Television

How do you be all things to all people? The old Australian Centre for the Moving Image was a nexus of screen industry and audience, at once collecting and preserving screen culture while running talks and films that kept pace with changing media. But how do you re-think a museum designed to get couch potatoes and screenagers into a physical space?

A museums collection is both its biggest challenge and biggest draw for visitors. Only a small amount of any collection can be shown and theres a universe of objects that make up a collection. Displaying the collection online seems like a good way to showcase it but collection management systems are often clunky and designed for back-end research rather than an audience. The new ACMI puts a Lens over their collection linking everything you see in the revamped exhibition spaces to other media, including films outside their collection.

And by letting you capture your creations like the fun single-frame, flip-book animation you can make of yourself the Lens keeps you in the exhibition rather than looking at your phone for the next selfie. And there are some big selfie opportunities in the new space, from the Countdown sign to the Mad Max car if slightly altered.

The application deadline for this internship is February 15, 2021!

The Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History seeks a motivated Yale undergraduate student to participate in a six- to eight-week internship in the summer of 2021, with Dr. Alexi Baker in the Division of History of Science and Technology . HST has a nationally-important collection of historical scientific and medical instruments, other scientific and medical artifacts, and technologies of all kinds from across more than 500 years. These fascinating objects tell the story of science at Yale since its foundation in 1701, but also a multitude of other stories about science and technology and all aspects of daily life.

The HST collection will have a dedicated exhibition gallery for the first time when the Peabody Museum reopens after its major renovation in a few years. We are in the process of doing research, design, and feedback activities to create this gallery as well as other related displays, A/V installations, digital resources, social media, publications, and programming. This also involves collaborating with the other galleries and working groups at the Peabody related to the display of manmade artifacts, to the museums relationship with communities from the local to the international, and to modern social justice.

it sucked! Poor management, racism lack of advancement for minority staff, lousy pay toxic envirorment worst working hours you can imagine, no consideration for the quality of life for employees

I worked here for three years. It was my first job right out of college. I was learning for about two years and then hit a ceiling and realized I had mixed out what I was going to learn here. Often my days were very slow. I would finish a days work before lunch. I’m not the type of person to twiddle my thumbs and need more stimulation and opportunity to grow so I enevitabley decided to leave. Most of the upper management has been there since the late 80’s early 90’s so their willingness to take risks and try new things for a technology museum are extremely limited. I had to go through a lot of red tape to get something approved, usually 3 or 4 people.
