Documenting The American Jewish Experience

Opening its doors in November 2010, and situated on Philadelphia’s Independence Mall, the National Museum of American Jewish History is the only museum in the nation dedicated exclusively to collecting, preserving, and interpreting artifacts pertaining to the American Jewish experience. The Museum’s collection, numbering only two score objects in its first year, in 1976, when it shared space with Congregation Mikveh Israel several blocks from its current location, has grown to more than 10,000 items acquired through donation and purchase. Items in the collection include historic documents, ritual objects, artwork, clothing, and personal memorabilia.

The Museum documents the American Jewish experience. Exhibitions created by the Museum or loaned from other museums illuminate the American-Jewish experience so that visitors can assess their own experience anew. Visitors not only come from throughout the United States, but from around the world as well. Public programs to address issues raised by Museum exhibitions are held throughout the year.

The mission of the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art is to promote contemporary art that reflects Jewish themes.

Chair: Janeane Sloane

The permanent collection includes important contemporary artists such as Chaim Gross, Tobi Kahn, Boaz Vaadia, Siona Benjamin, and many additional renowned local and international artists. The permanent collection exists because of the generous philanthropy of our RS members who have contributed to the purchase of the pieces in our collection. The development of a permanent collection was initiated by Joan C. Sall, Director Emeritus, who, early in the museums history, along with her husband Hyman, purchased many works for the collection.

This philanthropy continues with the recent sponsorship of a Diane Burko piece from her exhibit Repairing the Earth : Diane Burko, Artist & Environmental Activist by Andrea R. Kramer & Lee A. Rosengard and Ellen & Mickey Simon.

The PMJA is a vital and engaging part of the RS Community. We are grateful for the past 40 years of leadership of Joan C. Sall, Director Emeritus Wendi Furman, Curator Emeritus along with Gail Rosenberg, Past Chair and Current Chair Janeane Sloane. We invite any RS member interested in the PMJA Committee to contact Janeane Sloane.

Please note that we do not offer tours during business hours, unless scheduled with a docent or RS staff member. Please contact for information.

Get A Compelling Long Read And Must

Philadelphias gallery and museum gift shops are bursting with unique gifts for all the unique people in your life. Photograph Courtesy of the Fabric and Workshop Museum

Its crunch time for holiday shoppers. For those struggling to decide what to buy, the gift shops of Philadelphias art museums, galleries and related sites offer the chance to shop local and find something special. Some of the most popular shops have intriguing, but often lesser-known, counterparts. The Mütter Museum store, for example, is a wealth of weirdness, but did you know that Laurel Hill Cemetery has its own line of macabre gifts, including stocking stuffers?

Because museum and gallery store sales benefit the venue, shopping at them also provides a way to give back to the community. Our gift shop is a very valuable source of income for Philadelphias Magic Gardens, says visitor relations manager Stephanie Cabezas. People are being more thoughtful about the way they spend their money.

Woodmere Art Museum store director Stephen Kerzner notes that many shops have items that are made just for the venue, yet also provide a range of items to appeal to a broad customer base. My philosophy is simple: Have something for everyone at every price point, he says.

Hall Of Fame And Gallery

Established in 2010, the National Museum of American Jewish History Hall of Fame and a related permanent exhibition gallery honors the lives of prominent Jewish Americans. The initial class of eighteen inductees was chosen both by a public vote and a panel of historians and experts. Inductees were elected in one of eight categories. In its opening year, the exhibit contained a film about the inductees lives and artifacts, including Sandy Koufaxs baseball mitt and sheet music from Irving Berlin. The exhibition was renamed the Ed Snider ‘Only in America’ Gallery and Hall of Fame in honor of the former chairman of Comcast Spectacor.

Yo Its Back Phillys Jewish Museum Reopens After 26 Months Closed

The OY/YO sculpture by Deborah Kass in front of the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History announces it reopening after 26 months closed.

The bright yellow letters are a beacon, rising eight feet high on the sidewalk at 5th and Market streets, announcing the return of the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History.

The letters scream YO to passersby.

Seen from the other side, they scream OY. Sculptor Deborah Kass creation offers slang salutations in both Yiddish and Philly-ese.

The Weitzman is one of the last major cultural institutions in Philadelphia to reopen since the pandemic forced shutdowns in March 2020. In addition to COVID, the museum also had to cope with Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization proceedings, which began just two weeks before the shutdown, to get out from under an overwhelming $30 million building construction debt.

Adding insult to injury, because the museum was engaged in bankruptcy proceedings during the pandemic it was not eligible for assistance from the federal paycheck protection program , which had helped other businesses stay solvent.

The Weitzman was able to recover due to a huge boost from its board members, one of whom Mitchell Morgan bought its building to give the museum a large influx of cash. He then sold it to another donor Stuart Weitzman who donated it back to the museum.
