An Exhibition Featuring The Photographs Of Erika Goldring
On March 23, 2022 the New Orleans Jazz Museum celebrated the debut of an exhibit dedicated to the legacy of Big Chief Monk Boudreaux featuring the photographs of Erika Goldring. The exhibit celebrates the legacy of Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and the Black masking Indians through a series of colorful and dynamic portraits. For more than fifty years, Big Chief Joseph Pierre “Monk” Boudreaux has led the Golden Eagles, a Black masking Indian tribe. Last year, he turned eighty, which makes him one of the true elders of the Mardi Gras Indian masking tradition. Erika Molleck Goldrings portraits show the detailed artistry and eye-catching colors of the Mardi Gras Indians suits over the years, serving as an extraordinary archival record.

The New Orleans Jazz Museum first celebrated International Jazz Day in 2018, but it has played a central role in promoting awareness and appreciation of the music that New Orleans made famousjazzfor more than 50 years. Since its opening in 1961, the Jazz Museum has developed into the worlds premier repository of jazz-related artifacts, counting more than 25,000 pieces in its collection. These comprise an impressive array of jazz ephemera including instruments, pictorial sheet music, photographs, records, tapes, manuscripts and other items ranging from Louis Armstrongs first cornet to a 1917 disc of the first jazz recording ever made.
Collectively, these offerings represent far more than just a concert schedule or shelves of historical artifacts. As Museum Director Greg Lambousy puts it, The Jazz Museum enhances New Orleans ongoing cultural renaissance by providing diverse resources for musicians and music lovers of all languages and nationalities. Exit Stage Right: Zack Smiths Festival Portraits
On December 3, 2021, the New Orleans Jazz Museum debuted Exit Stage Right: Zack Smiths Festival Portraits. As both a musician and photographer, Zack Smith believes that the world gets smaller as we celebrate our similarities and connect through our traditions and stories. Smiths mostly large-format film photographs have the ability to bring subject and viewer closer together, and his custom environments foster intimacy. These portraits include the late ChazFest in the Ninth Ward, HIP Fest, Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, the Ponderosa Stomp, and the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience, where he worked with Preservation Hall. The photographs show musicians, music fans, backstage workers, and assorted hangers-on in quiet moments amid the festival chaos. The exhibit will run through the Summer of 2022.

The Wildest Louis Prima Comes Home
On May 1, 2019, the New Orleans Jazz Museum debuted The Wildest! Louis Prima Comes Home, sponsored by the Gia Maione Prima Foundation. As a trumpeter, singer, songwriter, and performer, Louis Primas swinging persona conquered New York, Las Vegas, Hollywood, and points in between. In addition to photos, instruments, and stagewear, visitors can listen to recordings, learn how to swing on a dance floor, and practice Louis Prima karaoke in a recording booth. Rare artifacts highlighted in the exhibition include Louis Prima and Keely Smith’s 1958 Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Vocal Group or Chorus for “That Old Black Magic, several pieces of Primas jewelry, including a lighter with a metal relief of the Sahara Hotel on it, a trumpet necklace and ring, and Prima Coat of Arms belt buckle, along with Gold Records for the Jungle Book and Capitol Records Collectors series, and many more.

New Orleans Jazz Museum Announces Annual Improvisations Gala
NEW ORLEANS The New Orleans Jazz Museum will host the 5th annual Improvisations Gala throughout the historic complex at 400 Esplanade Ave. on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 8 to 11 p.m. preceded by a Patron Party from 7-8 p.m.
Tickets are now available at ImprovisationsGala2022.eventbrite.com, with a special Early Bird discount from August 1-12 of $250 for Patron level and $100 for General Admission. After August 12, prices increase to $300 and $150 per person for patron tickets and $150 per person for general admission.
Known as an evening of variations, this popular fundraiser features an exciting mix of the finest local and national musical talents, New Orleans cuisine and craft cocktails, and a dazzling Sound Collage lighting display, plus fabulous exhibits and jazz-related arts installations. The event envelops an entire city block, celebrating our music and culture at the epicenter of music on the edge of the French Quarter.

Current exhibits include The Wildest!
