were preserved. The most common process of fossilization happens when an animal is buried by sediment, such as sand or silt, shortly after it dies. Its bones are protected from rotting by layers of sediment. As its body decomposes all the fleshy parts wear away and only the hard parts, like bones, teeth, and horns, are left behind. Over millions of years, water in the nearby rocks surrounds these hard parts, and minerals in the water replace them, bit by bit. When the minerals have completely replaced the organic tissue, what’s left is a solid rock copy of the original specimen.

WASHINGTON Positioned in mid-kill, the Tyrannosaurus rex towers over the prone body of its prey, a similarly huge triceratops.
Even in simulation millions of years later, it’s a moment of unmistakable savage violence and an embodiment of the meaning of the word dinosaur: Greek for terrible lizard.
The massive skeleton is the culmination of a decades-long quest by the National Museum of Natural History to acquire a rare and coveted T. rex skeleton. Until now, the museum, part of the Smithsonian network, got by with a replica skeleton, but Kirk Johnson, the museum’s director, says that was never satisfactory.
“It’s been kind of deeply embarrassing to be the national museum and NOT have a T. rex,” he said.
The T. rex tableau is now the centerpiece of the museum’s newest exhibition, the David H. Koch Hall of Fossils Deep Time, which opens to the public on Saturday. For Johnson, it’s almost impossible to overstate the power and appeal of these extinct giants.
