Police found most of them neatly laid out in their bunk beds, covered with purple shrouds and wearing Nike sneakers.

Is The Museum Of Death Worth It

Given the gruesome nature of the exhibits, this is not a museum for everyone. While there is no age limit to visit, it is definitely an attraction geared toward a mature audience, and it’s not recommended for children. With that said, for people who have an interest in the historical aspects of famous serial killers or someone who has a morbid curiosity with death, the Museum of Death is a worthwhile stop if you’re in Hollywood or New Orleans. If you have the option, the original location offers more exhibits and is a bit more spread out. Something tells me its the right time to tell you about my visit to The Museum of Death in Hollywood. If you are squeamish I suggest you do not read this! If Im honest Im not sure exactly what I was expecting, but parts of it really made my skin crawl. There were no pictures allowed so Ill have to borrow someThe gentleman on reception was delightful, I got my ticket and proceeded through the curtains the phone rang and he answered Hello, Museum of Death, how can I help?, which instantly put a smile on my face.

Once through the curtains I was greeted by all sorts of death, the first part focused on serial killers, their crimes and punishments. There was a prison uniform mounted on the wall that had been worn during an execution and not washed. It had stains marked all down the front of it. A young lady asked me What do you think that is?, I said I didnt really want to think about it. She replied I think youre in the wrong place, I said I thought it might be coffee and laughed, knowing full well it was something much more ominous.

You can watch Cannibal! The Musical by Trey Parker & Matt Stone, its about Alferd Packer a cannibal who was put on trial back in 1883 . Theres lots to read about Ed Gein who was a body snatcher and murderer who liked to refashion skin and bones into keepsakes. He inspired the character Leatherface from the film Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But wait a minute, its not all doom and gloom.

Museum Of Death Hollywood Tours And Tickets

The Museum of Death Hollywood is not a misnomer it is dedicated to showcasing the art and artifacts on the subject of death. In fact, it houses one of the worlds largest collections of serial killer art and relics of famous murders around the world. The shocking museum contains everything from funeral items to photos of Charles Manson crime scenes and information regarding cannibals and suicide.

Though meant to provide education on death rather than simply scare, that doesnt stop many visitors from fainting when they tour the exhibits. Serial killer exhibits display handwritten letters and other items from the criminals. With videos of autopsies and serial killers, a head severed by a guillotine, items related to the Black Dahila murders, pet taxidermy, body bags and execution devices, it certainly is not for the faint of heart. The founders of the museum hope that the museum makes people appreciate life.

Wow what an interesting self guided tour. If you are looking for something unusual to do while in Hollywood. When asked the host how he was doing, he said “I am a live”, which is a great way to say welcome to the museum. The museum takes a different spin on death with a focus on serial killers and their methods of madness to a room called “Putting the fun back in funeral”. There are a few Hollywood stories of stars death. There are graphic pictures and stories, and would not recommend this to tour for children. It was fun, different and interesting to see.

It was interesting, to say the least. Has paintings by John Wayne Gacy in there – sort of like a mini alternative art gallery! For a museum, i think it would have been better if it was bigger, and more organised, so that the user doesn’t have to do so much reading. I think if this aspect was adjusted you could easily spend a full hour there. But as it was, I went through it in half an hour. Maybe i’m just too lazy to read so much. I agree with a previous comment here that it should have been 10-12 dollars instead of 15. However due to the location and subject matter i assume they cannot attract enough visitors to secure a lower price.

    What Is There To Do

The Museum of Death is an interesting one. It was created to fill the void of death education in the USA, offering a self-guided tour lasting around 60 minutes, but if you can stomach it, you can stay longer.

We have to say Family Days Out visited the Museum of Death, and take caution! Whilst it’s an all-ages museum , it’s certainly not suitable for non-teens, and even then make sure they have a strong stomach for some of the exhibits!

The exhibits within the Museum of Death begin fairly top level when it comes to it’s content. You can see skeletons of small animals, just as you would in a natural history museum, through to letters and artwork of serial killers , and news clippings from notable moments in history.

Exhibits also show Manson Family memorabilia, pet taxidermy and even mortician and coroners instruments.

The further back you get into the museum, the more graphic the content. Parents should check out the exhibits prior to kids looking at them, so you can make sure you are approving of what they see first.

We don’t recommend any children see the very last section of the museum as it’s VERY graphic!

So you’ve been warned, but every family has their own tastes and educational values, so take caution and if this is up your alley – good luck!

History Of The Museum Of Death

The Museum of Death was first established in June 1995 by J. D. Healy and Catherine Shultz. As the founders state, the purpose of the museum is simply to to make people happy to be alive.

An honorable aim most will agree. And in some measures, you do walk out feeling happy that youve never had an encounter with a serial killer. But then I dont need a museum to fill me with gratitude for that fact.

The original museum and collection were based in San Diego. According to the owners, the building was the citys first mortuary.

It was born from a passion for the macabre it seems. Both Healy and Shultz would write to serial killers and request artwork from them, that they would promise to put on display as part of an annual exhibition.

After accumulating enough materials, they decided to open to the museum in 1995.

The shift to LA happened in the late 90s. The pair gained a lot of media attention in their attempts to acquire a vast collection of materials from the Heavens Gate cult suicides.

They were aiming to buy enough of the original artifacts to recreate the scene of the suicides as a permanent exhibition. The distasteful nature of their aims led to them being evicted from the San Diago building.

Since 2000 the museum has been located on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.

    • Address: 6031 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028, United States

The range of gruesome, macabre, and in many cases all out shocking artifacts and images on display at the Museum of Death are too many to number.

If youd like to take a look at the guillotined, severed head of Henri Landru you can, it is there at the museum.

There is also body bag and coffin collection, as well as replicas of execution devices.

Some of the most graphic images include those taken at the infamous Sharon Tate murder scene, .

A photograph of her naked and visibly pregnant body covered in blood is difficult to look at and feels extremely sensationalist.

After this, you can walk into a room filled with animal taxidermy, before venturing into an area that contains a working Thanatron, one of the original suicide machines built by Jack Kevorkian.

Mortician and autopsy instruments are on display, as well as the aforementioned collection of serial killer artwork. An added bonus is the reams of correspondence from murderers behind bars it seemed the founders were pen pals with a large number of them.

Dotted around the museum are images and newspaper clippings detailing the murders of notorious killers such as John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and Peter Sutcliffe

In the end, the Heavens Gate mass suicide has been depicted the exhibition includes the original beds.
